News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

English will due in this life time.

There is a point here to be made about Poland only starting to catch up with today's international language i.e. English.
The lack of English speakers here has held Poland back.

I am not saying this because I am an English speaker (before anyone jumps on me).
English is, today, the business language of the world. (French was, Mandarin probably will be)

Come on Seanus, get them going :)

I do have mixed feelings about the global village homogenisation.

I'll change my gender for you ;-)

AH well in that case... That explains it! :p

They are held to the same labor constraints as local companies.

60% below the the guide price.
I think a bit of blind eye, human trafficking i.e. slavery is involved.

I have my beliefs that it is being done for a reason, maybe to remind European construction companies that they can't constantly fleece the state.

Why would China care about European construction companies "fleecing' European state?
Remember the "Guide price" is set by the state not the construction companies.

The Polish even admit in several articles that the Chinese must be paying very very little.

Guesswho, you're a bad bad man! :)

Just something I came across recently on this China/Poland/infrastructure issue

It is the first time the Chinese have won such a contract in Poland and it is believed to be a first within the EU.

But instead of just cutting the price, they slashed it to pieces, offering to build the road for 60% less than the guide price- saving taxpayers millions, but leaving many wondering how they can do it so cheaply without pain.

China's controversial Polish contract

At a dusty building site on the fringes of Warsaw, globalisation has just taken its latest twist - and it's one which will send tremors through Europe's construction industry.

Two decades after the fall of communist rule, a Polish government with an almost fundamentalist commitment to the free market has awarded contracts for two large motorway sections to a Chinese state-owned company that won the job with a dramatic knock-down bid.

It must be added that the majority of contracts have gone to European companies.

I found what I was looking for:

And remember this is not about the standard of third level education but just about the amounts of people with a third level education in Poland and China:

China: In 2002, Total graduate student enrolment was 501,000.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education_in_China#Present_day

Poland: As of 2001 there were 1,224,600 students[1] enrolled in the publicly funded universities and colleges. In the private universities and colleges there were 519,100 students. Total = 1743700 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education_in_Poland#The_present_time

Is that not a general fear for all EU countries, that they will be undermined and coerced by the world of powerful undemocratic governments.

What are you talking about?

I don't know of anyone who is afraid of being invaded by China.

The Chinese will specialise too,

I don't think they have a skilled enough workforce, it is more mundane factory work.
Slave labour can't produce the high skills that are necessary to perform specialized work.
Of course there are such skilled workers in China but most are not.

What what do you suggest? Poland becomes part of China?

33 (1) Poland 0.952

97 (2) China 0.851

Do you mean, buy up the small inefficient farms and make one big one?

No, I personally think manufacturing/factories is better.
There are too many farms in Poland as it is, it's like Ireland was.
Here are a highly educated workforce, so I would think for example, pharmaceuticals would be a good option.
With the new motorway (E.U. funds) the long distance trucks can deliver raw materials and take away finished products.
Poland being in the centre of Europe is in a perfect place to export goods.

Well with the future influx of African/Chines agricultural produce,i don't think a newly enlarged farm even in Poland B could compete.

The same can be said for non-technical cheap goods like cds or shoelaces.
That is why I think specializations would be best in Poland "B".

Pity they don't have Ireland's lower corporate tax here :)

Law / Polish Citizenship for a foreigner whose parents was born in Poland [174]

Yes, I have a friend here in Poland, who recently had a child and he was told they sent a copy to the Irish embassy (he's Irish, the mother Polish).

But with such things it is always better to ask the embassy themselves.

Let us know how you get on, as it could help other people in the future.

Best of luck!

Spoil sport ;p

Edit*

Another couple things of note are:

!) Poland "B" is the Eastern side of Poland, which was under Russia during the partition. It has very little infrastructure. It gets 30% more of the E.U. finds because it lags behind so much.

See map here upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c4/NowaMapaAutostradyStan.svg

Labour is cheaper there than it is anywhere else in Poland. I am also led to believe that of the 2 million people who have left Poland since 2004 (E.U. freedom of movement) most come from there.

Personally I believe this is a good place to invest, due to the infrastructure that will be and the even cheaper labour.

2) Although Poland has a population of about 38 million, they are still mostly rural inhabitants.
Only about 1.7 million people live in the capital Warsaw. The farms tend to be very very small and inefficient and therefore ineffective.
People are moving in to the cities.

So I should have sent my sons birth certificate to the polish embassy?

If I were you I would ring the Poland embassy in Ireland tel. (+353-1) 283 08 55

I was told that the people who make the birth certificate send a copy to the appropriate embassy but just to make sure you should call them.

No problem.

Poland is a poor country but it has improved a great deal in the last decade.

Another few things that should be noted are:

- 2012 Poland and ukrain will be holding the European Cup
- Poland manages to use 95% out of EUR 67.3 billion of funds available in the years 2007-13.
- The Polish Zloty dropped 30%, this heightened internal consumption, lessened imports and increased exports. (No link...)

Of course these are all very positive things, the truth is Poland is still a poor country.
On a personal note, I think most Poles are educated, have a good work ethic and want to improve things. All it needs are the right circumstances and time.

One of the major problems here are the prices for imported goods, they are the same price as everywhere else in Europe but as stated the wages are low.

put a stop to those hideously large pensions that are being paid to former State employees.

That's what Polish people are telling me.
And links in to what Convex is saying about tax...

i would be glad to read the true story good or bad if only i had some refrences.

Poland has pursued a policy of economic liberalization since 1990 and today stands out as a success story among transition economies.
Before 2009, GDP had grown about 5% annually, based on rising private consumption, a jump in corporate investment, and EU funds inflows.
GDP per capita is still much below the EU average, but is similar to that of the three Baltic states. Since 2004, EU membership and access to EU structural funds have provided a major boost to the economy.
Unemployment fell rapidly to 6.4% in October 2008, climbed back to 8.9% by January 2010, but remains below the EU average.

cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/pl.html

With stability restored, Poland was able to offer its well-educated, low-wage workforce, its position in Europe's center, and its tariff-free access to European Union (EU) markets to attract foreign investment--all with the goal of bringing Polish incomes up to the levels of those in the U.S. and Western Europe.
One generation later, the reforms since 1989 have brought success and new challenges.
Poland joined the EU in 2004. Its per capita economic growth rate has outpaced those of the U.S. and of its EU partners.
Polish incomes have risen to 37% of U.S. incomes (up from 29% in 1997)

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

But I don't think I've ever seen a forum with so many generalized thread headings. Simply sets PF apart. Why do you think that is?

I think there are two ways to look at it.

1) The optimist:

Admin has always stressed his desire for freedom of speech on this site. "Poland, the good and the bad", commenting on other forums that have an agenda and are highly moderated, not allowing the freedoms that we have on here.

2) The pessimist:

Tabloids sell.

The recent bout of suspensions was based on it being completely stupid and derailing the whole forum.
Whereas, Jarnowa (for example) is a complete spanner but he sticks to his race topic, as he is consumed by hate and posts on topic.

Do you not think that there has been a positive difference to the average Pole over the past 6 years?

I know what you mean by fluffing the numbers but I think things have changed for the better over the past decade, although there has been a slow down due to other countries being in a recession.

The number of new houses being built and new cars on the new roads suggest you are right.

The first thing I noticed when I moved back to Poland (I had been away for 5 years living in other E.U. countries) was that people were insulating their houses and putting in new PVC windows everywhere. There was a vast noticeable difference and that's just the basics.

In fairness the thread asks for negative and positive racial attitudes towards "interracial" couples.
It is a loaded question, so I am not surprised when people are asked a question and they answer it.

as long as Poles don't feel it

They don't feel the recession because there is none.

I also think it is difficult to see change when you are living in it, now Poland is a different animal than the Poland I saw first 9 years ago.

Such beaureacracy scared away quite a few foreign investors for a number of years.

Agreed.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

true but Poland wasn't really progressing fast before either and that's what iron meant (I guess)

I beg to differ, Poland was shooting up the ranks before the recession.

With a big internal market, retaliative cheap labour meant lots of exports, entrance into the E.U. meant billions of Euros being pumped in to improve infrastructure, millions of Poles working abroad sending their money back.

As is known, Poland is the only country in the E.U. to have not been in recession so far and the future does not look too bad either. It has slowed down of course but nothing like what has and is happening in other E.U. countries.

I think one of the things holding Poland back is the bureaucracy, which certainly has been changing over the past few years to make it easier here. There needs to be more documentation in other languages to make it easier to navigate, this goes for internet banking too etc...

'Bloody foreigners, coming over here and stealing our women!"

Look at jarnowa's threads, all his posts are about "interracial" couples.
He is a racist and claims to be Belgium living in Poland and can't get a girlfriend and rather than accept responsibility for himself, he blames all his problems on "them".

You will find that he is impossible to discuss anything with. You have been warned :)

However maybe in the future my son would like to be able to travel.

Your son can have Irish and Polish citizenship and he can also hold two passports, Irish and Polish.

Let us know if you have any more questions you need answered.

Best of luck.

Work / Salary for an architect with 3years experience in warsaw [37]

I will not advise people to leave where they are and come to Poland if they can not communicate in Polish or English (properly).
It would be wrong of me not to point this out and if the poster can't take the reality I put to him, fair enough. Maybe he'll do brilliantly and be prime minister in a few years but with out proper communication skills, a job, a place to live etc... it's going to be really tough.

Thanks The wiseone, bitter, a coward and a psychic, do you do kid's parties?
