Life / Fashion and Style in Poland [174]

does anyone think those Polish street fashion pics are really fashionable?

no - they look cool and vaguely hip, but I don't think that I could describe them as iconic or "out there".

I may not be American, but even I know that the fashion capital of the USA is New York.

Exactly....New York fashion week is a global event. Sure, some styles hail from the the west coast (bubblegum pink velour tracksuit with writing on the arse, anyone?), but I'd not say that california was the mecca for high fashion.

If you want to see London street style, check out Shoreditch/Hoxton on a Friday/Saturday night.

Seconded.... very much my stomping ground :)

I posted a link to some Polish street fashion earlier in this thread. By street fashion I mean regular people out walking the streets, not dressed to impress out on a weekend night ;-)

The style in ShoHo is very edgy and street... the kids still dress to impress, but in a different way - no suits or LBDs (little black dresses). I can't even begin to describe the look... mainly lots of art students in E1 / N1 which I guess influences things. Also a bit of a burlesque / fettish element too.

tis classic, but only works on handbags and on jackets no longer than 3/4 length.

Nah, in fact I fancy getting some houndstooth trews :)

why do so many people in London wear black, gray, and brown, mostly Primark or Peacock fashion?

Because they're sheep... baaaa baaaa... seriously though, I think that many of the people that you see in the West End / Oxford Street are from out of towm.

Also, if you go into the city (financial district, so EC1 - EC4) midweek, it'll be a sea of sober suits and TM Lewin / Thomas Pink shirts. Clones rather than clowns LOL!

Ugg boots in summer

because they're worn on the beach in Australia (where the trend originated).

why the ballet flats anyway?

I know, I know... plus unless you want to look like everyone else and wear them with leggings (sooo two years ago), there's not much that you can wear with them, plus they do nothing for my legs.

The wrong clothes can be so ageing.

That's always the worry... I can see the look of terror in Mr LC's eyes as I get ready to go out wearing a Hallo Kitty dress and a faux fur coat... LOL!

Ive got my partner into pink, at first he thought it was a bit gay, but has now embraced it. Only tops though, not trousers. I am now trying to convince him of the merits of purple.

Good effort - and wise to avoid pink trousers... a bit Rod Hull methinks :)

hound's tooth can only be done for handbags, and fall jackets no lower than the waist.

Disagree... houndstooth is a classic

Polka dots... hmmm.... ubiquitous... this year's gypsy skirt or sequinned shurg (maaan, was that a bad look??). I was reading about Top Shop stuggling to sell some plain t-shirts, so they took them off the shelves, sent them to get polka dots screen-printed on, and they sold out within a day.

Londonchick..you should never tone down your style for anyone..be proud of who you are and how you look

Sound advice, and I don't disagree with it. Thing is, I'm 32... sometimes I feel a bit Whitney dressed as Britney LOL! At least I know that I can pull off certain flamboyant looks in London.

BTW, I have yet to see really interesting street fashion in London.

Fair point. I just tone it down a tad, so as not to embarrass my Polish mates who probably aren't used to my sartorial statements :)

Most of the time it's totally boring and slavishly copies any current trend, like the boho style that was all the rage two years ago (thankfully now in decline).

Hahahaha... yes, who could forget the ubiquitous gypsy skirt sweeping along the streets.... I once saw a really fat girl wearing a white one, and she looked like a walking cloud :D

I daresay most people couldn't care less what you're wearing.

What parts of London did you spend time in? Try Hoxton, Shoreditch... in fact anywhere in E1 - especially shopping at Spitalfields market and all the retro stores nearby, like Rokit and Laden Showrooms. Bethnal Green is becoming a popular trendy spot too (ooooh get me, sounding in with da kidz LOL!!). And then of course there's Camden.

This is a very interesting question... I am quite a flamboyant dresser... lots of faux fur, leopard print, Emilio Pucci print, platform boots, OTT make-up etc. in London (but not all at the same time, you understand LOL!!), but I do tend to tone things down a bit when I travel to Poland.

What would happen if, say I went out in Warsaw dressed a little more flamboyantly? Would I get "evils"? :D

What nationality are you? I'd suggest that you contact the embassy... though if your sister works with diplomats, maybe she would be able to help you?

UK, Ireland / A collection of noimmigration's threads or "STAY AWAY from BRITAIN" [978]

I know, I know... he's not blaming immigration, however he is jumping on the "we're all going to hell on a handcart" bangwaggon.

I've lived in the UK and I've lived overseas.... there are good and bad things about both. I bet the minute that Dasla moves to Poland (or wherever), he'll morph into a professional Brit LOL!

Work / Education in Poland - system and structure [118]

Anyone remember Going For Gold?

Yes... many happy memories of watching the cheesey waves and thumbs up in the opening credits before heading off to afternoon lectures.

Ho ho ho ho.... look what I just found:

youtube.com/watch?v=n0pvFulUd98

I once saw Henry Kelly in a bar, but I was out with two Aussies and an Indian... none of whom could understand why I was so excited.

UK, Ireland / Polish Festivals/Exhibitions/Events in UK [91]

OK. I will attend the PD Polish Festival for:

Me too - Thinking about the Positively event, I guess Earls Court (with the usual format - corportate stands, goodie bags etc) would be a rather stuffy format. but if it was a bit more fun... a bit like a mini Glasto, it would be worth checking out.

Anyone going to this? I'm still thinking about it....
