Language / Looking for meaning of a phrase ("Yatz Gatz Spetagamie") [47]

My mother was so scared of Germans during the Cold War she made me start learning German at the age of 6 because

I was sorry to hear your story, Pawian. But such a background can never be a good motivation to learn a language. Have you succeeded to learn any German?

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

Google it yourself and start READING.

yes, I may post a lot of rubbish concerning early medieval history here and then ask you to google sources yourself.

Your lies on early medieval history are pathetic because you cannot give any single source to back your silly assumpsions up.

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

That's interesting, but can you indicate your source, namely a source which explicitly connects the names Lech and Czech to the name 'White Croat'?

white Croats split off a family, namely of five brothers, Kloukas (Krakow) and Lobelos (Lublin) and Kosentzis (Kosice) and Mouchlo and Chrobatos, and sisters ...

That is even more interesting, but could you please give your source of this legend where those names of brothers and sisters are explicitly given and connects them to 'white Croat'?

received insults and abuse from decent Krakowians :)

"Decent" Cracovians of the time were best portrayed in Gabriela Zapolska's masterpiece "Moralność pani Dulskiej".

Frenzy of Exultations

The painting caused a big scandal in Kraków of the time ... today its copy is on display in the living room of the Kiepscy family's flat.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

especially jarring was that the voicing was as in in English [pg] and not [bg] which would be expected...

I'm not sure what you wanted to tell by this, but I deliberatery wrote:

'abgrejdować' (from the English verb: 'upgrade')

I cannot now precisely recall whether I did pronounce p (voiceless) or b (voiced), but I tend to think it is more natural to pronounce a slightly voiced b in this position in Polish rather than an English-style voiceless p.

A similar problem I once encountered about voiced/voiceless pronounciation was with the phrase 'most Kierbedzia'. As this bridge in Warsaw isn't known by this name any more, it is difficult to tell now how people would pronounce it. My grandpa who still used that pre-war name after 1945 pronounced the name 'Kierbedź' with p rather than b.

kier

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

It's because English is the mother of all languages.

Tbh, English is the daughter of some form of Saxon and some form of French (Norman).

Dobry dizajn... (Good design)

The only anglicism I use (never heard anyone else using it) is 'abgrejdować' (from the English verb: 'upgrade').

The spelling 'mejl' along with 'mail' has been officially allowed into use by the Council for the Polish Language.

Feedback / What makes an excellent forum? [119]

sometimes threads swerve after 50 postings but Rich and Dirk will normally bring up some alt right

This has become the most visible feature of the PF as of lately - every, virtually every thread is stolen away for a drift into a discussion about Muslim immigration and how to fight it. An obsession - clearly an unhealthy obsession of the worst kind bordering a serious mental illness - displayed by the usual suspects has made many of the old forum members leave. And when you add to the said obsession another one on gay people which is proudly presented by the very same suspects, you get the full picture.

I may understand Weimarer who limits his complains about immigration to the country of Germany as he lives there and Germany is naturally what matters to him the most. But I am unable to understand people who - living thousands of miles away from here - have chosen Poland as a center of their anti-immigration and anti-gay phobias. As someone living in Poland, I may only say that these two issues are of marginal interest among the majority of people living here. Except for a handful of right-wing extremists nobody in Poland is moving around Polish towns and countryside occupying themselves with incessant thoughts on gay marriage and Muslim immigration to Europe.

Just because a poster on here sees things differently from you does not make him/her a troll, liar,Russian or anything else

But RM being a genuine Russian troll is a notable exception to this theory ...

I want to thank the Almighty and the PF owners for this forum the way it is and not like those described in Post 1

I am seldom in agreement with RM, but this time I think he is right. Just because one guy recklessly told Paulina that she is supposed to be:

Paulina is splitting hairs and then goes on to accusing the PF of being the most evil of all the forums in the world. Pathetic!

Please believe me, dear Paula, that Johnny Reb is an expert on forums like these and always knows how people should behave in them.

Work / Business in Poland - should I expect some dirty tricks? [26]

a lot of problems (specially corruption problems)

The level of corruption in Poland is much lower than in Ukraine or Georgia, but that doesn't mean it is a non-existent phenomenon. The greater problem would certainly be beaurocracy, in my view (possibly less pronounced than in Ukraine).

Law / UK Citizen - Detox Centre Fine from Poland [26]

and brought money with me to pay the fine, I don't know why they wouldn't take it then.

They routinely take it paid to the bank account, I think. Once I was fined 20 zl for crossing the road at an unauthorized place, so I wanted to pay on spot, but they refused to take the money.

He was given 14 days to pay the fine, them 14 days ran over yesterday.

Being late a few days shouldn't be a problem at all.

Language / What do foreigners find the hardest part of Polish? [63]

Or ć(ś or si)?

Idźcie (spelled the way as you can see it, but pronounced 'ićće').

Or dż(rz or ż)

Dżdżownica. Dżdżu (genetive of 'deżdż', the archaic form of 'deszcz')

Or dź(ź or zi)?

Does 'źdźbło' fit into your question?

Some other words that contain a surplus of bizzare consonants in them: zrzeszenie, zrzeszotnienie, przerzedzony, paździerz, zdziecińniały.

the alphabet pronunciation especially the two letters alphabet

It's not unique to Polish. You have, for example, the 'ch' or the 'sh' in English. In German, you have three letters for writing down a single sound as in 'sch'.

Everywhere in Tri-City. For my Norwegian friends, apparently.

If you both say so, I must believe it. :) [...] it means I must visit an opthalmologist.

No, you don't have to. This is only Doug's propaganda cleverly hidden behind his Norwegian friends. These days, you have to actively search for such shops (at least in Warsaw) if you want to visit one, whereas in the 1990's and later they were practically everywhere. Nowadays, I am always really surprised when I bump into one.

That is a fair point. Soviets are in charge. THAT needs to change.

"Soviets", as you call them in your somewhat old-fashioned PRL-style rhetoric, never advertised them.

News / What should Poland do to solve the population crisis? [101]

Your flippancy as to grand old "history" is quite pathetic.

for its size in area the Polish population should be 45 million plus.

In fact it is you who are flippant with your claim that Poland's population should be 45 million plus. There is no ground whatsoever for such a pathetic claim.

Could any "serious" institution or office predict in 1938 that Poland's population would be reduced to slighly below 24 million in 1945? The answer is "neither". What is even more to it is that their "serious" predictions would have inevitably gone in the opposite direction since Poland had started with 27 million in 1921, went up to 32 million and finished with nearly 35 million in 1938.

This is a serious topic. Poland is so poor because it is seriously underpopulated

Ha ha ha, a downhill descent from 35 million to 24 million in just seven years and then a sharp growth of its population thereafter! Likewise, all these silly predictions for the year 2050 are not even worth the value of paper on which they are written.

And next time, please stop being so pathetically patronising just because you are British and I am Polish. I think you have been reprimanded for this several times already, and by your British compatriots as well.
