Language / Polish/Ukrainian words similarities [209]

It is interesting that also Polish and Ukrainian share set of words which are very similar to each other (I do not want to bet if they are borrowed) there is also lot of words which are more similar between Polish and Russian than between Polish and Ukrainian.

There is lot of striking similarities between Russian and Polish. For example:

English - Polish - Russian - Ukrainian

He - On - On - Vin
She - Ona - Ona - Vona
They - Oni - Oni - Vony
It - Ono - Ono - Vono
Where - Gdje - Gdje - De
River - Rzheka - Reka - Richka
Wife - Zhona - Zhena - Druzhyna,Zhinka

And many, many other. The reason why Ukrainians understand you better than Russians is because Ukrainians speak or understand Russian too.Plus borrowed words from Polish.Luckily for Ukrainians their language is language in between Polish and Russian.

Therefore they have less difficulty to practice both those languages. It is interesting that Ukrainian also have some word identical to Czech. For example: zvir (beast) richka (river) djakuju (thank you) and many other...

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

The Poles once beat the Turks out of Europe. What's left of this brave spirit today?

Poles of course fought bravely, but mostly it were Ukrainian cossacks who did most of work.

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

Poland produces something like 90% of domestic appliances, 75% percent of flat screens (regardless of brand) for the European market.

Those flat screens and appliances receive label ``made in Poland`` on them?Or what kind of label?

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

I wonder how polish economy could grow so fast (even in crisis time) while they have so many unemployed?
I thought that at unemployment rate 12-20% economy could only stagnate. There seems to be no sense to increase
salaries, unemployment will only depress salaries growth. No growth of salaries = no consumption growth = no economy
growth.Or it is growing just for account of the richest consumption? It seems strange to me...
Well, during 2003-2004 unemployment was constantly at 19-20%.In 2012 it didn`t went lower then 12.3%.And other years
also very high. How economy could grow under such conditions is mystery to me.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

The level of GDP per capita is nearest countries like: Greece, Italy, Slovenia. Other option doesn't exist.

More accurate indicator of living standards within country is purchasing power parity per capita (if calculated properly). It takes in account not only nominal GDP which is usually estimated in USD, but also cost of living.

Mesured by PPP Slavic and Eastern European countries follow like this:

Slovenia - 27,412
Greece - 26,948
Czech Republic 26,046
Portugal 25,385
Slovak Republic 24,022
Hungary 21,610
Poland 21,310
Russian Federation 21,248
Lithuania 20,374
Croatia 20,031
Latvia 17,692
Romania 15,163
Belarus 15,040
Bulgaria 14,603

UK, Ireland / How long will Poles use communism and ww2 as an excuse to move to the UK? [55]

Look at Russia! Incredibly rich in natural resources, yet soo soo poor.

Actually, average PPP in Russia looks quite prestine.According to World Bank estimates for
year 2011 it is basically the same as in Poland.
data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD?order=wbapi_data_value_2011+wbapi_data_value+wbapi_data_value-last&sort=asc
The problem of Russia is huge inequality in incomes between rich and poor and capital flight. So basically we could tell Russia is less
socialist country then Western countries and even Poland.Wild capitalism destroys Russia. Also there is huge inequality in incomes between people of different nationalities.

The pick of the bunch, in my opinion is the Czech Republic. I also noticed the people there are quite friendly and westernized for Slavic standards!

When I was back in Praga airport somebody stole my Ukrainian passport. After lot of nervous I found my passport in local administration. They throw my passport to me like a piece of dung! Some private Czech organization issued a rolic about treatment of Ukrainian housewifves workers by Czechs.

But personally my relation to Czechs is quite good.I believe that Czechia is interesting country.

And why does Ukraine have to join the EU for that to be OK??

Because to have right to work and live permanently in UK, you better need to have EU
citizenship. But this is just assumption.I`m not proposing to crowd UK with Ukrainians.
If you know some Poles, including your husband and some Ukrainians, what do you
think are differences and similarities between them, both in appearence and mentality?
Or maybe you heard something from other people?I`m curious to know about it from

Polish-English children rock, as far as I can see. They are bright, beautiful and strong. I have two of them. Good gene mix.

As I could understand you have a Polish husband? What do you think about English-Ukrainian gene mix?Do you think it would be as good? When Ukraine will join EU, would you welcome some marriages between Brits and Ukrainians?

Socialists think they can explain racial differences using social standing and economics

Well,according to wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism

Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy,[1] and a political philosophy advocating such a system. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, or citizen ownership of equity.

Socialism is purely economic teaching and have no any primary relation to race or anthropology viewpoints...

There is only one race. The human race.

Does that mean that policy of ``positive discrimination`` which
exist in many developed countries should be cancelled too? Since there
is no races it has no any sense?
As well as lawsuits regarding racism accusations? If some people making
racist remarks they are just saying nonsense and should be just not paying
attention to?

This is how the US gets the best human capital. Do we see Russia going out of her way to recruit outstanding students from other countries? No we don't, and that is why the US always wins the race to attract quality immigrants, and that is why they are always on top.

Why not to compare US to Japan or South Korea who have no permanent immigrants at all?Do they loose economic and escpecially manufacturing race to US?

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

have done in the Souther Poland during the war...

Sorry, ``Southern Poland`` is it where?..

I really don't like the rise of the fascist right winged basterds in the Ukrainians...

There is apparently some share of Ukrainians who belong to ultraright, for example there is ``Svoboda``
party in Ukrainian parliament who according to claims of some Jewish organisation is ``anti-semitic``
but I`m affraid to disappoint you. They do not regard Poles in particular as their enemies.Even contra,
many of them are ``pro-Western`` and regard Poles as their allies. So why would they appologies before
you if they believe you are their friends and you suppose to like them for their anti-Russian/communist
rethorics? But those Ukrainian far-right have little in common with rest of Ukrainians,so maybe you will
deal with your potential friends in some inter-family manner???

In 1998, the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior estimated that 400,000 Ukrainian women were trafficked during the previous decade; other sources, such as non-governmental organizations, thought the number was higher.

uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/natasha.htm

It is also estimated that 1/3 of all trafficked Ukrainians have been sliced for human organs...

To sofijufka:

Do you know Russian or trying to study it?
If you need some help with Russian or Ukrainian or have some

Also I may propose to you such movies as ``9 lives of Nestor Makhno``

It contains 12 series but is worth to see for those who is really interesting
in Ukrainian and Russian history.
And ``Tzar`` about life of Ivan the Terrible.

Warning: both movies contain scenes of atrocities.Movies are in Russian only.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

Where did you actually took from those numbers??? For example this movie which presumably was made in Russia in recent years
``Banderovtsi - the war without rules`` mentions number of Soviet soldiers who died in war with UPA at 50.000 tall.
...(The movie is in Russian only).
Also they state total number of civilians dead at 60.000. But under civilians they mean mostly Ukrainians who according to UPA simpathized to Soviets. In entire movie there was no even mention of Polish victims.Neither any known Ukrainian historian agrees with huge number of Polish victims. It seems only person who somehow concerned to Polish government and not completely private researcher is Ewa Siemaszko.I think those numberse you provided is mostly due to her researches. But she seem to start her researches many decades after alleged events and I wonder how this poor woman without extensive help could collect data for entire Western Ukraine! Some Ukrainian historians who decided to check her research and conduct their own research desagree with her statement and believe they were highly exagerated.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewa_Siemaszko (responses).

It seems that most of Russian and Ukrainian sources decided to build evil wall of silence about Polish victims.
And if we take in account that UPA also fought with Germans and presumably killed people of other nationalities then what is total number of those who killed by UPA both in combat and civilians? Closer to 300.000 at least???

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

There are other ways to control a people or country then invading it. Russia has shown that doing business with it and politics are co existent. Poland had an issue with Russia, it cut off import of meats. The Ukraine had an issue it turned the knob on the gas pipeline.

Well, if Poland believes it needs politically counterweight Russia so much, maybe they would thought some type of political confederacy with Ukraine? Western Ukrainians would gladly support idea,I guess, do not know about rest of Ukraine but still likely.38 mln + 45 mln = 83 mln. And plenty of territory and resources.Ukraine have Uranium,Thorium,Magnesium, plenty of fertile soil and Black see. Lot of potential to develop. For some period of type Ukraine may accept most of executive government functions from Poland befere their own political system will mature.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

Polish has a very unique sound amongst the family of slavic languages.

I do not deny that Polish pronounciation is quite different from Russian but there is limited
amount of characters in Latin alphabet to transmit all those differences.Nenethless most of those words
that I provided as examples sound quite similar to Russian as for me.

Just checked it and writing in English Polish "you" (plural) sounds "vi" while Russian something like "vwi"

While I find that Polish voice in google translator is quite good, the Russian is awful and I do not advise to use it as

a refference.Russian ``wy`` doesn`t suppose sound like ``vwi``, the only difference that in Polish sond ``w`` is a bit harder,
while in Russian it is much softer.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

To Tommy G.:
Because Polish is not your native language, I advise you to listen how it sounds, not only how it`s writen.
Polish ``niebo`` sounds rather like ``n`ebo`` (similar to Russian) not ``niebo``.
Polish Wy sounds exactly the same as in Russian and Polish ``Dzien`` like ``d`en`` (like in Russian).
What you are taking about is probably some elusive difference in pronounciation that I not even capable to
remark.

...and much more, just picked few random ones

Instead of peaking a random could you explain what`s wrong with at least one of them?Well, I heard Polish lang many times including

movies, google translator and in person and would not make some completely wrong statements on this account.

People - Ljude, narod - Ljudi, narod ( ludzie)
Spirit - Dukh - Dukh (duch)
Ear - Ukho - Ukho (ucho)
Neck - Shija - Sheja (szyja)
Day - Den` - Den` (dzień)
Snow - Sneg - Sneg (śnieg)
Sword - Mech - Mech (miecz)
Warmth - Teplo - Teplo (ciepło)
Divide - Delit` - Delit` (dzielić)
Wild - Diki - Dikij (dziki)
See - Videt` - Videt` ( widzieć)

Those are they writen in Polish alphabet. But to make comparison easier I converted them into ``uneversal transcription`` as well as Russian, otherwize I would be enforced to convert Russian words into Polish alphabet and transcription rules what whould be very difficult to me.Of course I was not able to depict some slightest, almost elusive details in pronounciation which cannot be depicted by any trancription.

I used google translator and checked how some Polish words sound.I didn`t use Polish alphabet to write Polish words but rather ``universal transcription`` to depict Slavic sounds in Latin letters.I guess it`s not very difficult to understand how to read it.

If you believe that I made mistake in how some words sound could you give few examples? My hearing is OK and I`m sure I could understand how some word sounds.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

Quite possibly, but those ethnicities were not mentioned in the genetical evaluation that I provided link to.
Probably due to insignificant size of those nations. But still not a fact.Lithuanian language is not even a Slavic language
while Polish and Russian do.Why genetics should be more similar between Poles and Lithuanians than between Poles
and Russians?Baltic and Slavic tribes separated from each other much earlier than Western Slavic and Eastern Slavic.

Well, if we take very basic vocabulary (this is still far from complete)...
English - Polish - Russian
I - Ja - Ja
You - Ty - Ty
You (plural) - Vy - Vy
We - My - My
He - On - On
She - Ona - Ona
They - One - Oni
It - Ono - Ono
Them - Im, Ich - Im, Ich
Me - Mnje - Mnje
Who - Kto - Kto
What - Co - Chto

People just don't trust their government

A group of Russians nearby looked angrily at the Ukrainians and ever more angrily at the Poles

Were those people from Russian government? And doesn`t it seem to you that there exist principal difference between
hypothetical and real threat from Russia to Poland?Do you seriously believe that modern Russia somehow threat to Poland at the moment or will threat in any foreseeable future? For example demographically or military? And why do you think that Russian government (Russian oligarchs) will somehow affraid of Lech Walesa? They just have property on all the Western countries and Poland included. What do you think Poles suppose to do to prevent ``evil intentions`` of Russian government?

Maybe we will try to bring as many ethnicities as close as possible?Instead of provoking some meaningless rivalry?

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

What is relation of Poles toward Belorussians?Could you remember or invent any grievance toward them too?!
What is relation of majority of Poles toward Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol? For example some his remarks about Poles:

``On the frontier road the Poles had gathered at a tavern and feasted there for two days. There were not a few of the rabble. They had doubtless met for some raid: some had musketes; there was jingling of spurs and clanking of swords. The nobles made merry and boasted; they talked of their marvellous deeds; they mocked at the Orthodox Christians, calling the Ukrainian people their serfs, and insolently twirled their moustaches and sprawled on the benches.!``

``The boat reached the bank; out of it stepped the witcher. He was in no happy mood: bitter to him was the funeral feast which the Cossacks had kept over their slain master. Heavily had the Poles paid for it: forty-four of them in all their harness and thirty-three servants were hacked to pieces, while the others were captured with their horses to be sold to the Tartars.``

``In a deep underground cellar at Danilo`s the sorcerer lay bound in iron chains ... while his devilish castle above the Dnieper was on fire... It was not for sorcery, it was not for ungodly deeds that the sorcerer lay in the underground cellar - for his wickedness God was his judge; it was for secret treachery that he was imprisoned, for plotting with the foes of Orthodox Russia to sell to Catholics the Ukrainian people and burn Christian churches....``
