USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

As I keep saying, sufficient originality. There must be a certain Polishness before it becomes Polish. For example, a decent part of Chinese cuisine is characterised as having MSG and being oily. The Japanese recognise it straight away and dull it down.

Language / Which language is easier for Poles? [43]

Yes but they should still be able to work it out and that's my point. They would see that I am foreign and wonder why I was referring to kark instead of szyja. If they had half a brain then it'd click what I meant. It's all about stems as I keep telling you.

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

This isn't the first time that the Guardian has leaked such data, Nomad. Watch Assange's interview, he often refers to them and controversy.

Delph's suggestion is more likely. Lepper was trounced in the voting stakes and he was going nowhere fast.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Stronger and bigger Poland? Are you seriously advocating imperialism and a drang nach osten here? Britain is much smaller than Poland but could nuke it into next week at the press of a button.

So you are not a PO man then?

Well, the reference is still the same so it's just ignorance not to be able to work it out IMHO. It's all about linguistic stems and awareness, grubas.

Yes but the stem is the same. Karkówka or karczek, yes. I'm aware of that but, again, I'm referring to the stem. They were necklaces na szyji, yes, but the essence of the words is the same. They both refer to the neck.

True, Sebastian. Grubas, you live in the US, right? So what difference does it make to you if you win Lwów back or not? Your beloved Polish government recognised Kosovo and that, for me, is unpardonable.

Grubas, both refer to the neck so it's not that different. Here in Silesia, kark refers to a guy with a big neck and not the meat.

DE, I agree. I was just going by associations as many Poles do. Salmon is associated with Scotland and Norway, I'd say. That's where the best salmon comes from IMHO. It does include some Polish dishes, yes. You have to apply the test of sufficient originality before calling sth your own, I'd say. Otherwise, it should be the case that you say 'we say X in our country', 'oh, we say Y'.

For example, it is highly possible that some Poles have unknowingly dished up sth similar. It fits with foods commonly used in Poland.

Even the 'Polish' menu you posted is debatable, delph. Sausage, yes. Hens, hehehe. Klopsy are pretty much Polish. Liver? European mostly. Gulasz is Hungarian. Gołąbki is the Polish version of a popular food in other countries. Salmon is more Scottish/Norwegian. Pork is also broader.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plum

China is the main producer of plums in the world. Poland isn't in the top 10 producers. Walnuts are known as Italian nut in Polish.

Herring is more Dutch than it is Polish.

Duck liver pate is French. Filet mignon too.

Ravioli is Italian.

Potato pancakes are Belarussian.

The rest is a mix with a lot being Polish.

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

He is behind Wikileaks. Watch his interview with David Frost. Lepper was not killed for whatever he might have known.

If that info was really that confidential then he would have been killed long before. It's not the reason. Has Assange been killed yet? Nope!

Scottish cheddar is in Biedronka. Is that Polish too? ;) Polish tuna from Mauritius or Thailand, LOL I see where you are going with this ;) ;)

Carp is found in many places and bigos, well you know my opinion on where that comes from.

The pierogi in Gazdówka are good :)

Well, that's your opinion. Not everyone is upper crust in life. Much of it comes from historical resourcefulness/ruggedness. Poles make very good use of what is around them.

It all goes back to what is truly Polish food and recognised as such through fair means. For example, if gołąbki truly Polish? I know many other countries with their equivalents, essentially the same thing. Bigos, as I keep saying, is German-Lithuanian. Pierogi could equally be said to be Chinese as they have stuffed pockets too. We should remember that a decent part of our cuisine here comes from Asia. Cabbage, the ubiquitous favourite of many a Pole, was given to the Celts by the Asians then passed onto Slavs.

I think Poles, in my experience through discussions, are too quick to call sth Polish. I have a 'Polish' cookbook but many of the recipes are decidedly foreign or international.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

We have a world citizen in the house :) :)

Remember, tea and supper are still widely used.

Too many English words in the Polish language? Have to have a word with the dictionary entry folk then :)

Poles eating bland food is fine as the people like it. Besides, it's affordable! 12 large pierogis for 5.50PLN is good value. Why price out the people that eat it? I don't see the sense in that. Food is a basic physiological need after all. Besides, whilst game is not exclusively Polish, it has taken pride of place on many upper crust tables around the country for centuries. Game in Poland is Polish enough to me :) :)
