History / Poland and Orientalism [115]

since it was only thanks to the patronage of the Polish king that Prussia was able to turn protestant.

Hmmm...what about Luther??? Don't laugh but he is widely attributed with Protestantism in Germany, not Poland ;)
And aren't Poles catholic???

On on the topic of modern societies and identification with the national interest, it is a fact that the Polish nobility was one of the first to identify with the national interest

That's why they couldn't stop 3 partitions in a row....

You are an ignorant moron !

Why? Poles didn't develop any significant middle class before the industrialization under Prussia...

Poland had almost no civic middle class, the base of modern societies.

For that they had lotsa "nobles"...more than any other country ever had! ;)

History / Poland and Orientalism [115]

The Germans came across a country that in many respects was more politically advanced than themselves

Ummm...hardly possible. I doubt that some conqueror ever sees the conquered as advanced in any form. They lost after all...Especially the last partition as the home grown rascals more or less gave the country away. I wouldn't call that political advanced..

Do you have a link?

Speaking of Friedman he got another thing correct, Germany is a soft power excersizing its influence via money, thats a smart thing to do but requires patience and a LOT of money, while rich i'm not certain Germany is that rich.

No it isn't! And as we are mainly concentrated on trading..meaning interested mainly in good relationships and a good image with potential trading partners there is only so much money needed.

The rest goes into the EU....

Time for Prussia is never over, all it takes a solid pan-european crisis.

What would you call what we actually have to go through?

Germany believed and still believes itself to be superior which is why it f*cked its own chance at leading Europe.

Well...seriously...which self-respecting nationalist doesn't believe the sun shines out of his nation arse???

But now....even as Germany doesn't want to lead in this financial crisis, doesn't want to go to war...we can't do it right it seems :(

But I see good logic in some of his statements about Turkey.

You know...when he is so wrong on so many counts I wouldn't believe him in other topics....but time will tell! ;)

See how far Prussia went from the p*ss sized state to a regional power.

Heh:)
Poland wants to become another Prussia?

Maybe, but it should avoid the same downfalls as Prussia/Germany experienced. To much agressive power and Europe will show you to that you will lose in the end.

I seriously think the time of Prussia's are over in Europe...no sense in mourning failed chances and possibilities. Poles in their majority won't go for that nor will most other Europeans. It's done and over!

But this alliance will mainly be an economic alliance. Not for tensions or war.

But as BB as master of EU :) immediately reminded war, this alliance will need a strong defensive military power of course.

History has shown that alliances against someboy will let to war against said somebody sooner or later.

Not to mention that alot of your future slavic/eastern european wannabe partners are already in the same economical/military alliances you hope to defend again, with the rest waiting to get in....just saying ;)

Europe needs only one economical and military alliance..against -non-european alliance if possible, to avoid infighting!

Life / IS Poland in danger of becoming the next multi cultural sink hole? [201]

dont let any foreigners into Poland? its to early for any lessons to be learned.

Nope...IMHO the lesson should be to concentrate on Europe...there is free movement inside the EU and a free choice of workplace. There is no need to import them from other continents and other cultures....

And that's what Grubas meant too....I think!

Nun ja...better they start thinking about these upcoming questions NOW as when it's to late.

There was no discussion in Germany and we invited just everybody back in the 60's...there are alot of tensions now because of that. Poland would be stupid if they don't try to learn from other countries mistakes.

I am NOT reffering to EU citizens.Since Poland is a member of EU (which I am strongly against btw) we have to deal with EU citizens according to EU law,but I am talking about all other like Indians,Pakistanis and so on

Here we agree...I don't know why Germany's needs of skilled labor shouldn't/couldn't be fulfilled by EU-member workers...no need to look to other continents and cultures for that. Poland likewise.

When Poland catches up to western standard of wages and industrialization we will make POLES a skilled labor and immigrants we may or may not need to do cleaning and other deamining jobs. And then and only then Poland can introduce SHORT TERM visas for foraign workers willing to do jobs Poles don't want but after say 6 months contracts the foraign workers will have to go back to their countries of origin.

Well....Poland is under EU law and when you accept the possibility for Poles to wander across Europe and to look for work and life everywhere in the EU you have to accept that other workers from everywhere come to Poland in search for work and life.

Do you have an idea about how many Poles are right now immigrant laborers in other countries???

It goes both ways....

News / Visegrad Battle Group under the command of Poland [261]

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Yezhel has said he expects a combined brigade made up of Ukrainian, Polish and Lithuanian servicemen to be formed in autumn.

What will be the communication language? Will polish soldiers obey an ukrainian commander for example? ;)

I think all those countries don't want to get screwed by france and rest of europe and America again like in world war 2

Well...in that case they better leave EU and NATO first....

News / Visegrad Battle Group under the command of Poland [261]

I can hint that with Germany (perhaps) joining in, it would make Germany having a lot more influence then being in the EU sharing power with France, U.K. Having her "own" alliance led by Poland which she could back up

Not these powergames again....that exactly was the reason for centuries of tensions and bloodshed in Europe.

Germany has enough influence and doesn't want more...especially not militarily. There are no games to be played anylonger.

The only ones who should moan about this and should try fighting against an creation of this is mainly Western Europe and U.S.A.

Why?

What makes you think this Visegrad group is hostile to the EU? It's made up of EU-members (+Ukraine maybe)...your thinking is so 19th century.

Do you want that back?

1. Ukraine still sits on a fence with respect to anything EU related

Well...what better way to get Ukraine down from the fence on your side then to invite them and bind them to you.
Isolating them, ignoring them only helps your adversary.

Visegrad group + Ukraine would actually be a very smart move!

History / Russians 'tortured to death' in Polish camps? [58]

MW..If I meet someone who tells a polish joke...what does that tell me about Poland?

The french-german relationships are okay...Germany get's regular good grades from the French up in the 70-80 percent for years...that's good as it gets. More would be unnormal.

And ask yourself why the Soviet-communists in Poland should paint the Soviets in glorious light against the fascist West, they had been mortal enemies for decades.

goethe.de/Ins/jp/lp/prj/wza/defr/en2281618.htm

A joint German/French history schoolbook....you can't much more reconciliate than that!

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4972922.stm

dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,2078903,00.html

I found that fact most interesting...it hat been French and German youth behind that in the first place:

...
Naturally, students are the book's target audience, but they were also the impulse behind it. Participants in the French-German Youth Parliament meeting in 2003, on the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Franco-German Friendship Treaty, proposed the project, which was then taken up by the German Department for Foreign Affairs and the French Ministry of Education.

Can you imagine a Polish-German joint history book some time?

Well...I'm okay with that.

I learned to like the Poles actually since I came to this board...maybe it doesn't need to take another 65 years between us.

*beer*

PS: Apropos Jawor...any news?

Indeed that guy's claiming Germans acted respectfully towards Poles on the basis of one photograph of a marked grave some Germans dug for some Polish soldiers killed in battle during WW2 infuriated me not only for its revisionism

I'm sure the photo is faked...somehow doctored...these mean revisionists them...can't be trusted!

Germans shamelessly learned from that too..not wishing another holocaust onto the jewish people as some arab-lovers do.

So i believe after WWII Germany needed to have its balls removed via gassing everyone in uniform, civilian or military, they'd never start even thinking about revisionism after something like that.

Feel better now?

*hugs Sok* I like you too!

That said i differentiate between Germans then and today, you're still not our friends but at least business can be done.

You know that is the one attitude I really have problems with (seen in Poles and Jews especially).

All this griping about wars never stops "business" or holding out the hands for money and support. Where is the pride in that?

I can accept grumbling and mumbling and hostility but I have problems with that...If you really hate someone you don't take his money or make "business" with them.

Today Germany and Poland are about to get joint at the hip as France and Germany already are...where does that leave your death wishes??? ;)

Then you have organizations like Bund der Vertriebenen on the forefront of Polish-German relations, repeatedly labeling the German death camps as "Polish camps",

When and where did they do that??? It happens in the media some time but else?
