News / Poland 2010 ( A bad year ) [27]

such a pessimistic view of things. I just returned from Poland, the weather was great, the new President has been elected in a democratic elections, which means that there will be less Kaczynski's influence in keeping the Poland divided. I don't see a reason to live in the past anymore. In my opinion Poland has been able to overcome a dangerous situation when there was a vacuum of power after the Smolensk crash. Lesson should be learnt from that.

I think that people should start to be responsible more for their own actions instead of blaming things on tragedies and the weather, since both cannot be avoided. It is important HOW the conflicts and tragedies are handled, NOT that they happen at all.

UK, Ireland / The secret Polish gay men in the U.K [133]

M-G, Polonius is a heterosexual white Anglo-Saxon protestant, and that perhaps explains his thoughts ...

no, he is Polish, therefore not a WASP, and btw_ wasp culture tolerates homosexuality the last time I checked.

Love / Polish men what is the worst thing a girl can do upon first impression? [360]

oh, boy, this thread it too funny:)

I like smart, stylish, feminine and classy girls with which I can have a decent conversation and to whom I don't have to explain three times what I mean.

smart is somebody who knows what is going on in the world and has his/her own opinion
stylish- has her own style, but is not going to wear something just to follow the fashion, she knows what she looks good in and she wears it,

feminine- I guess I don't have to explain that;)
classy: wild in bed, good manners at breakfast;)
and on, and on , and on.....:)

History / The Pogrom on Jews at Eishyshok (Ejszyszki) in Poland [68]

well, if the Germans killed most of the Jews in 1941 (according to BB WIKI link) then, it could not have happened that in 1944 another 3000 Jews were killed because there were only 30 left.

Also, AK did not exist before 1942, so if those Jews were killed in 1941, then it was not them....
I am not sure why the historian mentions 1944.

That is my take on it, based on those two sources.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

Your sister lives in Poland - is she Polish?? What about you???

she has never left Poland:). How is that relevant to the conversation we are having, she is a Polish citizen.

She said, what's translates into "sick nation".

yes, and her husband who is Polish has been saying that for years:). SELF CRITICISM I suppose.

As if "ogłoszenie stanu klęski" (announcing the state disaster) could stop the floods!!

it cannot and you know it, but it will mobilize better help for people who are in trouble, thus far according to Polish news, 12 people have died because of that disaster. More will.

Polish people are not dumb, they don't need annoucement of disaster to start preparing for expected floods or fight flood .

so it HELPS people after ......I am looking at the whole picture. People will need that in order to pay for the damages.

Who cares what politicians are doing at this time in Poland .They have the rights to prepare for the presidential election.

well, there has been a controversy about that and I am basing it on what it is POLISH press and I agree with what Darius said that how the disaster is handled will have an impact on the presidential election in the future. Simple stuff really.

Aren't you wasting your time???
Przygarniał kocioł garnkowi!

no, I am not. If I were in Poland, I would be helping with the disaster. I am too far away.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

Is there a government that does?

is there? I was specifically referring the the worsening situation in Poland at the moment and I was actually quoting my sister, so maybe we can leave the discussion on government for a different occasion?.

Your sister didnt explain you why.

what is there to explain: who is more important at the moment, the people whose houses are under the water and they need immediate help or the presidential election? Both are, but not pronouncing it a state of emergency is a clear sign that the government is more interested in having the election in June. Selfish in my opinion, but please explain to me what my sister meant, because you seem to know better. Wait, you are sitting on the internet worrying if Canadians/ Americans hate Poles:)

some

yah, some.........and if I keep reading this thread, I might be leaning in that direction too.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

My sister lives in Poland, just finished a conversation with her a couple of minutes ago and she said: "chory narod" when commenting on the current situation in the south.

Stan kleski zywiolowej nie zoastal ogloszony poniewaz to nie pasuje politykom, ktorzy startuja do wyborow prezydenckich.
So here is your answer I think.
Polish government does not care for its own people, even if they lives are being in danger and they need HELP.
So if there are a couple of people who happen to be Americans/Canadians who have some opinions about Poles is irrelevant at the moment and you should be helping your Polish folks instead of wasting time on the internet, no?

I am in Canada and most people here have other things to worry about then hate Poles, believe me.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I was driving around today and I have never seen such a big floor in all my life.

yes, apparently it is worse then 1997 and that was bad:(.

The unregulated rivers were in the same state as in 1997 according to Gazeta, but still I feel sorry for those people who have to leave their houses.

well, Hungary and Austria have problem as well:(

this comment just about killed me;) no pun intended, but I kind of agree that Greek should stick to running restaurants and let somebody else do their books;). Not a deep analysis of the Greek tragedy, which has actually influenced today's stick market (in case people did not hear, or was it a guy who instead of million pushed the billion button- both cases are tragic and rediculous

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

people mix languages in order to communicate.
There is no such a thing as purity of the the language from the linguistic point of view, since languages change, evolve, borrow and so on.

So here it is, especially for a pissed of Rychlik: it is a natural process that people will do it when different language groups interact. the main function of the language is COMMUNICATION first, although some language purists think that it is a crime to borrow and mix. NO so since it has been done forever.

Purity of the language smells of nationalism to me and it has been a part of nationalistic discourse.
English has been lingua franca of business and the internet, but as Sky says, we might be mixing other languages soon.

Love / Are Polish men romantic and caring or... "plain"? [85]

it all depends on the upbringing, not where somebody is from, nor it depends on nationality, it all depends on how one was raised at home.

It also all depends on who we call losers, people who I consider a loser (although there are no losers really if they are alive and work, since life could be dangerous sometimes), might not be a loser to someone else. I usually think of people as losers who I just don't get along with.

Kazda zmora znajdzie w koncu swego amatora;)

Whereas in Poland, city people do look down on the country people in a way which regards them as almost sub-human, backward, and like something from a previous century.

possible, but I noticed that people from the villages and small towns do much better when immigrating then the snobbish city people, just an observation. So it is a myth. People from smaller places are generally more driven and more ambitious in general.

UK, Ireland / Polish workers going back to Britain [14]

you should meet the people who work in ZUS or Poczta Polska, I am sure you have, but the ZUS ones are just terrible, well, some. I had so many fights with ZUS that I finally left Poland lol.

UK, Ireland / Polish workers going back to Britain [14]

not following the labour law in Poland is one of the reasons why so many leave and are willing to work for peanuts, bearing often difficult conditions regardless of education.

Also, it is ( I heard) financially hard for the employer to pay the worker a full wage, because it is related to high costs, which in this case is ZUS, which part of it has to be paid by the employer. Therefore many hire people on contracts, so the employee covers the cost of ZUS and such. How much of it is true, I don't know, but when I worked in Poland I worked as independent worker and I had no choice, otherwise I would have not been hired.

More and more companies in Poland stray away form paying ZUS for the employers, because it is too expensive.

I guess here lies the explanation for a mass exodus of young and educated people in Poland.

Well, some anyways.

On the other hand many people get jobs because they know somebody, so they are hired not because of what they know, but who they know.

I go along with what you say in your posts, aphro, I read them closely. You made some fine points in your last post!! :) :)

lol It must be those 3 coffees I have had.

It's victim sindrome.

I would agree with that. Until the victim syndrome disappears, we will hear about it more. It might take another generation.

History / The Polish Blame Culture! [330]

Aha, so you believe that the blame culture is very low here, aphro?

I have never said that and I am beginning to think that you either don't read my posts,or just assume what you want to assume. There is and I actually explained to MG the reasons for that ( well, some). I also agree that some people are more STUCK in it then others in Poland.

I also know that Anglo - Saxon culture deals with such issues in a different way, so partly it is a cultural thing as well.

I also know that some Poles like to take less responsibility, or have a problem with admitting when they do something wrong. It is a Polish trade of some people in Poland.

But, I would not call it a BLAME CULTURE.

History / The Polish Blame Culture! [330]

That's just not true, aphro.

what is not true? Which part of my post. I was trying to explain why Poles still whine about the WW2 'batrayal". and was replying to MG ( I wish people read stuff more carefully on PF)

Many people in Poland, esp older people, still lay the blame at the feet of others.

Hey, I talk to my father once I weak: I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) and it costs me money to listen to it tooo.........

If you lived here, you would know that.

I have live in Poland longer then you have, so I am not sure how your "observant" eye is better then mine, unless I have misunderstood your post all together.

What is so hard to understand about 2 crazy men with 2 crazy ideologies?

you lost me here:)

it is noticeably different and for the better. still a little way to go yet.

it is a long way to go, which is a good thing, no?;)

History / The Polish Blame Culture! [330]

In short, your life's not changed, because you haven't experienced what it was like before it all changed.

I disagree and I know why you are saying it. People who lived in a democratic and free society cannot really comprehend how it was t live in a society, which was not free.

All those feelings, resentment about the WW2 were bottled up for years and now they are picked up by another generation. That is my take on it, so your argument that this generation did not have their lives altered is spot on, however that particular generation is voicing what the previous generation could not. Delayed reaction I think, but it will take some time, before it is over.

For somebody like you who grew up in a free and democratic society it is hard to understand a different world and Poland was a different world prior to 1989. The same goes for Shelley.

I don't agree with such a reaction, because I think that Poles should have moved on a long time ago.
Poles have moved on and Poland is a very dynamic country in comparison to what it was prior to 1989.

News / Polish, non-speakers told to bring interpreters to municpal buildings [7]

I believe the EU does prohibit discrimination based on language, so this to me implies there should be more than one option available.
There should be at least a person who speaks English in since this is Wydzial dla Cudzoziomcow - what is the point of having one if there is nobody there that speaks or does not wan to speak English (as one of the clerks indicated), also those women were pretty unhelpful.

While I applaud the sense of nationalistic pride this shows, I'm not sure I applaud the xenophobia it also showcases. As an EU member, should they not also need to have government office employees who speak other languages? Perhaps at the very least English and French?

national pride has nothing to do with being unhelpful to people who don't speak Polish.
Their behavior was a clear sing of xenophobic behavior.

Welcome to EU Poland.

Good luck motylek:)

Love / Are Polish Women cold and aloof? [249]

This is bcoz you speak with your English akcent Bev.It's sometimes really hard to understand you Brits but I guess it all depends where did you learn English and what you are used to.

maybe you should train yourself in understanding other accents, I know Canadian accent but I understand most of other accents, not problem. So you probably have no ear for accents in general, but that can be changed with the right attitude, which you obviously don't have.

Talking about over the border, Berlin is a bit of a stretch for commuting.

I agree, but he is better off living in Szczecin then is some Ossi small town on the border.

West Berlin is a wet dream straight out of the 60's.

so true.

Like a bunch of little brothers to the monstrosities in Marzahn. And then you have the crown of west berlin....Neukolln.

Cannot agree more. I spent many weekends in Berlin and there is never enough time. Not many people know that there are many water channels and taking a boat trip, even though it is quite tacky is a lot of fun.

Seems like most of the older nice apartments are in the East. I lived in Pankow, loved it.

ha, how I envy you!!!!!

true. There is also more variety.

Ossi panelaks are nicer than Polish panelaks?

Only part of Berlin was Ossi, there is a huge Wesi population, or rather original Berliner population living in Berlin, it is really a mix of both worlds and I find it really interesting. Great city overall.

You mean full of gay bars and clubs and a city where even the Burgermeister is gay.

well, in case you did not notice, or failed to notice since you always concentrate on shaggin and other similar perspectives, Berlin is a capitol city of Germany, with lots of museums, art galleries, great restaurants, great music clubs, great underground scene, great shopping, used to be one of the largest construction sites in Europe and as a result, some interesting architecture - new, renovated and old. Oh, and one does not need to know German go get around really, which the OP speaks anyways.

So there is more to the city, but if you go there to get you gay fix- good for you.

Have you considered living just across the border and commuting?

that is a good suggestion as well, but the renting prices need to be compared and in this case I am out of touch. There have been cases of Polish people moving across the board and commuting to Poland since at one point the real estate prices were more attractive then n Poland, but that was in the past.
