Those are the ones with several bank accounts outstretched across several nations. They will not end up homeless. They save for tomorrow, even at the cost of today. They would put their company in the red if they thought it would mean that they, as individuals, will have a wealthy future.

oh, they're around. Each time I swear to myself I'll never do it again, somebody else comes around that I'm convinced I can help... Turns out that the great majority of my "social cases" do not know how to think beyond today.
As far as the business, that would be the worst run business in history!

Supposedly, it's the "life skills" they lack and what gets them in trouble. At the shelters in my city, they have life skills training with the hope it will get them off the streets and able to cope with the demands of life.

USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

Not really it all comes down to the figures doesnt it? A few yanks in Poland as apposed to thousands of Poles in the US. Really! no pots no kettles on this one thank you.

You have to keep in mind, the Poles are not the ones causing the problems. Are counties in California going bankrupt because of the Poles? Schools in my state were in the red...was it because of the Poles? The budget busters aren't Poles or any European. It's these millions of Latinos who are coming up from Mexico and pouring over the border like it's not there. Let's not distract from the ones who require the most funding.

OK, now, would you let the homeless freeze to death because they don't fit your protocol of a human being?

It's not about "letting" them freeze to death. They have to take some responsibility for themselves and go inside when it gets cold. Give up whatever lifestyle they are living and head indoors.

News / The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign theft from Oswiecim, Poland [240]

Who knows. Maybe they just want to avoid the impression that there actually ARE neo-nazis and anti-semites roaming freely in Poland...

It sounds more like they wanted to send it somewhere and get some money for it. More money than a scrap yard would give. Filios is spot on. It was more about getting money, less about politics.

I am sure they had some sneaky way they would get paid after they sent it.

At first he seemed reluctant and perhaps even scared to talk to me, and he said he thought I would beat him up for a moment. (Which just shows you how these people get treated more often than not!)

I had a homeless guy steal my twenty bucks to go buy drugs before. It was money I was going to spend on a hotel room and he took it to buy drugs. As a matter of fact, he lied to me and told me he knew where a reasonably priced hotel room was, but really he didn't. He just told me that to gain my trust so he could get some money to go buy meth or something. So, you see, you do have to be careful. You shouldn't let your guard down. Not everyone can or should be trusted. Sure, there's plenty of hard luck out there, but where was your family, couldn't they help out until you found work? You have to keep applying until you get somewhere and stay with family, as terrible as it sounds, until you can find work.

Not only that... But New York City? You have to be kidding me! That's one of the most dangerous cities in the world. If you don't get killed or robbed, you will end up asking yourself... What's here to visit? Perhaps the Statue of Liberty. Ironically, the symbol of hope for immigrants.

I've been to NYC, it isn't as dangerous as you think. As a matter of fact, it's one of the friendlier places I've been to.

If I had to panhandle, I would write a sign: "WE NEED BLANKETS". I bet I'd get a lot of them! Not only I could supply the needy, I bet I'd have enough leftovers to start a little side business!

People make the "will work for food" signs because where I live, asking for money is illegal.

I'm the fool that constantly opens her house to people, and I found out that if someone is homeless, there is usually a reason for it, underneath the obvious one.

Yes, you should be very careful. However, you can still help them :)
You can give them things like soup and clothing. If you know them and trust them, you can give them a ride now and then.

The litmus test is - would you let them move into your home?

I wouldn't. But, if they asked me for a ride to the local DHS office or shelter, and I thought they weren't complete low lifes who would take my car, I would gladly help them in that way. If they came to my door and asked for a warm coat or blanket, and, if I had extra ones, I would let them have those. If they were hungry I would give them a cup of soup or warm noodles. There's plenty of things you can do besides giving them money and your house.

These days, you might even need an e-mail address in some cases!

Email address is the easiest to get. Go to the library, get on the internet, go to gmail and anyone can aquire one for free.

You'll need a social number, an I.D. card and a telephone number aswell.

All those can be aquired. Maybe not the phone number. but the social security number and the ID can. You might have to figure something out for the phone number. Maybe ask around and someone can do you a favor and take the call?

Yes, but all that has nothing to do with what it's like for the chronically homeless. It doesn't matter. The only thing they can do is clean up their act and spend money on rents and food. They don't have the luxury of spending their money on expensive booze and drugs or they will always be on the street without a roof over their heads.

those who have such problems are either homelesses or in palaces, in luxury villas, etc.

Well, most people without money are going to have to do what's necessary to get money. If you are wealthy, you aren't going to be homeless because you already have money. If you are not wealthy, your substance abuse or mental illness can interfer with the amount of money you have access to. If you have a substance addiction, what little money you find will be spent on that and not on rents, food, utilities, all the boring crap we have to spend money on to not be homeless.

They won't take you for a job when you have no address.

In NYC, the post office will give homeless people a PO box address to get their mail. In that city, no homeless person has to go without an address. You can put the address of a relative, or the address of a shelter. There are ways around that. You got to be resourceful. If you sit there and shrug your shoulders and say, "I am going to be forever homeless because I don't have an address" you aren't going to get anywhere.

It's also a fact that many homeless have substance abuse problems, mental illnesses and rap sheets. These are the real barriers, not lack of programs.

What about people who will spend all extra money they find on drugs and alcohol so they won't have enough to pay rents. These people think, if I have a place to stay, I won't have enough for whatever I am addicted to so, they prefer to be on the streets. It's a trade off to them.

However, I will keep stressing that the chronically homeless, as you would call them, really are the minority amongst all the people who are basically condemned to sleeping outside.

Because, that's not been my experience. My experience has been, people who really don't want to be homeless find a way into housing of some kind, while people who are sorta antisocial or don't want help are the ones who end up on the street and stay there. You want people to feel guilty like it's everyone's fault, but the truth is, the chronically homeless have to be the ones who say they are tired of living that way, they will make the changes necessary to find housing, even if it means changing their lifestyle.

Yes, and thousands of other homeless people who are also exposed to the elements, who simply do not choose to live that way.

In NYC, those go to the shelters and stay there. There's a huge difference between the chronically homeless who are experiencing varying problems and people who are poor and have no money for an apartment. The ones who have no money and that's it usually find their way out, while those with other problems are the ones who are in danger of becoming chronic street people. They usually have either mental illness or substance abuse problems. Sometimes, they have terrible rap sheets which keep them from finding employment.

I keep refering to NYC, but it could be one of several major cities that fit this pattern. That one just has the most homeless because it has the most people.

If you ever want to find out for sure, visit NYC. It will give you a new perspective. Some people will not go to a shelter simply because one shelter rule is they must take a shower before they stay. They won't go just because of that.

Which are only a few out of thousands of people who aren't. I hope you'll always remember that.

If you are in a city like NYC, that's hundreds of people. All of them are exposed to the elements, so it's not safe for them, but, they choose to live that way.

In NYC, you got homeless who would rather just stay in the subway, and I am sure it's not the only city that's like that.

we told him to spend it here and help the nhs,etc instead he gave it away to poland.czech republic, slovakia to repair their roads, improve the health care system and help the poorest of the poor i.e homeless people get their lives sorted out!...hmmmm!!..

Sounds like, from your story, you would want him to give it to Eastern Europe to help the homeless out.

I'd ask him why, and I know I would try to take him seriously.

What if he's really irritated at you and walking away telling everyone within hearing distance shelters are bad places and talking about different bad experiences he had at various ones to anyone who happens to be standing on the sidelines.

You might try something like "this one is different, give it a try", hoping he'll hear it as he quickly walks away, but he will be too cynical and untrusting to believe you. That's reality of the chronically homeless.

News / Freezing weather in Poland, 42 people dead in winter freeze... and no-one cares? [140]

I've seen succesful moviestars who used to be homeless. I've seen a girl write a best-seller who used to be homeless. You have no idea how many people actually end up homeless each year, and most of these people are perfectly sane. Stress and problems can turn someone into a proper mess, and if there's no one around to help at that time, it's too easy to lose everything.

These are the ones who will go to the shelters, get on a waiting list for housing, let the counselors help them find employment. Then, you have the chronic homeless who actually want to be living on the streets, apart from the shelters, in their own makeshift shelters or tent villages. You cannot convince them to go to shelters.

It's like that in NYC. People would rather live in the subway than in a shelter. How you going to talk someone like that in out of the cold? When I was in NYC, I saw a guy try to give a homeless man a piece of paper with the name of a shelter on it and the homeless man practically went ballistic about how no one could make him go to it and that shelters were horrid places. What would you do when confronted by that reaction?

I share your sentiments. Some people actually have billions on their private bank accounts, and they keep everything to themselves, while people who had some bad luck (And those people could've been you and me aswell!) die outside because they're an inconvenience to society?

Sometimes I wonder if everyone has been around homeless people in big cities. Did you know some homeless absolutely REFUSE to go to shelters? You cannot make someone go to a shelter who absolutely won't go.

Volunteers from shelters will go out and tell everyone about the shelter and hand out brouchures so people will know it's there and some people would rather just stay on the streets. I've seen it. Some people live in homeless camps with tents and everything and would rather be there than in a shelter.

USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

And this is why America is loathe to give visa-free access - if people are guaranteed to vanish, what's the point in giving them the access?

The point is, there's so many latinos here, what does it matter if Poland gets access? It will mainly be Latinos who move here, just like it is now.
