Feedback / Alterations of thread titles - automatic or moderated? [10]

Why a user who is not interested in the topic would be required to click on the topic just to find out it's not interesting to him or her?

Oh, I see. Users clicking on topics are more important than users creating topics. I will remember it. :):):)

LEARN how to create USEFUL thread titles before starting a new topic, please: ...

Thanks, I didn`t see it before.

So, what have we got here:

For the benefits of all Polish Forums members and visitors we ask you to take your time to create good and relevant titles of your threads. Thread titles are one of the most important elements of quality forum discussions.A good thread title should be unique and precisely reflect the content of the message. the reader should be able to determine what the topic is about by reading a thread title only.

OK, those are the rules.

But I wonder why are they used so selectively? Sticking to certain rules (resulting with changing titles of my threads, even in off topic section) looks odd in comparison to ignoring other rules in the PF.

To sum up, it all sounds very disappointing to me as I am not allowed to start and develop threads as I wish.

I have neglected my own site for a while, I think it is time to get back now.

See you, guys, I am taking a break without asking for suspension. Have fun and take care of my threads. :):):)

Feedback / Alterations of thread titles - automatic or moderated? [10]

And it was already in off topic, so why?

Exactly. I suppose it is not automatic, but one of the mods is extremely bored and is playing with titles.

Can I say it is utterly stupid without offending anyone???

Feedback / Alterations of thread titles - automatic or moderated? [10]

I have noticed that a dozen of my threads have had their titles changed.

One of them - its original title was "It hurts"
polishforums.com/off-topic-lounge-47/beyonc-lip-synched-star-spangled-banner-inauguration-64259/2

And a few others were modified too.

What the f...k? If doesn`t make any sense if we look at the whole content of the mentioned thread. Beyonce lip singing scandal is just a starter, the remaining posts are about sth else. Are mods going to delete the posts which don`t pertain to Beyonce as off-topic, then?????

Travel / Zakopane in December (is it hotel-friendly?) [19]

Don`t be silly. It is easy to say in Britain where winter lasts for 3 or 4 days. In Poland it lasts for 3 or 4 months, let me remind you. :):):) I can remove snow/ice from my elderly neighbour`s pavement once or twice throughout whole winter but not twice a week for 3 months.

Pawian is correct in saying they do not seem to clear the footpaths although this is illegal and all property owners have the legal responsibility to clean the footpath in front of their homes/business.

Yes, private property owners take care of the pavement in fear of heavy fines.
The problem is with parts of streets owned by the town.

Look for a place to stay close to ul Krupówki which is the main street.

Even side streets leading to Krupówki were icy.

USA, Canada / Do Pol/Ams celebrate Black Friday and other American festivals? [18]

Do Pol/Ams celebrate Black Friday and other American festivals?

Annual Mooning of Amtrak, California
Because just like at nude beaches, people who show up for a mooning festival are usually the last people you'd want to see naked. The event was started in the late 70s at the Mugs Away Saloon, a popular dive bar in the affluent city of Laguna Niguel about an hour south of Los Angeles. It was there that a drunken patron offered anyone a free drink if they mooned the passing Amtrak train, and pretty much every second Saturday in July since, folks have gathered at Mugs Away primed to drop their trousers.

are the roads or pathways suitable for prams in winter...many thanks.

Not really, I am afraid. The ice layer on pavements is so thick they let it stay till spring.

Food / Any czernina fans on PF? [23]

Are there any czernina fans on PF?

I am one but unfulfilled.

If so, where do you get your duck (or goose -- also good!)blood?

Probably from a farmer.

History / If Poles were antisemitic, would they ...? [240]

Yes, he always attended Jewish holidays and ceremonies, there are plenty of photos available. Lech was a much better man than his younger brother, Jarosław. Maybe naive and too easily influenced, but much more decent.

Kajtus Czarodziej is really depressing

Plot
The book depicts a schoolboy who gains magic powers. At first, Kajtuś acts as a selfish child, using his power for mischief. Eventually, he becomes dissatisfied with himself, and leaves his home town, where he acquires a reputation as a troublemaker.[2] On his travels, he meets Zosia, a girl who uses her magical power for good.[2] Together, they fight an evil wizard, and Kaytek chooses the path of a good mage.[2] The book contains some gaps, including one of the chapters, which were sections that were crossed out because they were too frightening to children.

Reminds me of Harry Potter.

Shortly speaking, ultra nationalist parties in Poland which openly declare their antiJewish animosity get less than 1% votes in various elections.

While other parties and their leaders, including Presidents of Poland, keep up good Jewish Polish relations:

You would need strong NKVD units to enforce those regulations.... :):):)

Start training them now, time passes quickly.... I hope you possess a desert island where you can produce them en masse. Otherwise, forget the great plan.

Life / One of more conspicuous Polish traits - inconsequence? [37]

I think we'll see a huge argument over it at some point (especially if a minority party like Ruch Palikota holds the balance of power) -

No, it seems RP are losers (they lose in all polls :):) and don`t know how to change it).

But I've always thought that opposition to the cross in the Sejm is directly linked to the power of the Church - if the RCC weakens, then the cross represents far less of a problem.

Who knows??

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

Eating out isn`t as popular in Poland as in UK or US. Poles prefer traditional home cooking. Especially that most Polish wives/mothers/lovers are good or even excellent cooks, unlike in other countries.

Of course, financial differences also play matter - eating at home is much cheaper.

Bankructwo małego Dżeka {Little Jack bancruptcy},

This was by Korczak too? Shyt, I also read it as a child and remember it as a sad story. No wonder I haven`t read anything else by him. His works could be educational but not too funny.

PS. That wasn`t an antisemitic statement.

History / If Poles were antisemitic, would they ...? [240]

As for me, as a child I read King Maciuś I. Only once because I thought it was a very sad story.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Matt_the_First

King Matt the First (Polish: Król Maciuś Pierwszy) is a children's novel by Polish author, physician, and child pedagogue Janusz Korczak. In addition to telling the story of a young king's adventures, it describes many social reforms, particularly targeting children, some of which Korczak enacted in his own orphanage, and is a thinly veiled allegory of contemporary and historical events in Poland. The book has been described as being as popular in Poland as Peter Pan was in the English-speaking world.[1][2] It was the first of Korczak's novels to be translated into English - several of his pedagogical works have been translated, and more recently his novel Kaytek the Wizard was also published in English.

Today I sometimes watch the cartoon with my kids:

Life / One of more conspicuous Polish traits - inconsequence? [37]

I dunno, for something so significant, it should have been done the right way, not the way that involves taking a ladder in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep.

:):):)
Yes, but if it had been done the right way, we wouldn`t be discussing it now, right???? :):)

Not least because - at least to my understanding - these things are normally placed by a priest. The fact that it was placed there by a pair of political opportunists gives it nothing but a reputation as something used to score cheap political points.

Who knows?......

What if someone takes it down? Will we see a ridiculously petty cross war carried out in the Sejm?

d

What if someone takes it down?

I estimate the cross will last for the next 20, 25 years....

Life / One of more conspicuous Polish traits - inconsequence? [37]

But there wasn't democracy, because it was never voted on - it was placed there in the middle of the night.

Of course there is. Democracy isn`t only voting, it is also supporting the facts which have taken place.

We don't know how many people in the Sejm want it to stay, because there has never been a vote on the issue.

No need for any vote. The fact that the cross stays is enough.

Therefore - better for everyone if it stays.

Of course.

Life / One of more conspicuous Polish traits - inconsequence? [37]

delphiandomine: so why doesn't someone simply remove it?
maybe because it's not politically safe?

No, because there is democracy. The guys who want the cross to stay where it is create a majority in the Parliament (working on behalf of their voters) , they are more numerous and as such stronger than the ones who want to see it removed. Isn`t it simple??? In case the cross removal supporters try to take it down, the majority is going to react:

d

That is pure democracy.

History / Foreigners who fought for Poland [14]

Of course, we shall not forget this soldier, as long as PF is alive: https://polishforums.com/history/august-agbala-nigerian-soldier-warsaw-uprising-48456/

A brief summary of some of the Scots taken from

Yes, but don`t forget one Scotsman who is truly remembered and respected by Poles:
A Scotsman, Ketling moved to Poland where he became a Colonel of Artillery in service of the king of Poland John Casimir. Ketling got married to Krystyna Drohojowska, a former fiancee of his friend, Michał Wołodyjowski.Ketling was killed in the Siege of Kamieniec Podolski, when he (together with Wołodyjowski) blew himself up in a gunpowder depot.

Czechs and Slovaks fought too.

fcafa.wordpress.com/2013/06/05/czechoslovak-legion-in-poland-1939

After the fall of Czechoslovakia on the 15th of March 1939, many Czechoslovak politicians and soldiers left their country and emigrated. The larger part of these reached France, their numbers amounting to around 4,000. Of those that passed through Poland 1,212 soldiers (including 477 airmen) set sail (for France) from Gdynia in six freighters. They (the soldiers) entered the French Foreign Legion with the airmen going to the l'Armée d'Air.

About 1,000 soldiers remained in Poland (amongst them were 190 airmen) they didn't want to go to a foreign country, but like the example of fighting for the independence of their country as a legion as in World War I.

Poland fights

Czechs and Slovaks fought too.

There was also a Czech regiment which participated in the battle of Grunwald 1410:
radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/jan-zizka-at-grunwald-from-mercenary-to-czech-national-hero

Today, Jan Žižka is considered one of the greatest Czechs, and is admired as a brilliant commander and defender of his nation. But the reality was rather more complex.

The Battle of Grunwald, where 600 years ago the Polish and Lithuanian armies defeated the mighty order of the Teutonic Knights, changed the map of central Europe. The legendary Czech 15th century general Jan Žižka took part in the battle on the side of the Poles. But Žižka was yet to become the leader of the Hussite movement and a Czech national hero. When the armies clashed at Grunwald on July 15, 1410, Jan Žižka was a ruthless mercenary ready to fight for whichever side hired him.

History / Foreigners who fought for Poland [14]

OK. :):):) But please constrain from joking in such serious threads...

Developing 1863 January Rising context:
François Rochebrune (Polish: Franciszek Rochebrune) (born June 1[1] or January 1,[2] 1830, died November 19, 1870. was a French army officer and Polish general. He participated in the January Uprising against Tsarist Russia, in which he organized and led the Zouaves of Death.

Roche-

He reorganized the Zouaves of Death in Kraków and led them in battles of Chrobrze and Grochowiska.[3] In the latter engagement, after General Marian Langiewicz lost control over the Polish forces, Rochebrune, with the help of his Zouaves, took command and restored order,[3] by personally grabbing panicked soldiers, throwing them back into the line, pointing his gun at them and cursing in broken Polish ("Psiakehv! Ktoha godzina?" - "God dammit! Would you tell me the time?" - which according to contemporary sources was the only Polish he knew).[5]
