Life / Poles - what other nationality would you say you are most like? [125]

Ha ha - fair enough - didn't know that!

Czechs are free market atheists and agnostics, Poles are socialist Catholics.

My type is Hungarians. What do you think about it?

And you don't think Hungarians are Germans in disguise :)

My vote is Slovak.

The differences are slight.

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

That's how ever single one of our freedom-restricting laws came about. Some jerks couldn't get along properly in society so we have to limit everyone's freedoms because of them. We all end up paying the price for the jerks. Doing so dumbs down society to the lowest common idiot/ selfish prick.

That's a terrible tradeoff. There were already laws on the books to take care of people who infringe on others rights.

Excellent. Full agreement. (see above)

Right, but there is no need to punish everyone because some people can't control themselves. Those are personal problems that need to be dealt with by family, friends, and spiritual advisers for those who are so inclined. No need to legislate morality.

What we are coming to understand more and more in our society is that free will can indeed be exercised all the way into despair.

It's easy, leave people to their own devices. We should reintroduce personal responsibility and consequences for an individuals actions. No need for government coddling or moralizing. Once that person violates ones rights, whether property of personal, at that point governments need to step in.

Just out of curiosity, are most of you city folks? Anyone come from the country or live in the countryside now?

We call these the "good people". In contrast to the scumbags, criminals and dirtballs, the dregs of society whom we have already learned comprise most of the shack-up crowd.

Who's we? The crowd that wants more government intervention in peoples personal lives?

Life / The Polish national 'brand' [21]

Socially conservative, fiscally borderline socialist. Worst of both worlds.

it's worth remembering that includes no sex before marriage!).

Actually, it goes one step further. If the bride is not a virgin, you've got to stone her at her fathers house.

And I agree with you 100%. Marriage is a contract subject to changes in the law. Kind of a contract bundle.

Travel / Rumour Control: Wizz Air pulling out of Warsaw? [5]

Surely it can't be true?

It's not.

I imagine we'll all be using jetpacks before they finally develop Modlin into a budget airport

For bonus points, nothing has been done at Modlin. So I guess no reason to build the spur :)

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Average industrial wage is the same as average wage minus farm workers. Median income is the closest to a common wage, and minimum wage is unwanted government intervention in the labor market :)

The problem of course is that none of those take into account the massive amount of work performed under the table.

How much is it for a lamb chop? Expensive if i remember rightly from Poland.
Though I did find a butcher in Krakow who sold a half lamb for 25pln :)

dunno, probably not cheap. I'll have a look this afternoon.

Amazing.Couple weeks ago some college educated American told me that there is NO internet in Poland.I wish I knew it then.I have only 12Mbps.

No blue jeans or TV either, a land of savages!

Probably more relevant than just prices would be converting things into purchasing power, ie how many hours does the average (or minimum-wage) employee have to work to buy a...

Then we get into the median income debate again :)
According to the statistical office, gross average monthly wages comes to about 3500/mo, which everyone will tell you is a bit optimistic. But hey, lets go with that. That should net you about 2800/mo net. So about 16zl per hour of employment, net. Have fun with the calculator.

Haha, doesn't exist in the UK! :D Max is 20mb for about £20 a month.

25/1.5 through UPC is 80zl/mo

Tight git :P I use to pay 100pln for my 50m2 flat, though I felt sorry for the auld bugger who cleaned it. £20 for a cleaner over here.

Hey, it's not too bad for two hours of work, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, bathrooms, occasionally windows. She listens to stoner metal too, so there's usually a tip involved.

About £15 for the good stuff here.

Good cuts of beef are a bit more expensive, but if you like pork, Poland is the place to be.

120 Mbps???

yup, fiber to the house.

You can't catch a fish here without having a license but you can have as many kids and let others pay to raise them as you want. Something wrong with this...

Absolutely. Why should someone without kids subsidize someone with kids. In complete agreement with you there. Public schools financed through property taxes, tax credits (form of subsidies), Medicaid... bin it all.

Now, why should this only happen in a married couple? In an unmarried couple there can be a similar fear of retribution.

It's about respect for the other person in your life. My relationship has outlasted most marriages, through thick and thin. No need for a piece of paper. We have joint ownership of property, live together, have the same friends...we can't fall back on that piece of paper, we adjust ourselves to make things work because we want to be together. Good times.

Food / Help me like Polish food (recommendations) [48]

Soup - Zurek with white sausage.

Needs mashed taters to make it complete :)

i think that's tatanka :)

Interesting, is that a regional differentiation? I've only heard szarlotka here in Wroclaw.

for some people Polish food needs more flavor, spices... for some it's too mild and too fat... but hey, Poland is a Northern, cold country after all... :)

I've got some awesome chipotle mole that comes in handy more often than not...hot cock sauce works too (just google it, make sure safe search is on!).

Additonally, "domestic violence cases disproportionately involved unmarried couples with lower than average education. Most were minority or mixed racial (black male/white female) relationships. Assailants were likely to have had prior run-ins with police."

I had a read through a couple of studies (busy evening....). It seems that socio-economic standing has more of correlation to domestic violence and successful child rearing than marriage vs cohabitation. So the well off "cohabiters" should be ok :)

And the anti-marriage folks have been working to change this stigma to make non-marriage shacking up more socially and fiscally acceptable. But then we've seen the costs that this changing of perceptions rather than embracing marriage has had on society...

Keep in mind that marriage and breeding is also subsidized to a large degree in most countries... :(

Naw, surely they would have worked through it. I mean a quick visit to the priest, maybe a bit of him going upside her head, but at least, they'd be married, right?

f stop, apparently if you were married, you would have worked through your issues...

On a side note, wonder what the statistics are for domestic violence in married and non married couples...

Travel / EU citizen - exit the Prague airport when next flight is due 6 hours [3]

Yea, but if you want to go to the center, it could take a while, especially if there is traffic. I'd set aside at least an hour to get to the airport from old town square if you want to be safe...that having been said, the bypass is now complete and I've heard good things about traffic being a bit lighter :)

You can also take the metro to Dejvicka on the green line and take a cab from there.

To order a taxi, I'd suggest AAA. Just send them and sms at 606 999 069...the format should be like this:

ORD YOURNAME * ADDRESS

e.g.
ORD tony * dejvicak metro

they'll send you a confirmation.

Hope that helps
