Travel / Krakow a safe and friendly city for foreigners? Read this! [161]

jonni wrote:

Mind you America doesn't even let Poles go there without a visa or work without a green card, does it? Shows what the Americans really think of Poles.

doesn't it?

Canada also showed what they think of the Czechs recently by stripping THEM of visa-free travel rights due to too many illegal Czechs living there.

funny what happens when you break the rules.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

Torq wrote:

Let's face it,
język polski is way too difficult to make it an official language of any international
organisation and expect people to learn it.

it's comments like this that allow me to sleep at night not feeling like i have a learning disability :)......(although there a select few out there that won't agree with your comment, Torq)

Travel / Why some travelers hate Poland? [45]

Delphiandomine wrote:

Not clean? If you pay for EIC tickets, the trains are usually spotless. Even the worst PKP PR trains are no worse than some in Western Europe.

i don't care how they compare to the rest of Europe. PKP is a cheap alternative, but dirty regardless.

Travel / Why some travelers hate Poland? [45]

if we're talking strictly from a tourist's perspective, i can't understand why a traveler would hate Poland.

Polish families in general are quite hospitable, so if you're popping in and out of apts. for a week or two visiting a friend's family for example, there's really not much to dislike.

it's still zloties here, so chances are your currency allows you to spend freely.

if you're a dude, well, we all know about polish girls....some of the finest specimens in the world.

the country in general is quite safe, assuming you're white.

although they're not clean, PKP, trams/buses are reasonably priced, and regarding trams, most foreigners don't pay for tram tickets anyhow.

for a foreigner, late May to late August, Poland can be an enjoyable place to visit.

Life / Why Poles are so crazy about their country? [55]

Torq wrote:

How long is the history of United States - 250 years or so? Polish is over 1000 years,
so why don't you come back in about 800 years and then we'll talk about short man
complexes and stuff ;)

HAHAHAHA.

I'm afraid to comment on this one because it's possible Torq left his computer on while he was in the bathroom or picking up the mail or something and some little kid walked by and posted something really quick when he wasn't looking.

Ziemowit wrote:

In 800 years time, the US may not even exist, so the US Americans may not have the chance to have complexes ...

HAHAHA, and then apparently that same kid may have walked over to Ziemowit's apt. and done the same.

Life / Trying to find a good office supplies store in Poland [5]

haha, this thread cracks me up, especially the Hanna Montana part.

i'll never understand office supplies in poland, especially notebooks. haha, i have to always sift through notebook after notebook, just to find one that doesn't have a unicorn on it or a color pattern that would make someone question my sexuality.

Law / I have to fix Karta Pobytu for EU citizens [20]

Jonnie wrote:

Note that this refers to citizens of EU countries only.

what does this mean? that you are an EU citizen?

I've done a KB several times, I can answer some questions, but mind you, I'm American....I don't know where you're from so it may be different.

First, yes, you need Zameldowanie. I didn't know you could get a temp. Zamel. If there is such a thing, I would doubt you can use it. a KB gives you residency for 1 year and you need to have Zamel. the whole time (legally).

yes, they require details of business/work.

a residency card costs around 450zl after everything is said and done.

after you apply, they have i believe 90 days to review it. after the review period, they may come back to you and tell you things you still need.

regarding taxes, well, that is all connected with your work. in order to work here (legally) you need to be registered with the tax office. and yes, you will have to show proof of this.

you said "long time here".....how long? with the current Schengan rules, it's a bit tricky.

USA, Canada / My boyfriend is being deported to Poland because his US visa expired, help needed [53]

convex wrote:

No one knows what the overstay rate is. It's not published. I have no clue what the reason is for the change in denying 1:4 to denying 1:9 over the course of 12 months.

just a thought:

it might be worth looking at how many poles actually applied for a visa to the USA 2 years ago, and how many applied over the past year. with the job market being down now, layoffs everywhere, etc., people they typically deny may not be applying as often now because they simply can't afford the trip. successful people with real estate in Poland almost always return. poor people looking for a new life elsewhere generally have less money and overstay.

all I'm saying is, you don't know how many applied, you only know what percentage of them were denied or accepted. during a crisis, people with money are generally not affected, so for them, they're still traveling and still getting visas just as easily as before the crisis because the criteria for "yea or nay" is still more or less the same.

not an opinion, just a thought.........

also, let's not overlook the fact that America had an economic meltdown recently.....this is sure to lower the number of applicants.

News / Hollywood's War with Poland. [150]

i think Poland got its payback though, considering they've been ripping off Hollywood ideas and making various forms of entertainment out of them for years and years.

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

when i read Mein Kampf, i expected to get a clear picture as to why, but i didn't. then i read it again, with the same result.

there is never a time where he systematically breaks it down for the reader. the entire book is disorganized and for the most part, poorly written.

nonetheless, it's a good read.

it all depends on what you consider to be fluent.

worth noting, I formally teach English teachers English (Poles). I consider them fluent.

Work / Are you teaching English in Poland? [120]

jonni wrote:

after 10 or 20 years doing it you might find you want a little more job-satisfaction, salary, personal development and value in the employment market.

20 years? in a private institution? so like....when you're 50, start looking for "something else"? who does that for 20 freakin' years?

what kind of job do you think you can land with a DELTA, that a guy with say 15 years experience in the industry can't?

jonni wrote:

Or for people who like professional and personal development and want access to jobs with better pay and conditions, not necessarily in bottom-feeding language schools or on company contracts which last as long as the firm's current training policy.

why would someone be limited to bottom-feeding language schools?

i'll never understand it. not in this profession.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

oh dear. what a little gem I have for you all that I most certainly had to include on my own personal thread, considering my reasons for creating it in the first place.

inspired mostly because people on this forum talk constantly about America, yet not only have they not lived and worked there, often times they've never even BEEN there. not a day.

anyway, let's get to the fun part. posted from everyone's favorite blowhard, Delphiandomine, just this week:

When you actually live and pay taxes in Poland, we can talk.

well Delph.......exactly. glad we're now on the same page.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

"Americans are lazy" - it may have something to do with the fact they have not very good taste as far as going for vacation, for example.

hello wrote:

Even by going to Mexico you can learn a lot about life and yourself as a person when spending time with native Mexicans.

that's because mexico, for the most part, is a dump.

i'd like you to give me the cost for this vacation "in good taste" for an American family of 4. 2 weeks, warm weather, English cannot be the country's first language, hotel costs and airfare. Family of 4.

GO.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

decided to resurrect my thread momentarily.

inspired by the "giving tips in poland" thread, I wanted to ask my fellow americans this:

do you think it's possible that in the future, Poland will begin to adopt the American bar culture system of tipping with every drink you order?

America, $1 tip per drink.

Poland, 1zl. tip per drink?

The avg. beer in the avg. pub in America costs around $4, so a $1 tip is 25%. If Poland tipped 1zl per beer, the tip would be about 15% (i'm comparing beer because with cocktails/whiskey/etc., sky's the limit)

Will it ever happen?

USA, Canada / How to get Drivers license in IL without social security? [96]

jamie06:

you sure all you illegals are so "productive" for the US economy? here's a link discussing immigration costs in California every year:

usgovinfo.about.com/od/immigrationnaturalizatio/a/caillegals.htm

for those who don't feel like reading, it's over 10 BILLION. add up the other 49 states, i'm sure you come up with a much larger number, especially Texas, NY, NJ, Illinois, Michigan, Washington, Florida, etc.

it's also worth noting that the United States govt. estimates that on avg., illegal immigrants pay 1/3 the amount of taxes a legal citizen does. not exactly stimulating the economy, is it.
