Life / Your Polish friends - why do you regard them as such? [41]

DE, most Poles tend not to do coke. I think he was Americanised. Most tend to like beer, quite a few like vodka and some go in for amphetamines.

None of my friends do drugs but a few of them are keen on alcohol though not to any significant extent. This is more a response post but more posts from exp with friends will come tomorrow. Some Poles are often great people to hang out with.

News / Russia says: WE'LL NUKE POLAND [150]

Yeah, gotta hate those Western jerks. I dislike them too. Oh, I'm not pan-Slavic? I have different contacts in Slavic countries and Crow will attest to my views on the matter. Suffice to say that I don't condone any nuking by Russia.

Crow, I think part of the problem stems from Orthodox nations like Russia, Serbia and Greece overstating the point of what they are. I often read comments like 'screw those who are not Orthodox' from people from those nations. Why can you not just say you are Christians? It would save unnecessary division.

What is so great about being 'prawo sławny' anyway?

Where was Russia to stop the rape of Yugoslavia?

Life / Your Polish friends - why do you regard them as such? [41]

Thanks, war :) I hope to tease out positive vibes with this one. Those closest to me are absolute gems and I will show that progressively throughout the thread. Superb statement, war! I might continue 'my friend Roman, who happens to be Polish, ....'. I hope nobody snipes here as we are all humans at the end of the day. Let's see the positive side of folk here :)

Who next? Well, friend is not the best description but my parents in law are very dear to me indeed. My father in law did a sterling job of renovating the whole flat, repaired my binoculars and is very generous when pouring Soplica or Lubelska cytrynowa :) :) He is a truly dear man with a great heart! I can't help but look up to such a person. He is a jack of all trades, relaxed and open minded. May God protect him and keep him on the planet for a lot longer!

My mother in law is also a gem. She makes the best food and I know for sure that she'd help out if I needed anything. She is a great listener and very fair when it comes to things 'some' other Poles have a dig at, e.g Jews. She is always smiling and is highly perceptive. May God be with her and I'll be sure to help her out in any which way I can. Family is family!

Please please please, let nobody elaborate on that tangential Jewish reference. I will go nuts if so. Let's keep it all good!

Life / How to charge money to a phone in Poland? [6]

Dial *500 and then you get the Orange Customer Care Bureau. To recharge your account, press 1. Then enter the 14-digit code and press hash (#). There might be a 9 in there somewhere but just follow the instructions.

To check your credit, dial '*124*#' and it will tell you how much credit you have. It will also tell you, upon recharging, that your phone has been recharged. It sends you a message to that effect.

You can get 600 texts for 6PLN. Type 'GROSZ' to 767 and you will activate that deal. To check how many you have, type 'Ile' to 767 and it will tell you how many you have remaining.

The above is only available for Orange 'Pop' users, I think. You'd have to ask to confirm that.

Well, this should please some posters who only want to hear positive things about life here. It should also stop buffoons (you know who you are) who focus on 38 million people as one homogeneous group. I don't want to hear any comments about 'Poles' as a collective here. I want specific stories of your Polish friends and how they came to be your friend.

OK, I want launch in with all my stories/experiences at once so I'll start with my friend Daniel (Danny). I first met him in my first school here and I noticed straight away how light-hearted he was. He invited me to a football match and that started my short adventure of watching Piast Gliwice. He always offered to buy me sth to eat or drink before the match and went out of his way to pick me up. He was/is great company and introduced me to some Polish swear words. He threw them in a lighter way than some of the hardcore fans who didn't hold back. To this day, he has taken me to different locations to play football and has organised it all despite being a busy manager. He has also offered to help with DIY jobs and to pass on some of his music collection. I know he'd look out for me in hard situations and he really values closeness. Friends like him don't come along too often.

So, this is mainly for non-natives but native Poles, of course, are free to submit their stories of their friends and what makes them a person worth their weight in gold. It will hopefully encourage more positive posting and less generalising.

Come on, DE, step up to the plate. We are all ears! You can use all the nice adjectives you know to describe your friends.

News / Nigel Farage voice of reason for Poland and EU? [79]

It'd be interesting to hear his stance on Syria. He defended the need for a crackdown in England but now many powers are looking to overthrow their leader for doing the same as we did. What a bunch of hypocritical tossers in the West! I hope George Galloway or Nigel Farage kick up a big stink about it!

Very true, den. Business interests trump normal, interpersonal ones. You never quite know who your friend is in that case.

News / Nigel Farage voice of reason for Poland and EU? [79]

The call must be made, though. As a populist, he can create interest in the issue and appeal to the man on the street. Think about it, you vote a leader in what, once every 4 years? So why can't you likewise put big decisionS out to the people? Or do you blindly trust the leader to serve you without your input?

Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

How about in administrative offices? How do you feel as a Pole going in there? The reception is mixed but Poles often dread having to wait in queues for papers.

Throwing mud? It's not about throwing mud, it's about everyday reality not always being painted as paradise. I really can't get over the level of defensiveness here. It's on a different scale altogether.

Is it really hard to comment on the thread rather than pointing an accusatory finger at me?

It doesn't detract from the fact that referenda still have a role to play and ignoring them willy-nilly is a smack in the face to democracy. You are simply allowing a precious few individuals to shape reality for millions of individuals. If you call defending democracy one trick, God help you.

Borderline paranoid? Really? Why? Do you expect paradise on Earth here? Some form of utopia? This thread, if people started thinking broadly, would attract a lot of stories.

Emigration is your tag-on, DE. I don't want to put words in mouths like that. It's about dissatisfaction and complaining, sth the Poles self-admittedly claim to know a lot about. Before you start at me, many Scots are that way too. People are free to answer, 'no, they aren't' and give their stories, DE. The thread is open in that it touches on interaction, teamwork and getting things done. If you see it as being designed to attract hatred then you have missed the point completely.

It doesn't happen too often though, MW. Many Russians felt genuinely bad at the loss of LK. Just get the people together and you will see them get on.

I am far from being materialistic, DE. What fault do you find in this fact? It's not self righteous at all.

Oh, you are free to comment but based on what experience? You are having hacks at me yet you don't know the reality on the street here, do you?

If you think I dislike Poles then you are very wrong indeed. They treat me well

den_fcdk could join in this thread. He is a likeable Ukrainian from Kiev. A reasoned Ukrainian perspective is nice :)

Let's see if he supports your analysis, Crow. Let's invite him in.
