History / Kaczynski's Legacy [88]

I thought that Kaczynskiwas instrumental in turning down the loan?

I don't know that for sure. I don't know the details to be honest.

but the City president vetoed the plan when he couldn't get his dirty hands on part of the deal (allegedly).

That has been happening all over Poland to smaller or lesser degree. I used to work for a development company in Poland (private), so I had a glimpse of how things are done, when it comes to making a deal, in the end it is all about making profits for both parties. Municipal decision makers are known for being corrupted.

Roll on compulsory purchase - if things are left to PIS inner city councils then Poland is screwed.

I don't think such behavior is exclusive to PIS.

I was suggesting that loans cannot be embezzled with ease - state funds can and clearly are.

In that regard you are right, there is more control on how money is spent, however IMF has a really bad reputation for setting up the conditions of repayment (high rates), which has ruined many existing social security system for one (pre- existing condition of IMF), especially in 3rd world countries.

History / Kaczynski's Legacy [88]

fair enough I will look for the source.
here is one, it states that Poland have asked, then decided not to use it. My understanding is that it was approved by IMF, therefore I was not wring in stating what I did.

And how else is Poland supposed to service it's investments, debts, welfare payments et al.

I don't know Doug. The loans has been approved, I don't know if it had been used.

While it's still stuck in it's post communist era of refusing to deal with German money in city centre renewal such as on Korfantego in Katowice, where is the money to come from?

I am not sure what you are talking about.

UK, Ireland / Polish workers humiliated at the Laurens Patisseries - protest [45]

Sweet Jaysus thats unfair. Sorry to hear about that.

that was horrible but I am over it now. We all have stories of good employers and bad ones. This particular one was a law breaker on many levels. Small companies get away with many things even in Canada;)

Was it imperative that you were in the workplace?

I wouldn't think so, but I left for Poland 2 times that year without pay (was not in the contract), so I assumed that my boss was understanding enough in my situation.

Would the company have lost a lot of cash if they allowed you compassionate leave?

NO. The owner was very stingy.

Here you are entitled to 3-5 paid days leave if an immediate relative passes away.

Well, I was not offered that, even if it was statutory. I was too shocked to demand it considering the state I was in at that time.

I thought Canada would be similar or better.

It is in most work places. Regardless, I quit after 3 months and went back to uni full time, got myself a degree and plus, so good things come out of the bad ones in the end:). I don't think I would do it of my boss was a good one.

Going back on topic, we don't really know what happened and I would like to find out. Those stories usually have 2 versions.

Life / Bilet, controler and the Poland Police. [78]

You are not the only one.

lol that made my day;)

I can't remember the last time I bought a ticket, I've been asked a few times and just speak to them in English and they go away.

I still have yet to use that excuse in Poland:)

ah, the tram fine. I am guilty of that too. Did it at least a couple of times. I am such a horrible law breaker. No excuses to be honest, but it would be better if one can get into the system only with the valid tickets. The problem of fines would be solved.

useful vocabulary especially for SeanB:

kanar- the undercover ticket controller in Polish slang
jechać na gapę- to travel without a valid ticket.

when my mother passed away from cancer in Poland I did not get a day off at work. Was I angry?, no. I was still in shock to even think about it.

What is the purpose of the protest anyways. Did they break the law. Sure it is a case of human compassion gone wrong. Nothing less, nothing more.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Don't worry; you are still my favorite most punchable deranged little liberal nitwit on the PF :)

hey, you forgot about me. I am a liberal too:)

Aphro thinks that liberals are people who don't see everything in black and white:) and putting people in boxes it the worst thing one can do.

Work / English qualifications to start Teaching English In Poland. Is degree of some sort needed? [123]

While I'll admit that British-English CAN sound lovely (sometimes), that there is just as much "diversity" in British-English as in American.

true

If anyone has ever heard someone from the Manchester area speak then they'll know what I'm talking about.

good point, I actually love Manchester accent, but I like all accents, so there you go.

I'm planning on moving to Poland this summer and aspire to teach English. Am I to adopt a British accent and walk in to an interview sounding like Noel Coward?? ;-)

I would not worry about it too much, just be yourself. I have met many Americans teaching in Poland and as long as they were good teachers, they did well. Good luck!!!

It always amazes me how the British teachers posting on PF compete with each other. I guess there are more Brits on the teaching market then Americans in Poland, which could be a good thing, no?

UK, Ireland / The Daily Mail - coverage of the Polish people [161]

One of the biggest mistake this country has made in recent times was allowing these people freedom of movement in our land.

I agree because now we have to read your BS on PF day in and day out. On and on, like a foking broken record. Eastern Europeans cause some problems, but they have nothing to do with whatever is bothering you.

It is either about money or a woman.

UK, Ireland / Female health in Britain - Polish view [105]

That's the point. I didn't. I'm living in another EU country for a while. And I'm treated like a fire escapee rowing a boat for the paradise on Earth.

why do I get a feeling that you will always find something wrong with anywhere you go.

Some people have this talent for looking at negative instead of positive and you are one of them.

How long are you gonna stay in the UK?
