News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

I agree - at last. One of the reasons I stopped frequenting such premises was the nasty odour of smoke.

Well then you are in for a shock!

When the smoking ban was implemented in Ireland, the number 2 complaint (after the smokers) was the odours of all that stinks in a pub but is happily masked with cigarette smoke. I am not talking about poorly ventilated places, as that is disgusting but normal bars.

Farts, body odour, milk that had been spilt (don't cry) under the bar counter and anywhere near the toilets... Bars had to spend millions on refurbishing their establishments.

History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

No, the 'Polish' bear was not invited. And that is clearly because all British people are utter bastards.

Maybe they should change the memorial to an empty plinth, to highlight the absence of the bear in the London Victory parade of 1946 and just spray paint, ''Brits are bastards'' on it? in bear handwriting obviously, anything else would look stupid.

xcvvcxvxcv

There are some nice photos of the bear on the web, if you google image "Private Wojtek" but I can't post them, they are another forum or something.

Edit* Wojtek already has a sculpting of him in London!

Wojtek helps transport box of ammunition - sculpture in Sikorski Institute, London (wiki)

At what? What is it attempting to achieve, and why should property rights be violated to achieve it when there are other solutions?

Because it's about a nanny state taking away your liberties until people will be mollycoddled so much they will suffocate from the cotton wool in their helmets.

Arse to it!

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Neighbours building walls because of plot divide dispute? ;)

The corner of a reservoir?

I think you are looking for Poland in photo riddles Jonni but I can see how you could have made the mistake easy enough.

Is it a reservoir?

Polonia / Contemporary German upbringing - Polish view [11]

Sounds like a case of the Terrible twos.

A child developmental stage which normally occurs around the age of two (but can start earlier) and consists of toddlers often saying no and throwing temper tantrums.

The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland

The grass dies.

The technology used in house building (this is a whole thread in itself)

Often, when eating in a restaurant, when the stranger at your table is finished eating, they will say 'thank you' to you as they leave or when they leave a shop etc...

I find it interesting, the way poles sit there and tell you how **** Poland is and when you agree with them on a point, they immediately ask you, why don't you like Poland? They really do have a lot of complexes. Also the way, you are questioned about everything and as soon as you start to ask the person questions back, they become offended.

I think we have a three way split:

Ireland: Irish people will tell you how **** Ireland is and want to hear how **** you think it is (over a pint).

Britain: British people will tell you how great Briain was (they went as far as calling it 'Great Britain' *slaps forehead*) and don't care what you say.

Poland: Polish people will tell you how **** Poland is and don't want to hear how **** you think it is.

Regarding when to shower:

Also, it has to be said, assuming most people have sex at night a morning shower makes more sense in many ways.

Well, that's one interpretation of dirty sex, it wouldn't be mine but each to their own ;)

I'm sorry but staring is simply rude - end of story. There is no culture that I am aware of in which it is not regarded as rude.

Poland, actually as a European I have been stared at a lot in different countries, having been the only white guy there. It is different but as you know in Ireland, it is taken to the other extreme, any eye contact at all is instantly diverted.

Ah, I have gotten used to this here and think it is funny.
Especially when you talk in English, people standing right beside you, at a bus stop for example, will have no problem turning towards you and just looking at you in pure astonishment, very close to your face. Then it is curiosity but I still think it's funny.

My thought is, is there a line here between the old west and east? Westeners more likely to keep lights on and letting the water run, and old easternes preserving and turning off every light as they leave the room?

No, it is simply a financial matter, we pay for electricity and water and Norway is a filthy rich country, that's all.

Today, in Carrefour, I put the basket on the floor next to the rack. No problem, whatsoever.

That's how change starts!
Rosa Parks would be proud :)

One I still think is strange coming from God's own country, (that's Ireland you heathen;) is the amount of pûrn, in Kiosks, petrol stations...

Law / How to register a new business in Poland [129]

Hello walter2010,

And welcome to the Polish forums.

You can use the search box in the top right corner of the screen, if you scroll up.
Just type in key words to find what you are looking for.

For example, I came up with these:

polishforums.com/business-economy-14/to-register-new-business-poland-31224/]How to register a new business in Poland

polishforums.com/archives/2009/business-economy-14/registered-office-polish-company-37652/]Registered office for Polish Company

links merged

Also whether Auctioneers need to be registered in Poland and whether they need a license to operate.

I don't know the answer to this.

Good luck.

Food / Cornish game hens in Poland? [13]

Cornish game hens: Despite the name, it is not a game bird, but actually a typical chicken that is slaughtered at a young age and therefore is smaller in size. Though the bird is called a "hen," it can be either male or female.
Most sources credit Alphonsine and Jacques Makowsky of Connecticut for developing the small bird in the mid-1950s. A Saturday Evening Post article from July 1955 credited Mrs. Makowsky with coming up with the idea to breed the Cornish game chicken, a small bird with short legs and a plump, round breast that she had discovered in a book.

I had never heard of them before.

Removing shoes when entering houses. This was odd for me.

I like this one a lot, why bring outside filth inside?

A few things it took me a while to get used to are:

- Strangers staring at you all the time.

- People go to work much earlier and go home earlier.

- Toilets that you can see your poop, although I did see them in Lithuania and the Netherlands too.

- Buying things in a shop by weight, like clothes.

- Shaking everyone's hands all the time, when we meet and when we part (except over thresholds???)

- Chimney men dressed in Black, with the hat.

- Driving on the wrong side of the road ;p (I am well used to it by now)

- Although I find Polish very similar to Irish in mentality, sensibilities and humour, I find it harder to "crack their shell" and get to know people here. I am not saying they aren't friendly but, especially initially, much more standoffish.

- The extreme weather (comparatively speaking) it is like a several different countries depending on what time of year you are here. Plus 35 to Minus 35.

- The sour foods.

- The fireplaces with the glass on them (not open).

I could go on all day.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I finally got served, but it was limited by pointing out to me forms and regulations I should get familiar with.

I have noticed how willing the "bullet catchers" are to answer their phones, so I have learned that it is far better to ring them and ask before going anywhere.

But just don't be surprised that when you have a list of documents that are required, that when you go there a different list of documents will be required or at least the person who is talking to you thinks so...

Last time I was at the ZUS office they gave me a NIP number, I didn't ask for it and I didn't want it. Which I find funny because so many people break their bollox trying to get one.

I still don't understand why such a simple thing as getting an update should require a high level of intelligence.

Keeps the riff-raff from doing any business :)

I don't understand why everything has to be stamped, I get a twitch when I see a line of stamps beside a stone faced "Bullet catcher".

* I call them ''bullet catchers'' because they are the ones that get roared at by the public, they are the front line of the war known as bureaucracy, they have no power and can't change the requirements and a lifetime of "doing the job" has made them tough.

News / Tusk cracks down on designer drugs ("dopalacze") in Poland [171]

All this nonsense about mafias and drug dealers being delighted over the crackdown...

You really have no idea what is happening in the real world.

Head shops have been burned down by drug dealers in Ireland because they were losing money.

It was innovative of Poland to ban shops selling psychoactive substances

No, it wasn't Poland's innovation.

Detain the user of joints, coke, designer drugs, etc. and set him free only after he has divulged his source.

Do you know what would happen to you if you were detained and then set free? You'd be dead.

Only gangsters regard snitches as the most horrible creatures to be destroyed.

Yes and that is the reason why they would kill you, survival.

I think it would be far better to actually educate people on the substances in headshops. Then and only then can people make an informed decision.

News / Tusk cracks down on designer drugs ("dopalacze") in Poland [171]

But it's high time Poland provided some positive input into the fat, old wh*ore of Brussels.

You have changed in to quite a vulgar poster, why can't you say what you want without the name calling?

Poland was right not to rush into the euro zone because only it weathered the crisis.

They have to, it's in the contract.

It was right in eschewing widespread flu

It was not a matter of right, Poland is a poor country and couldn't afford it, also you forget the staunch criticism about not having bought it.

Now a blanket crackdown on this poison could set another good example.

Yes, the Mafia will be delighted.

News / Tusk cracks down on designer drugs ("dopalacze") in Poland [171]

I think the mafia drug lords will be very pleased with this, they make their money from outlawed goods.
So instead of being regulated, taxed and not supporting gangsters, it will be pushed underground, where you are not being sold what you think you are, there are no regulations, no taxes and gangsters can buy more weapons. If I didn't know better, 'd think this is the gangster's lobbying for this.

UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

They aren't worth the risk to your health. You never know truly what you could be taking and the consequences could be fatal. (My professional head).

My normal head would say, its up to the individual if they want to take the risks.

This to me would seem more of a warning about the impurity of street drugs and lack of discussion/education about the various forms of drugs than anything else.

''Just saying no to drugs'', without any knowledge of what it means seems unrealistic to me. I would prefer to be informed about something and then make an informed decision rather than just blindly having someone else's opinion.

OF COURSE!

Ah, I never knew.

If anything, Khat's a mild stimulant, but I agree it wouldn't be great for an army; you have to chew it for a hell of a long time to get much effect. Ephedrine (legal in Norway, by the way) would be a better choice.

Funnily enough, Norway banned redbull because of the Taurine.

you would know if you had a proper E

MDMA has nothing to do with the XTC sold on the street, unfortunately.

They put Strychnine in to XTC, that's why people's jaws hang out, it's feckin toxic stuff.

Edit*

I was wrong.

Strychnine :Anti-drug educators frequently tell their students some variant on the theme of inevitable strychnine poisoning Urban legends about illegal drugs

Khat

Khat's a sedative or mild drug, no?, i don't think it would be good for armies, PCP (angel dust) on the other hand... make a guy run through a brick wall.

Not true, not true. We in łódź have really strong rave scene but in the years 1995-2005

Okay, I did know it was popular here, like in Ireland.
Did people take ecstasy when you went?

Ecstacy pills form the 90's,

That's a point, I don't think Poland went through the rave scene like we did.

In Dublin, it went from everyone locked on flaggins of cider knocking the heads off each other to raves and everyone dancing and hugs
