Language / Using the correct grammar is stopping me from progressing with Polish language [35]

you have to talk = and A LOT - forget about grammar for a while - you have to learn loving to talk Polish no matter how many mistakes you make - grammatical mistakes are not to be affraid so much - only make sure that you use the right tense with verbs - this is difficult enough in the beginning

Nope. Better get back to the bird concept. The cage is for a winged creature, indeed.

is this object a queen bee cage?

History / The Untold Battle of Britain [205]

Perhaps you should have read more than just the first record.

I have read a good couple of entries there and most state that the given pilot went through Poland, in cases there is no mention of Poland it doesn't mean that a given pilot hadn't been to Poland on his way to France - my statement was a bit of an exaggeration - however other ways were exceptional and Poland was the rule - there was an entire shipment of Czech air force members from Gdynia as one can figure from the entries on your site - Poland was a safe haven for Czech pilots however you want it the other way - from geographical point of view also Poland was the only gate to France or England at that time for stranded Czech pilots

History / The Untold Battle of Britain [205]

Got a source for that claim? .. seems to disagree with you.

Vaclav Brejcha was born in Zivotice, Czechoslovakia on 13th April 1915. He was in the Czech Air Force before the war and escaped to Poland after the Germans took over the country in March 1939. After Poland fell, he escaped to France, joining the Armee de l'Air and flying MB152 aircraft with GC III/10 and Curtiss Hawk 75's with GC I/4.

you should read your own sources Harry

Harry the thing is most of these Czech fliers went to Poland is because they had not had much choice - Poland was the only reasonably friendly neighbouring country these days

Evzen Cizek was born in Ostrava on December 10th 1904 and joined the Czech Air Force in the twenties. He went to Poland after the Germans moved in to Czechoslovakia in March 1939. Cizek was in the Czech Air Force in Poland but when that country fell in September 1939 he went to France. Commissioned in the Armee de l'Air, Cizek was in Groupe de Chasse III/3 in May 1940. He destroyed a Me109 on the 11th, shared in the destruction of Me109's on the 14th and 19th and on June 16th he destroyed one more.

it looks Harry like these guys haven't treated Poland as a hostile country and neither Poland treated them as enemies

You mean the joint Polish-Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Harry, why don;t you ask Czechs if they perceive Polish action as invasion or a hostile action - btw all Czech pilots went through Poland on their way to France and Britain not only Frantisek - Frantiśek just chose to remain in Poland and join the Polish military with a couple of his friends

Travel / Poznan bus & train stations [9]

I have found one direct connection between Poznań and Zgorzelec it departs from Poznań bus station at 13:15 and you arrive in Zgorzelec at 18:39 - the price is 61 PLN

there is no on-line booking as far as I can tell

there are couple train connections throughout the day too - you however need to change trains mostly in Wrocław

Re: Could anyone suggest most convenient way to get to Poznan from Opole ?

Hi there,Any body could suggest most convenient way to get to Poznan from Opole ?
train or bus ....Any input is highly appreciated !!

Train is probably the best way as a bus journey in Poland will be the closest thing to living hell you will experience. information is available in english at pkp.pl

Language / How many words does the Polish language have? [30]

I can give you one example of how valid Polish words can be created - krótki means short - you can create a multitude of diminutives of this word - like króciutki, króciuteńki, króciuśki, króciutenieczki - these are all seperate words in Polish but you won't find them in a dictionary

diminutives in Polish can be created from nouns, adjectives, adverbs and even verbs

Law / Poland KRS (Police Background Check) form / records [16]

Can I get this done from any city in Poland or do I have to go back to the city I resided in?

I think it is possible in any city where Sąd Wojewódzki or Okręgowy is

this site has addresses of where you can get the 'zaświadczanie o niekaralności' from - there is three such places in Warsaw - these are the "Punkt Informacyjny Krajowego Rejestru Karnego" - expect the typical Polish office hours:

UK, Ireland / And you wonder why there is Anti-Polish feeling in the UK [187]

For Chris R and all of the others on here who think that the press are anti-polish here is an article from todays Daily Mail. Maybe they shouldn't print this incase they upset the polish populous. Maybe the UK government should demad an apology from Poland for the actions of its citizens within the UK?

it's now wonder- among many other people Poland also exported it's criminals to Britain - after opening of the borders crime rate in Poland dropped by 20 per cent

Language / Questions about Jej vs. Swoje, ą and ę, and Latin similarities [27]

Yes, I didn't say the opposite. I just said that out of:

Jadę do mojej babci
and
Jadę do swojej babci

natives would choose the latter.

and I would choose the former heh ;)
both are perfectly fine though in this sentence

going back to the original sentences Kobieta i jej pies. vs Oni czytają swoje gazety. - it's just the way it is in Polish -

Kobieta and pies are not connected by some action, they are separate subjects (Kobieta i jej pies spacerują sobie - both kobieta and jej pies are subjects here)

situation becomes different when one is subject one is object of a sentence like in Oni czytają swoje gazety. Oni is a subject and gazety are an object of the sentence and thus they are swoje -

Kobieta spaceruje ze swoim psem. - here kobieta is subject pies is objectified (sort of)

Kobieta spaceruje z jej psem - means A woman walks another woman's dog, a woman who is shown with a finger for example or who is mentioned earlier in the context

Language / Czech language sounds like baby talk to most Poles. Similarities? [222]

The Czech word for szlafrok is... župan ;-p

Polish also had a word żupan - and it was also non-formal piece of garment resembling that of szlafrok - it was part of Polish gentry wardrobe - now the word is a song from the past just as is traditional nobleman's attire

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BBupan_%28ubranie%29

it looks like żupan was worn under kontusz

Language / Using Polish declensions.. [14]

Lyzko:
"Proszę bardzo"

almost casual

Proszę bardzo is a calque of German Bitte schoen - it is a polite answer to thank you or dziękuję and is not used when you actually ask for something contrary to bardzo proszę

History / In WW2 Poland who was eligible to sign the Volksliste ? [48]

Alex, Polish wikipedia entry states that many Poles of some German extraction from Wielkopolska (Poznań or Posen region) signed Volksliste to avoid being deported to General Gouvernment - this was viewed differently by different levels of German administration - local administration was actually happy to keep these people where they were and not allow them to be deported

News / What really happened at the Krakow restaurant? [53]

I don't get it - if Germans hold Poles for thieves (and they have reasons to think that way) is it racial prejudice - I thought Germans and Poles were the same race just different cultures

keep this on topic please

Harry, if you insist that any anti-Jewish sentiment is anti-semitism then any anti-Polish sentiment is antipolonism right?? - no matter the reason and the intensity

anti-semitism in my understanding is when you want to anihilate Jews or when you want to banish them from your country (including those rightful citizens of your country) - maybe your understanding is different

News / What really happened at the Krakow restaurant? [53]

there is an undercurrent anti-Jewish sentiment in Poland and you have seen an example in that situation - but calling it anti semitism is a gross exaggeration - it is really a reaction to various Jewish attitudes

News / What really happened at the Krakow restaurant? [53]

pip

I think the staff of the restaurant acted the way they acted because they were not really convinced calling Polish police to the scene would be of any help - but well it's my guess (a bit educated though)

News / What really happened at the Krakow restaurant? [53]

Magdalena's assessment is probably fairly accurate, however as I've said before there have been other incidents involving Krakow restaurants refusing to serve Jewish people.

maybe there is something wrong with some Jewish people attitudes - like in this particular case - I guess you wouldn;t particularly happy if people occupied your premises and demanded to be served when you are tired after a whole day of working - the Jewish people in question acted as if they were the owners of the place and not guests

is a customer right also when they abuse you in some way or another????
