Life / Turnips on my doorstep in a Polish apartment - is it a custom? [17]

Its part of an ancient Polish tradition...When the oldest spinster in the area reaches the age of 70 , and still has not found a husband , the locals seek out a suitable mate for her , and place turnips on his doorstep....

If the turnips are accepted , in other words taken into the house , then some time later the whole community will capture this new mate and drag him off to the wedding ceremony , where he will have to consumate the marriage in front of the wedding party...

i wish you a happy marriage....

Travel / Poland-My 9-day experience [239]

Poland is still quite warm at night. It's 18 but it feels like more.

My poor lady in Moscow is cooking in over 40 degrees in the daytime and 30 degrees at night...and she can,t open a window due to the peat fires around Moscow filling the air with smoke...

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

I always wondered why we in England called our country Great britain...?

I mean , its a bit big headed really , nobody thought to call the USA.. fantastic America , or France.. super France....

And while we are on the subject...what about national symbols...??

Russia chose the bear , a strong and noble creature from their country , Poland chose the eagle , another great creature from their country...The UK of course chose that great British creature...the Lion...errr hang on , we don,t have any lions in the UK...and never have had...whats that all about...???

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

Just answer these questions to yourself;

I think i would become a serial killer...and hunt them down one by one to kill them as slowly as possible....

Do you know somebody this happened to...?

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

Any guy thats been in a relationship with a loopy woman knows very well that a woman can push even the most mild mannered man towards violence....

My first experiance of it was way back when i lived in London...she would push and push the argument untill i wanted to hit her....My reaction was to go out for a ride on my bike and come back when she was in a better mood , but she would then threaten to trash the house , and some very expensive racing machinery , in other words , she wanted to give me no chance to avoid violence...

She grew up with her mum and dad smacking each other about , and i am sure she saw it as the normal way to go on...

Recently i was in touch with this woman again , after a 28 year gap , as she is the mother of my son , thankfully she has chilled out a lot , but i was not entirely suprised to find out that she has been in several abusive reationships , and also that her mum is now in a nuthouse , perhaps its in the blood....?

I don,t agree that violence is right , especially against a woman , but if some woman punches me in the face , she is quite likely to get one back , whatever the result is going to be....

The best option if its got to this stage is to walk away...but that option becomes difficult if you share a home and have kids...

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

You had some traumatic experiences in Poland... My God...

It was traumatic for the whole town...Polczyn zdroj is a small friendly town where usually the Policja cruise around the town bored stiff , because nothing happens.....

My friend Magda who lived above Aga was not in the least bit suprised at what happened.....

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

I knew of a woman in the town close to me that after a few drinks was willing to fight anyone , and i several times saw her punch one of her several boyfriends in the face...

She was quite a big woman , quite friendly when she was not drinking , i used to take her and her boyfriend to work in a tartak where i had a job for a short while...

Her boyfriend was quite a muscular guy , but not in the least aggresive , and he got smacked about a bit by her it seems....

One saterday night , after a bit of an argument she stuck a ten inch kitchen knife through his heart , he was dead before he hit the floor...All this happened in front of three of her four children , the youngest a boy of four...

My friend Magda and i had to take the kids to their grandmother , the house looked like a slaughterhouse...

Aga is now serving 14 years in a Polish prison... Antec is dead...!

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

They were helping ppl. You are really pathetic...

He was just stating a fact....The penalty for theft in the German army was pretty severe...and believe it or not looting was forbidden , at least to the ordainary German soldier...The ss were a law unto themselves , and were the only ones able to organise the mass looting of valuables from occupied countries....

A lack of transport was a problem for the German army all through the war , and there simply wasn,t the resources for the mass stealing of property by the normal army units....

And can we give up this childish belief that every German who in any way says something positive about Germany during the war years must be a Nazi...It makes about as much sense as saying every Pole is a communist...!

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

I still believe the vast majority of Jewish property that was not valuable was taken by the people around the homes of the Jews that were taken away....

I am not blaming the Poles for doing this....in wartime you do whatever you must to survive...If you had a situation where the Asians for example in the UK were treated as the Jews were and dragged off to be killed , then it would not be long before my fellow countrymen helped themselves to anything worth having from their homes , its normal human greed , and in wartime its a matter of survival...

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

the nazi german officers took it all,

So what the these German officers do with the hundreds of tons of furniture then...?

Must have taken a lot from the German war effort to move all this stuff....

Since they were billeted in furnished barracks it must have got a big cramped in there...?

I can understand them stealing anything small and valuable , but beds and wardrobes...nope i don,t think so...
