Travel / Travel Within Poland - from Warsaw airport to Mragowo [49]

Why didn't one of the ' regulars' suggest Polskibus

Why not ask them. There have been several suggestions, including some good ones, and some very sound advice from people who know (rather than claim to be sitting next to someone). A long coach journey from Warsaw to Mazury isn't among them.

All I see here is a troll trying to pick an argument with his betters.

As a final it would be a shame for the OP not to see many of the sights/attractions in Mazury,

I'm sure he and his family will see plenty in and around Mragowo and have a great holiday (he's chosen a nice hotel, certainly), 'countingeagles', whatever his choice of transport. He's asked for information, and received it, by and large from people, regular posters rather than 'guest posters', Europeans who have lived in PL for a long time and who know that area very well.

you are not taking the risk of control, age will do that to you

If that made sense...

The advice from several posters that he uses the train etc, is good advice.

feather boa...

?

New 7 World Natural Wonder ranked,

There was actually a huge online campaign in PL to get it in that (voluntary) ranking. You knew that...

have driven over 150,000 Klm on Polish roads

I've driven probably far more over the decades - and I dislike driving, especially in Poland. With good reason. Remember some of us "foreign people" have lived in PL far longer than some people who were born and bred there. And certainly driven far more and for far longer.

There is a reason people - not just "foreign people" - avoid driving in certain places at the weekend (the roads from Warsaw to Mazury being high on the list).

And yes, Poland does have very poor driving standards - this is a matter of official record, with one of the highest recorded accident levels in Europe.

so according to you

Others actually suggested that. I gave him a link to a car hire site. Nice try 'countingcrows'...

and not see some of the best scenery in Europe

You think the the bus has blacked out windows? It's pleasant scenery, though not particularly among the best in Europe..

most unsafest

The risk of having a road accident in Poland is far higher than being caught up in an incident in London.

Looks like you're trying to pick an argument, 'countingcrows'...

road works

No reason to say:

whatever you do do not drop off in Nidzica

In fact Nidzica is ok - I was at the castle too recently. Worth a visit, though not necessarily a detour.

the standard of driving

Driving standards are among the worst in Europe. As shown by the exceptionally high number of road fatalities and other accidents in Poland.

On holiday, it makes sense to avoid stress and sit back and let others drive. Especially if you come from somewhere like Germany with a high quality road system and high standards of driving. The contrast btween that and driving in Mazury during the weekend is just a hassle.

car transport is one of the main forms of transport in Poland

What a surprise.

whatever you do do not drop off in Nidzica

A nice if ordinary little place to stop off - There's a pleasant cafe in the centre.

Law / My Poland born father served in a foreign army - Polish citizenship questions [76]

unable to apply for citizenship through naturalisation or through the Presidential route suggests problems in that respect

Neither of these are difficult for the many people who fit the straightforward criteria. Basically, you can get it quite easily, if not through one method, then through the other. Permanent residence isn't hard for Americans to get either.

If he doesn't fit that criteria, it begs the question why he wants it in the first place - another passport to which he isn't entitled? They still swipe the same passport going into PL, and if there are any issues with the state, his other American one won't help at all.

Either way, one would be well advised to not take advice from guest posters

Very much so.

Which restaurants in Mragowo do you recommend?

Ratuszowa is good, as is Stara Chata (very traditional). Neither are very near your hotel, however if you go out in the evening, they're both central.

What bus stop should we get off at? Are there several in Mragowo?

The buses all go to the bus station. As I mentioned, it's on the other side of the lake to the Mercure (which is a little off the beaten track), and you'll need to get a cab. They don't cost much at all.

News / Polish man burns his head after mistaking iron for phone [11]

This stuff is too stupid to make up!

It's on a par with the woman from PL who went on holiday with her teenage daughter, the daughter came back pregnant and she tried to sue the holiday company, since she blamed the pregnancy on gobbets of jism floating in the hotel pool!

News / Poland's Public TV News Propaganda "Wiadomości" hated by viewers [31]

yet more crude propaganda designed to somehow stir up anti-EU sentiment where none exists.

Yes, that and to further JK's darker, more authoritarian agenda. Basically by whipping up hatred where none existed.

It was unashamed anti PiS propaganda for 8 years before.

No it wasn't. It actually used to have some standards.

Did you watch it often, being in a different country?

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

Good. It should become a blanket ban on Polish wood until the law is complied with.

Given the volume coming out of Bialowieza, it may as well be.

Now I just need to figure out which bus stop in Mragowo to get off at for Hotel Mercure Mragowo.

The Hotel Mercure is on the 'other' side of Mragowo. You'll probably need a taxi (should be a taxi rank by the bus station). Due to the hotel's location, you'll probably use taxis a few times during your visit - they aren't expensive.

You'll be pleasantly surprised at some of the restaurants in Mragowo. Don't just eat at the hotel (which will be more expensive than most places). there are some nice places to eat there, by the lake, and around town.

Polonia / Reckless Polish Man starts wildfire in Montenegro [48]

It was a serious fire that they struggled to contain, and which threatened the coast.

I wonder if there's something yet to emerge. Hard to believe that someone from PL would think that starting a fire in a forest in summer would be a good way to signal his location.

Starts at 7 zl, and the dearest was 64 zl. Most around 7 zl. (According to the link to e-podroznik posted last night).

The longer you leave it, the dearer it can get. On a Sunday, I'd say it would tend towards the dearer price if the time of the bus is popular. That's still nly 15 quid, and in reality the price will probably be half that at the most.

Flights and trains are rarely delayed in Poland.

That's fortunate. The report linked to above was concerned it could spread to nearby towns. Doubtless the firefighters are doing their best.

Presumably there'll be a prosecution over this.

Which is why he should have known not to start one - he was actually within sight of the town.

The locals know not to do it, and a holidaymaker from Poland (where forest fire issues are drummed into people from a young age) should also have known better.

Off-Topic / Help my Cygan Warszawski series take off [4]

I saw your videos - they're good. The man in the 'cygan' ones is sometimes called 'Czarny Roman' by students and hipsters (they photograph him for projects), and something else by townies like me. He has quite a sad history. There are a lot of legends that have sprung up around him, most of them nonsense - the reality is still that he had a tragedy in his life.

He just walks and walks, tracing a route around the town. Sometimes he stops in fromt of people he recognises and gives a spiel about the dead rising from Wilanow Cemetary.

The authorities do monitor him, and provide some support.
