Life / New to Warsaw - Looking for Gigs, Local Live Music, Festivals etc! [7]

Are there any cool less well-known places that have smaller gigs?

i can't help with venues, but you should find some mini festivals, one day events, around May 1st.

check: lastfm.

google for gigs in warsaw...most venues have a map link and you can check the bands at wikipedia.

check some of the music threads here for thoughts on Polish bands.

Life / Hey, Nice Airport Wrocław! Or! Day #1 for an American Ex-Pat in Poland. [128]

The house had been shot by several calibers of ammunition, and a long time ago, at that

quite a lot of that in wroclaw. some of it might add something/a talking point to a photograph.
some folk do try to document it.

btw. the fall of wroclaw was after that of berlin.

hoofed it 4.5 km to the IKEA in Bielany

a decent walk.
for the less fit, i think there is a special, free, bus that goes to bielany.

Life / Hey, Nice Airport Wrocław! Or! Day #1 for an American Ex-Pat in Poland. [128]

something most folk are unaware of.

the remains of the original castle/big house will be open to the public when the tourist season begins proper.

the building is on ostrow tumski and it was built by the czech guy who gave his name to the city.

i could waffle on a bit more about this, if need be.

Life / Hey, Nice Airport Wrocław! Or! Day #1 for an American Ex-Pat in Poland. [128]

for those who care.

the ticket prices in one of those links above are out of date.

adult single = 3zl

this one might seem odd. ..... when putting coins in the pavement/sidewalk ticket machines....... sometimes the coins need a little help... use a second coin to push in the first coin.

also, the coins don't go straight in.... they should be slotted in at a slight angle.

the machines give change, but they won't return/refund coins for any other reason.

Life / Can anyone in Wrocław recommend a place to get an eye exam and glasses? [3]

What's an average price for a decent exam

i think it's free in many places. frames cost from about 200/300zl up to whatever one can pay.

sometimes there are special offers 2 for 1 etc.

try vision express:...... 8 branches in wroclaw ... at the big shopping centres

News / Polish language diacritical marks at risk! [20]

The article speaks of it being inconvenient for people to write with the Polish diacritical marks via texting

i've just been chatting about this offline. in the early days of mobile phones one paid for the amount of space used. ą ć ę etc cost more to send than a c e

therefore once the culture of using english language characters set in it became too late to do anything about it.

however, one can argue that folks these days use smartphones (mini computers) so it shouldn't be a problem to set up for correct Polish language.

Genealogy / Are Polish birth records available on the Internet? [56]

go to your local Latter Day Saints family history centre to view (for free) their Polish microfilms of parish registers

they don't have all the registers. some government body put a stop to it some years ago.

History / The Humble Beginnings of Empik in Poland [14]

in the days when people actually bought cd's Empik was the first stop, but only to check the product. folks would usually go and buy somewhere else/cheaper.

they also have a problem with customers who think the shop is a library. i for one won't buy a well thumbed book/mag as new.

the shop's friendly policy is one of the things that is working against it. and there are plenty of cheaper shops.

Life / Men in Poland in the forest? Just men? [133]

I had also hoped that someone could come up with a sensible explanation about the guys squatting in circles and not all of them are drunk or drinking...just conversing,

in england, down the pits, the miners had a particular way of sitting during their breaks. in fact, they would squat.

Genealogy / Gracyasz - can't find anything on family name or history [12]

What we know is my Great Grandfather came over from Poland to the United States in 1902

do you have a copy of the ship's record.... it may show place/town of origin.... and possibly next of kin and their town/city

have you checked naturalization papers.

are you sure he came from Poland (according to documents) and not Prussia, Russia, Austria.

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

Poland looks like North Korea, Poland is like a lower version of East Germany .. I would compare Poland today to East Germany in the 90 s.

under normal circumstances i might suspend you for flaming, but it's obvious you are just a fool ... and i can't suspend you for that.

News / Poland is the source of horsemeat in burgers? [169]

. Silvercrest should be blamed , not us .

it depends who ordered (exactly) what and from who/m. added to this would be who supplied what and if it differed from what was ordered.
