UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

My uncle is married to a Chinese woman, and I can assure you that many Chinese people - the rural folks - don't speak or understand a word of English.

There aren't many Chinese people in rural Britain. And it would be hard for them to live in the countryside without speaking at least some English.

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

For Example is how the First Patented Color Television was by Jan Szczepanik

Untrue, even very. He patented a theoretical system of colour reproduction in 1897. This system he described (but never built) was subsequently proved to be a fantasy.

The Internet was first invented by Polish Paul Baran

No it wasn't. Baran (who is actually Jewish and moved to the US when he was 2 years old) worked on switching techniques for US military use, just before Vietnam :-( - this technology among many many others was subsequently developed by others and put to use for the internet many years later. You can just as easily say that that the person who invented electricity invented the internet.

Also Pole Stephanie Kwolek invented Nylon

The American Stephanie Kwolek did not invent Nylon (Wallace Carothers did), nor does she or anyone else claim that she did. If she had, it would have been a truly remarkable feat - she was 12 years old when Nylon was invented! :-))))

That's just three picked at random from your list. How many other lies are there? If you want to talk about Polish achievements (and most on your list are actually American) then use some genuine ones. Making false claims just looks corny and cheap.

First female self-made BILLIONAIRE entrepreneur in the US is of Polish ancestry – Martha Stewart

The same Martha Stewart who was jailed for serious financial crimes?

If you want to be taken seriously, don't quote such laughable examples. Instead of criticising Polish jokes (whatever they are) you merely come across as one.

News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

Is the fact that "John and Miller were assigned to the same unit as Pietrzak" as surprising to anyone else as it is to me?

Is this somehow unusual?

Marines don't leaves other Marines behind. Neither do they ever forgive Marines who've killed other Marines. Those guys are marked for life.

I suspect this is true.

News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

I only wonder if it's relevant for you guys only because of his last name which is accidentally Polish.

Yes. Many tragic things happen round the world in various countries; they aren't discussed here. This board is for discussion of things Polish, so the fact that the guy who was murdered in strange circumstances was born there is the reason for the thread. No other reason.

UK, Ireland / The Daily Mail - coverage of the Polish people [161]

The swan thing originated with a Sun article. Some people were camping out in tents near London and there were a pile of swans' wings outside. They refused to come out of the tent to speak to the reporter but said they were Polish. If I remember, the article said there was a copy of the bible in Romanian on a table by the tent flap.

The thing about fishing for carp and other river fish to actually eat (yuk) is however true.

News / Illegal drugs in the EU - Polish gangs are top sellers [56]

One joint?

Here in PL they don't seem to go for joints so much as little glass pipes. Strong and nasty hits. A gram would load a pipe a few times, but it's worth mentioning that people here tend to buy a gram at a time.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

We're not bound to see the same

Of course; would you deny the Soviets their spoils of war?

some of my thoughts on the British stab in the back toward Poland

Your thoughts, hmm. And what else might Britain have done? Continued the war alone against an ally?

which were shipped overseas to Canada and Australia

Beats being stuck in a 1950s orphanage.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

Yes they did, of course but after 8.05.1945 not as much as Americans.

But hard enough.

They started war together with Nazis. You've forgotten?

Ahem, they were invaded by the Nazis. The war for them started in 1940. The partition of Poland was something they wouldn't see as a war, and indeed they didn't have to fight to do it.

Illusive. Comparing to former power.

Illusive. Oh dear, pertaining to an illusion. In fact it's very real.

to act against your Polish allies

Who, except Russia and Germany acted against Poland?

who fought long, hard and bravely to save their independence.

And the Soviets didn't?

they needed help from younger cousins

Nephews, sons even, but not cousins.

And each time they power diminished

Yet they are still one of the world's leading countries.

Americans fought really bravely.

And Britons didn't?

Britons lost his Empire.

Britain had been trying to figure out how to get rid of most of the empire for years, and the policy of the 1945 government was to start winding it down.

UK bought a peace

Peace was bought by a hard fight. Not that there was peace when Poland was liberated - the war was still raging against Japan.

wrong deeds

Do you think it would have been a "wrong deed" to act against our Soviet allies who fought long, hard and bravely to gain their sphere of influence?

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

average is about 3200 PLN gross,

That's about the average for PL as a whole. In Warsaw the average is about 5500zl, though I imagine the median is lower, about 3.5k, perhaps a little more. The discrepancy between public and private sector workers is large, and will affect the median in Warsaw. I got the 5.5 figure fro a friend in the tax office, who earns less than that.

What makes it bad is that retail prices really seem to be rising.

indicate, or quote, where exactly in the text those lines are

It isn't exactly a long statement. Why not brush up your literacy skills and have a look.

What do you think about my explanation - why they do?

There's something in it. Americans tend to get the flak nowadays. Soon it'll all be their fault.

Hey Did I said I blame Britain?

Every other bugger does.

Which partition and its exaggerated greatly, some neighbors were in the same state !

Yes, that's true. Though Poland's size and potential are probably part of this. I favour Adam Zamoyski's hypothesis on this.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

not true !!!

At the time of partition it was scandalously underdeveloped.

I'm sorry we will stand by you

At least Britain stood by Poland, if nobody else did.

she was the worst affected

I'm not sure the Russians, the Chinese or the Filipinos would agree with you there.

to sell Poland to Soviets.

Nobody 'sold' Poland. It was Geopolitics. Geo = world, politics = struggle between different sections of society. Maybe Poland was a casualty of those times, but it was by no means the worst affected.

38% of Poland was destroyed

No it wasn't!

Poland was underdeveloped

It never quite got it's act together and as an independent entity has always been problematic. Had things been otherwise, Poland wouldn't have needed to expect others to preserve their independence.

selling Poland

Rubbish. Poland was an economically underdeveloped country next to the Soviet Union. Not Switzerland.

Food / Any unique uses for smoked kiełbasa? [8]

Thinly sliced in a croque monsieur, again sliced in a gratin (that always goes down well here in PL) or instead of lardons in a warm salad.

Of course they can help a stew as well.

read careful

Well, I read it twice, and there's nowt about the British government paying people to malign Poland on the internet, as you claimed. Plenty about Chinese censorship, though there's no evidence that the Chinese could care less about PL.

I like Godlewski's work and am familiar with him because of the Batuty thing. That was fun!

He can get a bit paranoid though, from time to time.

So sheep need proof. You're the one banging on about nutty stuff. So how about citing something to back up what you're saying.

Real Estate / Options for dealing with dishonest landlord in Poland [36]

Summer electric bills of 100zl. Winter electric bills of 500 - 800 zl. With a Jan / Feb like we just had, bills more like 900 - 1200zl or more.

I've come across this before in older buildings. The landlord should have made it clear though.
