Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

so where were you born, UK?

Yes , i was born in Scarborough Yorkshire...moved to Poland after falling in love with the place during aid trips to Belarus....

My farm in Poland is not a working farm with cows , pigs and stuff , its just my home...i don,t know the first thing about farming...!

The plan is...to use it as a base for expeditions for groups of 4 x 4 drivers , Harley owners , and other asorted nuts....but i need some money first...!

Yeah i am quite a lot north of you , actually between Drawsko pomorskie and Polczyn zdroj , and yes Hel is not too far away from me , i have not been there as yet , but i want to go , so i can say i have been to Hel and back..!

The nearest place i have been over that way is Kolobrzeg which is also on the Baltic coast , a very nice seaside town , but very touristy....

Yes , learning Polish is not so easy , but i guess having a Polish lady in the house makes it a lot easier....I have been here five years , and still only speak basic drivel...

Now of course i need to learn Russian too...eeek..! Well i don,t need to , Ksusha speaks good English , but i want to...

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

I don,t have any safety worries really , but i do take a few precautions.... If you are travelling in some countries where you can appear to be a rich and vunerable westerner all alone , there are some people who can see you as an easy target...

The first thing is to travel in a vehicle that does not look really expensive , and when camping for the night don,t pick a layby next to the main road where every passing scoundrel can see you are all alone...One of the reasons i drive a 4 x 4 is so i can drive deep into the forest to camp , miles from the nearest town..The logic being , if there ain,t nobody there , nobody can do you any harm... People feel safer in a busy truckstop , but its not the safest place really , its the very place the dodgy people hang around...

One of the best lessons i learnt was...don,t look like a tourist..!

I dont drive to Poland every summer , i can,t afford to visit the UK that often , most of my time is spent on my farm in Zachodniopomorskie... My last road trip was to Kiev in Ukraine to spend nine blissfull days with my Russian girlfriend who is from Moscow...We can both travel to Ukraine without any visa , so its a good place to meet up untill we can sort out getting married and living in the same house in the same country.... She is currently trying to sell her flat in Moscow to get a smaller one that we can use when we visit there...

I am not familiar with Ustron , but you are not so far away from Zakopane and lots of other nice places...I recommend you get somebody in the UK to send you a copy of.. ROUGH GUIDE TO POLAND...its a great book with information on all areas of Poland , sadly , my copy got lent to some German visitors , and i ain,t got it back yet...

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

It was a pretty easy trip really , but i am quite used to long distance travel anyways...In 2007 i drove an old diesal Landrover from Leeds to Belarus , then on to Moscow , then back to the UK via Latvia and Lithuania...I did Moscow to the UK almost non stop drove on redbull most of the way..an epic trip...

The ride on the Harley was uneventfull , apart from spraying petrol all over the rear wheel after the small plastic fuel can i was carrying slipped over the side of the seat and rubbed through on the rear tyre..! I was carrying this can due to the small silly fuel tank on a Harley sportster , only holds enough fuel for 120 miles , and when you go on reserve you have about 20 miles worth of fuel , so i was a bit worried about not finding a fuel station open when i reached Poland in the early hours... As it was there was no problem to find fuel...

From the UK to my home in Poland its about 700 miles of riding , and the Harley does about 60 miles to the gallon , so you can work out roughly how much it cost me , i can,t remember , and my brain does not do maths...! The only stops i made were for fuel , a cup of coffee now and then and a ciggie... The Harley is quite a nice machine for traveling long distances , but the suspension on a sportster is not that clever , so its not so good on rough roads , but most of the roads on the way to my place are not so bad...

Last year i rode the Harley to Tarnopil in Ukraine , won,t do that again , the roads are terrible , wrecked the suspension and shook off the tailite , not to mention losing a helmet and some baggage off the back... Next time i went to Ukraine i drove to Kiev , but went in a Jeep this time...

Looks like my plans may have to change then

You will be fine in Poland with the Lotus , although it might be wise to remove any skirting thats a bit close to the ground , but for Ukraine you would be better off taking a car you are not too worried about wrecking , and one that can take a bit of stick...

I drove on the main road from Dorohusk in Poland to Kiev , this is the main road , and is supposedly a motorway , but there are many sections where the surface is a potholed cart track , not at all pleasant to drive on , even in a Jeep...

It looks as though they have taken the top surface off to replace it , but when i drove on it there was no sign of anyone working on it , or any machinery , so god knows how long its going to remain in that state...?

The time before when i went to Ukraine i only went as far as Tarnopil , but i went on a Harley , not something i would want to do again...wrecked the suspension both front and rear , and shook the tailite off.... some of the lesser roads are just potholed mud tracks , and there are some huge holes in the towns...

Get yourself a cheap Jeep , or a Landrover discovery if you want to see Ukraine...

On the plus side its a nice country , with nice people , and nice food and drink , but expect delays at the border , and Ukrainian police that like to make a few euros out of you....

You would be better off taking a robust 4 x 4 if you are going to Ukraine....I just came back from Kiev , and the road is still far from perfect despite them doing some work on it for the upcoming football....There are long sections where the top surface has been removed , and its not much fun driving on the stuff at more than 30 mph...

I went in a Jeep cherokee , and that just about stood up to the roads , your Lotus will shake itself to bits on some sections of the road to Kiev , and unless you are used to stock car racing , the manner of driving in Kiev will scare you half to death....

Cheonobyl is about 80 miles north of Kiev , and you can get there by driving around the blocked off roads through the forest , but not in a Lotus i am afraid....

Buy yourself a second hand petrol Jeep grand cherokee running on gas for about 700 quid , and you can go anywhere you like in a vehicle that is built to take a bit of rough....

I have been to Chernobyl a few times....unforgettable place....

News / Poland to penalise commie symbols [27]

So what happens with all these re enactment groups , and people with old second war vehicles they display...? Do they now have to remove the swastika badges from the uniforms and vehicles..?

I used to collect second war stuff , and i would like also to collect Soviet era stuff , will it be legal , as long as i don,t show any of it in public...?

What is the definition of public..? if the stuff is at my house and a visitor sees it , will the cops come round to arrest me...

Another dam stupid example of Polish hysteria...Why don,t they ban the Jewish symbol , there seems to be more hatred for Jews than for Germans or Russians...?

News / Majority of Poland's kids physically unfit, claims PPA. [41]

Can you say something more about your expedition to Belarus?

We took help to a charity that helps families affected by the Chernobyl accident...We also were shown around an orphanage that housed children abandoned by mostly alchoholic parents and those that were born deformed due to the radiation from Chernobyl....

There are quite a few horror photos on the net since this accident , but i never saw any as horrible as the ones i met face to face in Belarus...

As we were leaving the area i took a picture of a horse i found dead in a field , it had five legs and a face i can only describe as that of a monster...it was about two years old , and had died from some horrible disease causing its skin to bleed...

I don,t even want to talk about the children i saw there....

Travel / New Indoor Go-Karting Track coming to Wrocław [9]

I used to have my own business in the UK teaching people to be racing drivers and we had a couple of karts we used to take to teeside raceway....These were not the fourstroke things that do 40 mph flat out , these were two stroke machines that would do 120 mph....super fun , and pretty safe... Of course 120 mph on a machine so close to the ground feels like 300 mph...Never had anyone that did not leave with a huge grin on their face....

Almost all formula one drivers began their careers in karts , they have the same power to weight ratio as a formula one car and are an ideal way to start..

Its also very usefull for road drivers , as you very soon learn about skid control and opposite locking a car through a corner...

Sadly the lack of karting centres in Poland is a major reason that not so many good race drivers come from Poland...I am sure the talent is there , but there is nowhere to practice it...

I saw a lot of things much worse than dwarfs in the area affected by Chernobyl....I usually take photos of the places i go to , but the stuff i saw in the kids homes in Belarus was not something i wanted to remember....

Its really popular in the UK....why not in Poland...? either they are doing something wrong , or perhaps Poles prefer to get their racing practice on the public highway....?

Life / Anyone else suffering from mosquito bites in Poland? [52]

Any spray with jeet in it is effective in keeping them at bay....

Incidentally do you know why women get bitten more than the guys do...? Its because the nice smelling soap and perfumes attract the mozzies for miles.... I am not suggesting you don,t wash , but if you are going to be spending some time in a mozzie area try to avoid strong smelling soaps and perfumes....
