Language / "Cup of coffee" translated in Poland as Kubek kawy. Why not a mug? [70]

maybe 'filizanka' sounds like 'teacup' or 'cup and saucer' like our grannies insisted on drinking from?
My granny would have died of thirst before drinking from a mug. lol. Now it would seem pretentious to serve tea the old way.
Languages do move on......

UK, Ireland / How to find a job in the UK coming from Poland? [8]

well look online obviously, google companies, send your CV with a good covering letter.
make sure your CV and letter has been proofread before you send it.
Sorry but if you need to ask people how to look for a job then I do not think working in a different country would be for you.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

my problem with people making sweeping statements about 'the Muslims' is that the vast majority of peaceful normal people are being lumped in with extremists and terrorists. A bit like 'the Irish' in the UK back in the 70s and 80s.

UK, Ireland / How to find a job in the UK coming from Poland? [8]

I think if you are looking for a job in the UK you should come over with a pile of CVs and be prepared financially to spend some time looking.

No company will be interested if you cannot come for an interview at short notice.

Genealogy / Birth Place Assistance - Nowakowski [14]

no it is just something I read in a couple of places, cannot remember where now.
I have met a couple of Nowak/Nowakowskis so I guess it is not that unusual.
My ex bro in law had that name and a v Jewish look I thought.

Genealogy / Birth Place Assistance - Nowakowski [14]

in fact the name Nowak or Nowakowski was very often giving to those who converted to Christianity from Judaism.

Study / What are the steps for a stay permit (due to studies in Poland)? [14]

I don't know Pigsy....ok forget studies but at least someone from India or Pakistan or Bangladesh - making assumptions here about the OP - could get a better class of crappy job in the UK, surely, than what you mentioned, and have more opportunities to move on as well?

Life / Poland - Paypal. Must bank account be Zloty denominated to withdraw funds? What about EUR? [3]

I thought PayPal was international?
I use it a lot and sometimes receive money in zlotys. It then offers me the option of changing that to pounds, or starting a new balance in the new currency.

Well I can withdraw funds to a named bank account - do not see why you should not either.
Possibly if I started a new balance of zlotties, I would not be able to withdraw to my bank as it is an account that only uses sterling? that could well be the case.

Love / Maintenance for child born between Irish/Polish parents. [60]

I want to know if the court will give him parental responsibilities after such a long time???

are you still in the UK?
If so I doubt it, he walked away and was not there to put his name on the birth cert and so could only obtain PR through a court order. AFAIK.

However you should get yourself a solicitor.
For advice perhaps try a parenting website such as mumsnet or netmums.

Life / Advice on Moving to Zakopane [37]

yes helena but if you spend a bit of time on this forum you will see that dominic is unfailingly negative about anyones plans.
and he would obviously not be there to 'pick up the pieces' why would he.
how silly.
Although i agree it is good to point out downsides, he takes it too far.

Life / Advice on Moving to Zakopane [37]

I think there are 'ski resort' aspects to Zakopane, perhaps weeg meant that there is more to it than just that?
Whatever your plans, you really should learn some Polish - it is not like some other European countries where you can get away with not knowing the language. If you know some German that might help too.

UK, Ireland / Polish people in Wales - some questions about living in the UK [19]

we enjoy much more living in Wales than in London.

well it is a different world really isnt it?
My son is half Polish and we live in Wales, and some Welsh kid started telling him that he 'would have to work in Dunbia for the rest of his life'.

Dunbia is a local meat processing plant which is basically staffed by Polish guys.
Local to us is a graveyard where many Polish people from WW2 days are buried.

Life / Brits on benefits in Poland? [38]

you have no idea about anything, I bet you have never been to Europe but live in Pitsville or East Fumbuck convinced you are Polish.

Such as the people I know from this forum and elsewhere who have gone there to work or to set up businesses, silly.

Just jealous I suppose.

Life / Brits on benefits in Poland? [38]

Like I mentioned, they are very likely living on benefits from back home courtesy of the nanny state.

that is possibly the most stupid thing I have ever read on these forums in about five years.
