UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

Not in the Czech Republic.

How is Czech for buying a joint, for example? can you buy it in a shop?
Or do you have to know someone?

wow, that would be scandal.

I don't think so, I was told it produces amphetamine for "medical use" in armies abroad.
I am trying to find something on google but I can't, may be it is not true?

??? What for? To give it to soldiers?

Yes.
I don't know if it's true but a couple of people told me.

Speed is methamphetamine.

Speed is to Methamphetamine what cocaine is to crack.

wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_methamphetamine_and_amphetamine

What is the difference between methamphetamine and amphetamine?

Seriously i dont even know what that is.

Speed is to Methamphetamine what cocaine is to crack. it's a harder form of speed.

In the ads I saw, it said that these were mug shots which were taken over a ten year period, when she was caught breaking the law to feed her habit.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Lady with an Ermine is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci,

The ermine, a stoat in its winter coat, was a traditional symbol of purity because it was believed that an ermine would face death rather than soil its white coat.

How common is it and what drugs are the most popular?

I would say much more common than in Poland.

Marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy are probably the most popular then a smaller number of people do heroin, crack, Meth amphetamine and these are generally seen as harder drugs. (although many people would put cocaine as a hard drug too).

Life / Winter 2010/2011 in Poland, is it going to be bad? [114]

can't beat a hoar frost on a cold winter's day.

Nothing like a cold crisp morn,
With no bacteria or viruses airborne.
Chopping up logs to put on the fire
The flames licking the wood, is something to admire,
I had a better ending for this, I could have sworn...

Roasting some sweetcorn?

With my comfy old slippers worn?

But have a steady supple of wood, I have to warn?

Bugger.

on the slopes a' boarding

Winter in Poland can be fun,
Skiing down powder with your hun.
With a flick of the board,
Comes great reward.
either that or you end up on your bun :)

Life / Winter 2010/2011 in Poland, is it going to be bad? [114]

I've noticed some Members left this site,
Sure to be back on winter's cold night.
With a glass of Bailey's to warm their hearts
And talk in rhyme, now that's an art ;)
While outside a quiet blanket of white.

-- I always like to infuse a little culture when I can.

On PF, culture is in short supply,
I've seen yoghurt with more, than this guy.
Normally I wouldn't bat a lid
But a rhyme i will type for this kid.
But there's probably no point, sigh...

Life / Winter 2010/2011 in Poland, is it going to be bad? [114]

Im prepared this year.

Like a squirrel with his stash of nuts,
We'll brave the winter, we've got the guts.
With a nip in the air,
We shan't despair.
We'll just light the fire to warm our butts!

Except for convex, who'll fly away like a migrating bird.

News / Human Trafficking in and from Poland [80]

Trafficking automatically makes you think of prostitution, but the majority of those trafficked aren't working in the sex industry.

So what do the majority do? Is there a breakdown?
I did assume most human trafficking was about the sex trade but I know nothing about it.

News / Tusk cracks down on designer drugs ("dopalacze") in Poland [171]

There are also 'dry' towns. If the local popualce vote in a referendum that they want no off-licence shops or pubs within their town's limits, then so be it. That is true democracy.

when I was looking to buy a house here in Poland, I viewed one very beautiful and very cheap house. I asked the owner/seller where was the nearest pub and he told me that there was none, as it had been closed down by the wives in the area.

Democracy shamrockracy a bit of dictatorship is fine, so long as I am the one dictating ;)

Unlike what you may think of me, it was not on those grounds that I didn't buy the house.

Great thread Aphro!

I like the bottom part of your posts with a bold title and a summary of what you are doing, it's like reading a journal.

And in the mornings with my coffee, while I am waiting for a call or something on the internet, it's a great read.
Keep up the good work and don't try to be like others, it will only lead to disappointment, you are a snowflake and there is noone else like you! (Okay maybe I am reading too much into the boot thing but hey, I it's just the way I feel).

Go Girl! :)

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

Rent went up from 750 to 950PLN in my current place

Why did it go up so much, did they do a refurbishment?
That's quite an increase.

It works out that we pay much the same, fractionally more

That's good then, good for you.

A future kid being right up there

So we might hear the pitter-patter of little fingers on a keyboard :)
Fair play to ya, it's all ahead of you.

Congratulations Seanus on having your own place, you've been thinking about it for a while.
That's a good price too!

If it's not too personal a question, how is rent compared to your mortgage. you don't have to answer of course, as it is a bit personal)

Life / Gypies/Indian-looking women with kids beg for money in Poland [143]

Just a quick question there zetigrek, what makes you think this house was made from profits of forcibly beating begging children by the Gypsie mafia?

Or was it only meant as an example of what someone could do and actually be just some guy's house?

Life / Alcohol problems of Polish people [141]

At this stage this thread has become a competition rather than what the OP intended...

But I have never ever seen drinking like in Lithuania:
...
In comparison, the Irish and Poles are teetotallers.

I heard when I lived there that the lads would leave a metal pipe in the snow, buy a cheap perfume, and pour the perfume down the pipe. The 'idea' was that the 'impurities' would freeze to the pipe (alcohol having a lower freezing temperature), allowing the alcohol to come out the end of the pipe to be drunk, to be drunk.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

so for this purpsoe a new car is preferable

only that Poland is the biggest buyers of second hand cars in the E.U.
So for this purposes, naaaaaaa!

approximately 30 miles away and a 20 min car journey by motorway

I live 30 KM from Krakow, cost of private bus 4.50 Złoty.
It is about the same price for the public bus but they aren't so often.

Good list, I will produce a similar list but I need sleep right not, cost-free :)

-- 6-pack of local beer £6-£7 in off licence(Liquor shop) half that price in a supermarket.

You get a six pack for 3/350 in a supermarket?

Meat is Murder

So how much is an assassination these days? :)

-- 200-litre fridge £100

It is more expensive here, especially when compared to average wage.

-- cinema ticket £3.50-£5

There has been a dramatic increase in cinema tickets both here and in Ireland.
Are you talking about one of those new fandangled multiplex type places in the city?

We should state if it's in the city or in the sticks.

-- daily newspaper £1.20

120 PLN here for a tabloid.

-- litre of vodka £15

We might need to name the vodka, you know yourself ;)

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

In most religions infidelity is grounds for divorce anyway is it not?

My point was, if you are not a monogamist, you shouldn't get married even if you have no religion.
Unless you have an agreement with your partner but I would not count on that, as I couldn't see it working long term but hey!, that's just me.

*If it's tradition, pressure, love, reckless abandon... none of them seem to be good enough to even get a tatoo!

Tradition and love are not good enough to get tattoos?
Thank goodness I ain't got none then :)

*If it's insurance, economics, sense of safety - all false, judging from divorce rates and lawyers raking it in.

People who marry in to money are laughing at this.

*If you think you're going to be a better person because you signed that paper - that hardly ever works. It's not the same thing like paying a lot of money for the gym will make you go more often.

It depends on how you view it and I do not see marriage remotely similar to joining a gym.
But only time will tell, so far so good :)

To me, marriage does not represent commitment - staying together whether you're married or not, does. Seems much more so when you're not married.

Okay, I think we can agree that marriage does not mean happily ever after but... there's always a but... it is an agreed on commitment. Whether it works or not is up to you but at least it is something.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

How about we start with rent (in a city), petrol (gas), a computer, milk, bread and beer, you know the essentials :) and compare them to wages.

This is why I think this thread is very interesting.

Edit*

-- packet of 20 cigarettes

These have trebled in the last two or so years since I gave up (yeeay me!)

-- a McDonald's cheeseburger

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mac_Index

-- the cheapest new car you can buy

Poland is the biggest buyers of second hand cars in Europe, so this would not be a good one. (or so I have heard).

-- public transport fare (bus, tram, tube)

Good one, also private buses are very reasonably priced and should be included as part of public transport.

-- cup of coffee at café

Is a "milk bar" included?
3-6 Zloty.

I will get prices for these, just not now.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

It's only expensive for those that can't afford it.

What I mean is, salaries are higher and although we are using a playground as an example, it is not an intrinsic part of life to pay for such a thing, unlike what I have mentioned above.
