UK, Ireland / Memorial garden in London and Douglas Scotland [11]

s. A lot of them are in a state of disrepair though hold significant stories about the struggles the 2 peoples fought against.

Whatever you do don't let the Poles restore it - the army will raze it to the ground for being an illegal erection.

News / Should countries be boycotted for offending Poles? [60]

Some of those companies aren't dutch or at least floated, so I'm guessing its the country of manufacture that has highlighted these brands.

Given the working class migrants from Poland to Holland will be employed by the companies in warehouses and transportation, it may cost Polish people their jobs in foreign lands making the situation worse. The correlation between racism and economic prosperity is clear cut in "the west".

Life / Polish Werewolves [30]

yes, I have seen a werewolf.

Well? Where?

Those old legends have an honest basis in the way people interpreted events

I once heard a story, recounted as true, about an Italian immigrant in America who claimed to be bewitched. He was put into an insane asylum and later it was found out that everyone from his region used that idiom to state they had fallen in love/ become infatuated with a young maiden. Poor guy.

Life / Polish Werewolves [30]

Lycanthropy has an allegoric harmony with puberty. The movie Ginger Snaps played with that idea very well - monthly cycles, cliques, ravenous (sexual) appetites, etc. So after the struggle with the pubescent stage, one becomes human.

Love / More loveless sex of Poles living in the regained lands [73]

Why can moderators say **** but I can't? **** that. What the ****.

Makes me wanna be a mod.

Political affiliations sounds like a tenuous conclusion, and anyone taking advice about sex from the pulpit deserves all that they don't get.
I found this a little interesting :
The study - by sexual science therapist Professor Zbigniew Izdebski, in Poland - says one in three men is now too frightened for sex.
"Men feel they are judged by their women, who have been educated by magazines and know exactly how long foreplay should last, when to check the moistness of their vagina, the hardness of their nipples and body colour," he explained

So it is possible that these right wing religious woman are eating the menu instead of the fruit.

News / Anti-Szymborska hate content on Polish websites [38]

There are plenty of those on here. The phenomenon is called Internet Deindividuation. Writing particularly vile and aggressive things online that they'd never say in real life.

Here's an informative/opinionated piece guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/jul/24/internet-anonymity-trolling-tim-adams

We rightly hear a great deal about the potential of social media and websites to spread individual freedom, as evidenced during the Arab spring and elsewhere. Less is written about their capacity to reinforce pack identities and mob rule, though clearly that is also part of that potential.

The big problem he finds running the blog is that his anonymous commenters get a kind of pack mentality. And the comments quickly become a one-note invective

Cab you imagine how different the site would be if the self proclaimed Lords of the Flies had to use their real names so employers, families, friends and neighbours could spot them.

Off-Topic / Book: Gogol's Taras Bulba [37]

I am unable to see why the inclusion of the article "the" before "Ukraine" is offensive in any w

It was short for 'the Ukraine peninsula', nowadays it is 'Ukraine's peninsula'. A country not simply a region.

Life / The major religion of Poland? [33]

Are you suggesting that there is a direct link between language used and religion in Poland? That by speaking Polish one erases their given religion.

Genealogy / What ethnicity would you say a person would be if someone came from kresy Poland [41]

Remember a surname (unless there's inbreeding) only comes from one side of a family

Or if you are is posh woman or jumped up as one of my female cousins who made her surname and her childrens double-barreled.

The question makes no sense by UK standards as ethnicity is self declared. Where one is born and where your parents are from are two factors, attributes such as first language and religion are also to be taken into account. If someone wanted to dial in their political persuasion, nothing can prevent an individual from doing so.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

100,000 at the most. Not that either way it means that Poland was an occupied country.

I can't find a stat. I know by '89 there was 40,000 Red soldiers left.

So you would consider that GDR was for all of its existence an occupied country? There were more than three times as many foreign troops there than in Poland.

It's not the number it was the efficiency of control I was pointing to and that they had a presence as part of a feedback system.

However my entire point on occupation is that the nation that controls the military is the occupier. Just rhetorically, as a percentage, how big was the Raj in India.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

There was a rolling army of at least 100,000 Soviets in Poland already, how could they invade when they invaded decades before and never left.

Intervention not invasion - The sheepdog barking at the wayward sheep, for the very reason that Poland was becoming out of step and were to be re-aligned due to the weakness of the current Polish leader, approved by the Kremlin, who was found wanting in dealing with the stirrings of the Solidarity movement - the rebellion to gain back civil liberties lost to the Block. It was marshall law that stopped the Kremlin supplanting the People Army. The Soviets got their way.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

Debatable.

Well give us some examples where the People's army were autonomous, as the only time I have heard of them doing anything was in '68 under Soviet orders.

How many nations in the world recognised it as a Soviet occupation? None.

Irrelevant. If a military is controlled by a foreign nation it is occupied territory. Does any nation bother to claim Wales is occupied because the Welsh guard are controlled by Whitehall?

News / Wisława Szymborska died. [30]

mhmmm mhmm - and this is profound? -

Poetry doesn't have to be profound. In this case just denial in an old coffin dodgers outlook(I don't necessarily mean WS). Rhyme or rhythm will not make it any more profound. Not sure if I have read anything really profound...perhaps Desiderata.

News / Wisława Szymborska died. [30]

the 'cat bit' has nothing profound in it for me - it's a just a plain simplistic unconstructive thought written in plain words

Does it not suggest the loneliness of the old Doris? Living in an empty apartment justifying her continuance for the sake of an animal as independent as a cat?

She may have been a closet Zen Buddhist by the sounds of it

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

We need to draw a line somewhere or should English people try to sue Italy for what the Romans did? or for what the Vikings (Denmark) did or for what the Normans (France) did when the British Isles were invaded - when do we draw a line and say lets get on with the future.

Or look more recently to leaving Africa and India. If Africa asked the queen for the diamonds back or India asked for their gold back, I'd have to laugh at their gall, as guilty as the old Empire is of flagrant theft. I guess American Jews aren't funding Israel as much as they used to. They're not able to fund the nuclear and chemical arms programs without external donations.

doesn't fall completely into the hands of foreign owners.

Why not? Just about every company that floats is to bring in more money. Absolutely nothing wrong with accepting foreign investment. The EU wouldn't be giving money for Poland's infrastructure without the need to keep the country ticking over to keep their investments viable.

News / Poland and the European Union Fund Allocations [59]

I believe it to be a fraction of all the benefits Poles in the UK get but this figure is not massive at all

20 million. If you want to look at them as a mass Poles in the UK contribute more than they take. Not by much, last year's figure was £5 billion since 2004. I wouldn't go by HudsonthewelshHick. The Welsh are far more costly to Britain, as a mass.
