Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

The change in the number of non-Ukrainian foreigners is too subtle to be noticed on a day by day basis,

On a year by year basis, it's noticeable.

As long as they speak Ukrainian, or they are IT engineers. Nigerian students need not apply

Much more than that, and a surprising number of opportunities for students.

Law / WHAT IS POLAND'S ACT LAW IF SOMEONE SUBMITTED FAKE STATEMENT IN COURT [3]

what are polish law act if a person give false statement in court???

It's illegal, however proving it is a complicated thing. You need to speak with a good family law solicitor on this matter.

Sometimes, when others are devious in court, all you can do is be more devious.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

I notice that apart from real estate (always an issue in Krakow), the cost of living hasn't noticeably changed, whereas there are far more job opportunites. Including for non-Polish speakers.

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

If Hungary persists with the veto then the only other option is to also charge Hungary with the same breaches, thus effectively excluding them from the voting process on Poland.

This is probably the way forward.

'what's the point of being in a union that claims to uphold democracy but can't do anything to stop my country from dismantling it'.

Yes. Yet its opponents claim it's oppressive.

Basically, it's a waiting game at the moment. Sooner or later we'll see the straw that breaks the camel's back - the only question is what that outrage will be.

I can't find anything

Online.

Those of us who live in PL notice the difference.

polands growth forecast was further increased by Moody's.

The seeds for the current growth were sown during the last government.

The OP would do well - this cannot be restated often enough - to look at fora for either people from his part of the world who are currently in PL, or for overseas students currently at the institution where he wishes to study. They will find more reliable information there, than they will from people living in America who were in Poland and left several years ago.

Your wild exaggerations

Absolute accuracy - Polish cities are changing very fast at the moment. An acquaintance who'd been outside Warsaw for a year was shocked when she returned.

Eight years. Probably longer than you been in Poland.

The best part of three decades, actually. More than half (i.e. double your experience) working in higher education in Poland, and currently on a contract in Africa involving people who will study or complete postgraduate qualifications in Europe, some (as many as I can place there, even) in Poland. As part of what I do, I have to monitor cost of living in cities such as Krakow, and of course I always refer people intending to travel to speak with people currently in the relevant city. there are fora for overseas students in Poland, as well as institution-specific groups. These are excellent sources of advice for the (mostly young and able) people who are going to study there. I recommend that the person who asked for advice checks these out.

the clowns in PiS worked a miracle

The seeds of the boom started before their term of office - there's been something of a snowball effect recently. If you visited Warsaw, you'd be surprised at the mix of people walking up Nowy Swiat, and Krakow too is currently having an expat boom.

As for cost of living, the growth in expats and students has pushed the cost of renting up a little in Krakow, however the costs of everyday life have remained relatively stable.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

a veritable land flowing with milk and honey

As you've been told before, the numbers are increasing fast, Poland is growing as a place to live, to work, to study - the cost of courses and the cost of living is part of that, as well as the possibility to get a visa.

And despite your claimed 'experience' (others here who remember you from your relatively short time in Wroclaw though not necessarily with your time in a small town with no university have questioned this by PM), those of us who are currently involved in one way or another with overseas students, will tell you that things are growing very fast, and that the cost of living remains relatively the same.

Your assertion that the country changed from a practically monolithic monoculture to "cosmopolitan" status

Who claimed that? Warsaw is increasingly cosmopolitan - and yes, over the past few years it has changed hugely as befits a growing economy. Other cities (including Krakow, the subject of this thread) are growing at their own rate - the influx of foreign students from around the world, attracted by the cost of courses, the ease of visas, the cost of living and the government validated and moderated courses is testimony to this.

However much you dislike it.

The only influx you're seeing is Ukrainians

How would you know what we're seeing?

third-worlders who are interested in Poland solely as a way to get into the richer countries of the EU ...

Is this a problem for you? It certainly isn't for them.

As for out Nigerian OP, there is practically zero chance that he will be able to finish his studies in Poland

Given that you know next to nothing about his circumstances etc, and almost nothing about the current situation for students in Poland, you should perhaps hesitate before commenting on things outwith your knowledge.

As I've said already, he should contact people already studying in the city or institution he is interested in, to ask them about cost of living, whether they work or not, how much money they get etc. There are fora for this and they are easy to find and join. I have strongly suggested he do this, something that even you would consider a good idea. The growth of the internet means that people can find out information from people in their situation, rather than rely on hysterical comments from some ordinary Joe somewhere in America with a rich fantasy life and opinions on things he has no current experience of.

misinformation

There you go again, out of date and inaccurate information, from someone on a different continent who gets angry when he's called out on his nonsense.

If the cost of living were "staggeringly high compared to local wages." we wouldn't be seeing such an influx of people from other countries (who get paid 'local wages').

Poland is a growing economy. Plenty happening at the moment, and more and more people coming to live, work and study - the numbers are really growing at the moment.

Easter at the latest. Close to 100% for those at private schools

So you don't know, do you. Most are keen to stay and do just that. I suspect your 'information' is at best out of date, at best made up from nowhere.

For graduate students, the odds are probably worse.

You definitely don't know. Retention rates are good - and this is monitored by the Ministry of Education.

Education for foreigners in Poland is by and large a scam.

No - it's a growing area.

The OP, and the other poster didn't ask for the opinions of some irrelevant person on a different continent, they wanted to know about costs of living in Krakow. It's a city (like Warsaw and increasingly Wroclaw) where people are coming to from across the world to study, to work and to live. The best source of information, as I've said is one of the many fora (findable on google) for people who are doing that now, especially those for overseas students and for the growing Indian community.

Over the past couple of years, the number of overseas students has grown - their courses are validated by the appropriate bodies, and they choose a country at the heart of Europe where living costs (and course costs) are relatively modest compared to Western Europe.

No matter what a fantasist in the boondocks of America says or thinks about non-existent 'proteges', the education sector is growing in Poland, the work opportunities for foreigners are growing, and despite the modest salaries in Krakow, etc (though still good in comparison to many parts of the world where there are far fewer opportunities), people continue to come.

The modest cost of living, and the chance to live in a growing economy are only part of this.

Your "solutions"

So were yours - and as we can see from the wretched job advert above, with someone keeping back up to 70% of the cost of the service and passing on peanuts to the people who actually carry out the service - yours aren't working.

marxist excrements.

How bitter capitalist losers are. Doubtless your bosses and their investors are laughing all the way to the bank.

As I say, the poster interested in life in Krakow or elsewhere, costs, work, etc, should make contact with overseas students who are in PL now - listen to what they are actually saying and doing. There are several appropriate fora - a quick search on google will bring them up.

some bull$hitter

Getting angry, Dom? This 'bull$hitter' actually works in this field right now - part of my job is to do with postgraduate students from Africa, some of whom go to study in Europe (including Poland), and knows whereof he speaks.

poor third-worlders'

Oh dear.

And you're just an ordinary Joe, over in America who hasn't been to Warsaw or Krakow dor several years - you'd be surprised at how fast it changes.

not sure when you were last in Warsaw Dom but my guess is there could be about 5000 foreign students working there.

At least. Many are from India and Africa.

not sure when you were last in Warsaw Dom

Several years ago.

presumably he is a grown up and can make his own choices in life.

Quite. And he'd do well to speak to actual current overseas students in Poland - there are fora for this - rather than some ordinary Joe in America who hasn't been here for several years.

Idk what percentage but id say there's tens of thousands foreign residents in Warsaw

The number is growing fast, especially over the past couple of years.

There are many foreign students working in Warsaw - and there are many opportunities now where Polish is not required

This is true. There are also more opportunities for studenty type jobs.

I would however suggest Warsaw rather than Krakow. There are more opportunities there, less competition, and the cost of living is much the same.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

No, there aren't.

Evidently you haven't been in Warsaw over the past couple of years.

Barring that, a snowball's chance,

There is more and more studenty work. The poster should join a forum for students at the institution he plans to go to - in order to speak with people who are studting there now. That's more useful than listening to a guy from America who doesn't live in Poland.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

A Nigerian student who doesn't speak fluent Polish doesn't have a snowball's chance of finding a job anywhere in Poland.

There are plenty of overseas stufents in Poland who work. You are out of date.

Poland is a lousy choice for third-world students who have to earn their keep,

You would be surprised. You mainly post here in order to deter people, especially from outside Europe, from moving to Poland for either work or study - I suggest people use the search function to confirm this. I also suggest they look at other online fora to read about the real experiences of people from their countries who are in Poland now.

As for Warsaw being "cosmopolitan", far from it. Take out the Ukrainians and Vietnamese, and you're left with about 1% non-Polish residents.

As I say, you're very out of date.

Mechanical Engineering in English language

Stick to the biggest cities, Warsaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Wroclaw. Krakow has too many students - if you are thinking of looking for part-time work, that is the place with the most competition. Warsaw, being the capital, is the easiest, richest and most cosmopolitan city to be in.

It's practically impossible.

This has changed since you were here, especially in the capital.. Although decent student jobs are harder to find without a knowledge of Polish, more and more possibilities do exist.

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

They used pickled cabbage and tinned peas as toppings. And lots of ketchup, natch.

That reminds me of a place in Gdansk (at the entrance to Stogi Beach) that advertises 'The best kebabs in town'. Actually the worst I've ever eaten. Slathered with ready-made mayonnaise and ketchup (of course), made of fatty pork and of course, pickled cabbage. No chilli sauce or anything with a flavour.

The second best pizza I've had in Poland (and a great place to eat) is in the old town in Torun. Only 2 types of pizza (with salami or with mushrooms) very very cheap (11zl about 7 years ago), only clear barszcz to drink for a couple of zl a mug, and unusually for Poland, big long tables, forcing people to interact at least to a minimum level rather than huddle in seperate groups ignoring everyone else. So popular that on a Sunday afternoon there were queues outside. Better than 'Papa John's' or other chains.

all payroll workers are basically "exploited" by default

Of course. That doesn't make it right, moral or particularly sustainable in a democracy.

But apparently you just don't have a clue...

Perhaps more of a clue than you. The privatisation of care services is a very recent (and temporary thing). there is no majority public will for it to continue, and no reason to have business people skimming off up to 70% of the cost and trousering the money.

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

The answer to that is that the waiter most likely had six or eight other tables

No, he's a waiter, he should know that the main course is served after the starter, not together. The place wasn't, by the way, busy.

And after a few questionable comments

You're assuming a lot - the people on our table were more surprised than anything, especially as we'd only started eating the starter and there was no room on the table for the main course.

The thing that makes a difference in a pizza to me is the sauce as the rest of it is basically the same.

A really good pizza is really good. Pizza in New York (those squares) are excellent, however the best I've had anywhere is at a little independent place in Warsaw (ul. Kopinska in Ochota). The guy who runs it won a prize for the best pizza in Melbourne before he came back to Poland and set up there. It's exceptional. The name of the place is Cucciolina.

The worst one I've had, in Poland or anywhere else, is (apart from Da Grasso/Telepizza) one froma delivery firm called Pizza w Nocy. That was spectacularly bad.

@Cardno85, yes. I suspect it's partly because they found that they get good sales from having a very bland product slathered with sauce.

but they suddenly decreased their portion size some years ago, at least in B.Stok.

Yes - I noticed that too. The liver and onions is still nice, though overdone (as always in PL) and I suspect it's pig's liver.

And always guys. Clearly a company policy. Is that even legal?

Probably not, however they doubtless get round that somehow - I think it's legal to have employment initiatives based on gender, age, ethnicity etc, if there's a particular democraphic issue about unemployment. Makes a nice change to have some eye-candy serving the meals.

Some of the waiters are great, some are clueless. Once they brought our starters, then brought the main course 1 minute later. The guy just couldn't understand why that was a problem.

Poles didn't really recognise the product so it never took off.

There was briefly King Pie back in the 90s in Warsaw - people didn't really get what it was.

They do good salads

Dominum do a decent Salade Niçoise - the best thing on their menu.

Sphinx is also still going

That's grown and grown over the past few years. It used to be just round Lodz and Poznan but now it's everywhere. Not as good as it used to be when it was one of the few places that sold lamb. And yes, carrots and raw cabbage with everything. They have some sort of deal where the waiters are officially 'trainees' sent by the employment exchange. They get a subsidy for employing them.

Pizza Hut must be making a fortune from their restaurants in PL. They always seem full.

Watch out for a restaurant called Taco Bell, its not real Mexican food either:)

There are similar things in shopping mall food courts in PL, similar menu and not very good.

Dominos

Dominum in PL is better than Dominos. Still nothing special.

The market is dominated by Telepizza, not very nice.

Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

the online journal makes it so much easier to communicate and keep track of things, but at the same time, there are still plenty of parents who struggle with it.

Also too many course materials for schools are now dependent on a good internet connection. It goes down, and bang, the lesson's gone.

Dominium

Dominum is OK. There's a Polish chain called Da Grasso which I've been to a couple of times and found to be horrible.

There's also Pizza Express which operated as Pizza Marzano and was OK - now it's called Eataliano. I haven't been since the change.

And there's the ubiquitous Telepizza which isn't very good, but has a lot of shops and a big menu.

I don't think vast majority of Poles or Bulgarians in the UK are being exploited

The vast majority of low paid workers are being exploited. Others are getting (very) rich from their labour, of which they only receive a small part of the value.

What would happen If these people were making 50% more.

What would happen if some dodgy private business weren't skimming up to 70% from the price paid by the client and the local authority for their work?

many of those old people would end up without any help as they wouldn't afford it.

It's only recently that "those old people" have had to think about paying for home care...

I'll help you a bit - wait until the next election.
