Love / How to survive a relationship in Poland? [42]

The stereotype is that mothers have hard time letting go of their sons.

Many fathers have hard time letting go of their daughters. But they often dont admit it "officially".

Love / How to survive a relationship in Poland? [42]

The propaganda of skinny dystrophics as a symbol of a beautiful woman made the epidural indispensible. Kids used to fall out like apples in the Middle Ages, now we need 6 people to pull out a single treasure.

This is actually true. It is well known that very thin girls have more complicated deliveries. And a higher incidence of Caesarean sections.

why preservation of marriages often turn out to be a fight between being oneself and doormat, not a dialogue of 2 people, compromise?

If it is not possible to compromise, the relationship will end sooner or later (probably sooner). It does not matter what you do (doormat or not).

I still do not think that women want their men to be doormats. Maybe women want sensitive men, but not doormats. However I am not a women...

Does child-bearing justify women's pseudo-weakness which is often used in completely unrelated issues to the disadvantage of men?

Actually I have never heard a woman using child-breaing to "blackmail" her man.
However, there are probably other things women can use to blackmail men.

Do you think women want their men to be doormats?
Do you think women turn their men into doormats?

News / Military power (Poland #21 in the world) [97]

Oh dear, looks as though they are ready and willing.

"Tysiąclecie Państwa Polskiego" - It was pure propaganda. However, rather famous. Some streets have been named after this event.

Did you try to talk to your partner and explain, how you feel?

That is step 1 for sure. Or else it will not be better. But it is important to say it "in the right way". And not only present criticism.

Language / plural forms (cztery kubki / czternascie kubkow) [23]

I understand if this thread is a little confusing. But these rules are not so difficult if you just understand the principle.

I will try to summarize it quickly:

1-4 nominative
5 and above = genitive. But with the the exception:

Numbers above 19, ending with 2,3 or 4, require nominative.

(E.g.
Mam 23 lata (nominative). Because it ends with 3.
Mam 26 lat (genitive). Because it ends with 6.)

Also note that all numbers ending in 0 (zero) require genitive.

This is probably all you need to know about this thing.

Not quite. Numbers above 19, ending with 2,3 or 4 require nominative. Numbers above 19, ending with 1 require genitve,

Yes, it is true. I wrote it too fast.

I wrote ending with 1,2,3,4. But it should only be ending with 2,3,4, not 1.

Good that you saw it.

How's your Polish coming along SzwP? getting there?

It is going in the right direction. :)

I've been using Rosetta Stone.

By the way. How does Rosetta Stone teach people grammar?

I have noticed that many people using RS have poor grammar skills (when they try to construct their own sentences).

In English it is often possible to understand a sentence, even if the grammar is poor. In Polish it can be difficult to understand such a sentence. It is a big difference.

Love / Polish men are their own special breed ... [96]

Although I don't see the resemblance with Dolph.

That's because he's Swedish-American

Dolph Lundgren is actually 100% Swedish. And an intelligent Swede. Graduating from high school with straight-A grades. An then graduated with a master's degree in chemical engineering, finishing with the highest results in his class.

Life / Drinking before clubbing in Poland? [25]

Also is it polite?impolite?expected?norm? to offer vodka before heading out.

In Poland, people usually drink sth before going to the club.

Often at a small "before-party". Partly because it is much cheaper than bying alcohol in the club. And partly because it gets you "in the right mood for clubbing".

Ask the girls if they want to come for a little before-party, and drink a little vodka or a few beers.
If you dont like the idea with vodka, just get together, and take a beer before going to the club.

Life / Drinking before clubbing in Poland? [25]

My friend suggested "poł litra" before we start the night.

50 cl vodka for 4 persons is 12,5 cl per person. It is about 2 "typical european" beers (50 cl with 5-6% alc.)
It is not much if you drink it over 1-2 hours, not even for a girl.

If the two girls drink half a litre together

As I understand it, they are 4 persons sharing half a liter of vodka. It is not much.

However, 2 girls sharing 50 cl of vodka before going to club is probably not a good idea.

Language / GCSE Polish - the best way of learning the seven cases? [12]

Accusative
Fem: -ę
Masc: -y, -i (living: -a)
Neutr: -e

For many masc and neutr nouns, the accusative ending is the same as nominative. I should have added it. This is actually more common than what I wrote above. But the rest of the table should be easy to follow.

Language / GCSE Polish - the best way of learning the seven cases? [12]

Polish case endings for adjectives (Looks more complicated than it is)

And it is very important to learn which prepositionis associated with which case.
(for example; od, do, bez = genitive)

Oops, I get depressed when I look at this stuff. I will never be able to learn it. :(:(:(

So good for you that you already know Polish. ;) As with all languages, it is about understanding the structures and principles.

Language / Difference between "cię" and "się" [10]

się = myself, yourself, himself, herself... etc.

myję się = I wash myself
myjesz się = you wash yourself
ona myje się = she washes hersef

cię = you(in accusative and genitive cases) - means the same as ciebie.

Kocham cię = I love you
Ona lubi cię = She likes you

Do you understand the difference now?

It means 2 completely different things.

News / Sex is patriotic: Poland's birth rate rises [34]

if birthrates remain this low, the bloc will have a shortfall of 20 million workers by 2030."

It is a serious problem.

There are discussions in Sweden as well now; how to increase the birth rate.

It is quite a big problem in almost all European countries. However, many non-european immigrants tend to have more children.

The problem is the same all over Europe.

The economical equation will break within 20-30 years, if people do not start to make more children.
