Real Estate / What do you pay in rent/mortgage in Poland? [144]

I know a young family who are being evicted by the bank because the owner didn't have a 'buy to let' mortgage. They have been given 1 months notice.

Not at all true. This only applies if the landlord will register you at his address.. I was fleeced by an ex landlord in Poland who wouldn't have had a leg to stand on in the UK. In the UK there is also deposit protection and it's incredably hard to remove bad tenents without going through the courts.

News / Will EURO 2012 be a proud moment for Poland and its people or set back Poland 20 years? [86]

Some black eyes and a few chairs thrown but not too bad, unless I'm missing some news articles

Poland will benefit from a few extra KM's of motorway, bad press relating to football violence and racism has ultimately harmed it's external image around the world. The stadiums will lie like white elephants as the ekstraklasse wont pull in the crowds like other european leagues.....

How many arrests in Warsaw? The next time the Russians are in Warsaw there will be twice as many!!!

As well you seem to forget that there have been 6 football related deaths in Poland in the last 8 months. Ok the Irish have been well behaved but other teams fans haven't been so..look at Croatia.

News / Polish baby boom, but not in Poland [40]

Quite a niave thing to say considering that Spanish is the third biggest taught language in the UK after French and German, Of course foreigners stick together wherever they are look at the Poles in the UK. The Brits are about as insular in Spain as the Poles in the US or the UK (how many Poles in Norfolk! and London?). Unlike the Polish language English is an international language with over 50% of the EU speaking it to some form or another so Brits don't have to learn a second language as much as the Poles. The people on the program probably spoke enough Spanish to get by. Also Brits look more insular because they run business and work on the costa's where other English go for holidays simple as.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

That's a curious definition of legal tender. I'd be interested in a source for your claim that the Post Office and banks are obliged to take your coins.

Take your change, they'll supply the bags and take it of your hand. You don't even need full bags.

News / Will EURO 2012 be a proud moment for Poland and its people or set back Poland 20 years? [86]

I've lived in Poland for nearly 3 years and have been telling people in the UK this for ages but nobody want's to come. People just have a mindset of a communist country which can't be changed.

The fun they've had may partly be because of the football not totaly to do with Poland. And this may change on a second visit. Poland has an image problem which wont being addressed by a football tournament infact to anybody not coming here for the football. Poland's external image has been tainted by what the press around the world have been showing (head on train crashes, racism, hooligans etc)

And yes, the banks will tell you to get lost if you turn up with odd amounts.

Legel Tender - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_tender - Coins and notes are usually defined as legal tender... of course you would only need tender to settle debts...legal of course!!! But then again you can also save 'legal tender' in banks etc in order to settle debts in the future.

After living and working in the UK for how long do you know this? I lived in the UK for over 40 years and never once had a problem with a bank or the post office accepting change. Of course they prefer it to be bagged and will happily give you bags to put the change into. I can't imangine a bank turning down any deposit these days.

Not always the case. Alot of Brits in Spain either had money to live off or went to open/run businesses for the Tourists.

Is that Net migration? Probably not. You'll probably find that 400k probably come back the other way. Look at the British in Spain at the moment. Besides that British emigrants tend to do more skilled jobs then working on tables or cleaning hotel rooms or picking potatoes.

Easily. The UK was a great example of this during the good times

When was the last time the UK had mass emmigration? Probably moving to the empire to work for the british government.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - the next generation [87]

They dont scan the passports of anyone who enters the country. Non EU citizens who wish to stay for longer than 90 days must register with the GNIB at Burgh Quay. Not at the airport

I presume the airlines who take Poles to Ireland don't scan the passports on checkin? I suppose Ryanair, Wizzair etc don't as for passport and visa details?. I'm not american but i know first hand how airlines work and the government who are furnished with Passport and Visa details.

"Some" Poles may be leaving the UK and Ireland, but they are not necessarily returning to Poland.

Me and my previous girlfriend in the UK lived together for 6 years and had medium income. We lived in a cheaper part of the UK then London and probably brought in the same if not more then the translator woman. She must be coining-in the benefits to be able to buy a house and bring up a child in London.

Food / Your favourite Polish foods! [180]

but British food? Not a fan of it, it is very bland

What a joke....British food bland! a nation that invented the Curry, great lamb and wonderful beef...this from a Pole! a nation of boiled everything and centuries old pesant food!!!!!

cabbage, beetroot, little potatoes and awful pork. Apparently the UK has tighter controls on the rearing of Pork now and the farmer sold all their machinery to the Poles who will east anything...the meat hear is horrendous!

Flaki soup is the only thing i would take from Poland.... says it all!

Bargain... better to take it to the bank or use it in ticket machines. It's a win/win situation for the supermarkets because they earn 6% (less any costs/overheads) and they get change for the tills for free. (iom sure the banks charge for change)

You'll find that the UK and the Irish government share border information.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

Had a problem last week. Scratched my polish credit card so had to go to the bank to get a replacement. I had no photo ID which they asked for to issue a new one (tried to explain that all people in Poland don't carry id cards as Brits dont have them) the bank manager couldn't understand. And although i accessed my account on my android and showed him and even called citi bank on the phone and cleared security he still wouldn't give me the new card. Eventually, in order to get home i transferred money from my account to the managers account which he gave to me.

Poland at times it does my head in... they have no common sense!

They need common sense!!!!

what great effort do you speak of? it's a machine the size of a washer machine, it gets set in the corner of the store, you dump your change in, take the receipt to customer service, and you get your cash. who's breaking a sweat with that?

Dont those machines take a percentage for the trouble?

Also worth pointing out that Advance Passenger Information is not required when travelling from the UK to Ireland.

Never. I'm glad you pointed that out. Find me a carrier's website between Northern island and the UK where they say that non irish and british citizens don't need id?
