Life / Welcome to Poland ! (Stay away for your own sake) [239]

well really all those flabby microwaved old women with their aging tits hanging out of tiny vest tops in Sharm made me embarrassed.
They seemed to have no idea what kind of country they were in.

So have you ever been to North African countries?

I dont really see places like Egypt or Algeria or even Tunisia as good holiday destinations for any Western woman with more than half a brain tbh...:)

So are you Egyptian then?

Of course Not :)

" in my country, such things would never happen " - well that statement proves that you havent really thought about it.
but you said you came from North Africa -

" A 2005 report by UNICEF suggested that 96% of Egyptian women between the ages of 15 and 49 who were married or had been married in the past had undergone a form of FGM or circumcision."

Yes i do get your point and i'm totally against all kinds of discrimination.

are you? I bet you are so busy thinking about 'racism' that you have never even thought about how the women around you are treated...:)

Do girls and women in your country have their genitals mutilated?

hmm that does sound annoying and yes rather racist.
but then a woman might get turned away with an insulting comment because she has short hair and is not 'feminine' enough.
That is called 'sexism' and women have to put up with it every day of their lives.
We are not going to lie down and cry about it, as that would be a waste of energy.
Do you see what I mean?

to be honest Jose, in any country night club bouncers love finding reasons to not let people in. It is their little bit of power. Especially crappy little clubs in provincial towns.

Wrong kind of shoes, wrong kind of jeans, an offensive hat, I have heard it all. And I am a white woman.
I really wouldnt put this one down to racism but to hanging about in rubbish places. Trust me.

Feedback / Should PF have a 18+ disclaimer when entering the site [17]

personally I think we should all use this word more and stop making out like it is the worst thing that could ever be said. Why is saying c.unt so dreadful when 'd.ick' or 'p.rick' are relatively inoffensive? Why is that? A touch of misogyny perchance?

IN Welsh they say 'cont' and as they say it all the time, it has been de-powered (if there is such a word, but you know what I mean).

Funny that people get all hot and bothered about the use of such a word when they would have no compunction about attempting to wreck a stranger's life.

It is only a word after all.

Travel / Englishman's travel across Poland! [19]

yes but suggesting the filthy loo is normal in Poland by putting this on day one of your trip with such a caption is....offensive.

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

Welsh - complete waste of time. All my daughter could say after five years of classes was 'dw'in hoffi ceffalau' ( I like horses)...:)

Has this got anything to do with "finding work in Warsaw"? I'm struggling to find a connection

well she speaks English of course, and she could understand Polish pretty well, if not actively speak it.
Yes I was gutted to be honest. It would have been different in a private school, and that grates (a lot) as well.
They had to study Welsh which was a real waste of time actually.

In the UK, you all still learn primarily French as your second language, correct?

yes and the standard of teaching it is unbelievably bad. My children learned the same stuff (hello goodbye, numbers, colours) for three years running.
then at secondary my daughter was considered to stupid to do another language. Son did learned hello goodbye again and that was it.
It is a shame really as those junior years when children really could take in another language are just wasted. Then at secondary children are written off. French is a waste of time anyway these days. No offence to anyone intended.

Life / HIV/AIDS growing in Poland - more fear of pregnancy than STDs [82]

Many believe HIV/AIDS is restricted to

I think this is true yes. There was never any public information campaign about AIDS in Poland as far as I know. Therefore there is a level of ignorance and fear about it.

While in UK (nanny state perhaps? ) back in the 80s every household in the country received a leaflet with accurate HIV/AIDS info, together with other public information sources.

So I was a bit taken aback when my Polish husband nearly went mad at me when he found that my home hairdresser was HIV positive. He said he 'didnt want him in the flat in case he infected the children'...:).

Another Polish person I knew told my son 'you dont need to use a condom, it is silly'.

Sometimes the 'nanny state' drives me mad - other times I am glad it is there.

UK, Ireland / Polish community in the UK: are you happy? [46]

i think the Polish Community on the Isles is fine.

I like that, 'the Isles' - avoids the problem of including Ireland or not.

To be fair though, some Polish people are not v sociable with 'the locals' due to language problems. There was this one Polish girl on our little country bus service, where everyone chats. At first I thought she was 'standoffish' but then I realised that her English was really weak and she had no confidence in her 'chatting' skills. She was perfectly friendly though. She works in the Polski Sklep , lives with her Polish BF., has v little chance to improve.

Life / Tattoos and Popular culture in Poland [51]

just go to Thailand

no thanks that sleazepit of sex and drug tourists never did appeal somehow..:) Besides how did Thailand come into it?

I still think that you have a poor grasp of bio-chemistry if you think that you can 'get AIDS' from autoclaved equipment.
Even the saucepan ful of dettol would be effective.
There might be autoclave resistant bacteria but it aint ''AIDS""

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

honestly, they simply don't understand you!
I remember once I was working in Greece and went to one of those kiosks for envelopes.
Well the Greek for 'envelopes' is 'fakellos', I must have said it twenty times, while the woman there offered me fags, tampax and goodness knows what else - finally she clicked, my fault for stressing the wrong syllable, had been saying FAKellos not fakeLLOS

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

When Poles speak English with me I adapt for their mispronunciation and can usually inter-prate what they are trying to say. Also I dont take the pee, I appreciate that they are trying.

you have missed my point, we are used to hearing English being mangled, while Polish people are not used to that with their language.
anyway how do you know that the guy understood him? do you think he was just 'pretending' to not understand to be annoying?
Reminds me a bit of the English people who are all convinced that they once went into a shop in Wales and 'suddenly everyone started talking Welsh' .

:)

someone has behaved as if he couldnt understand what my husband is saying,

in fairness to the person, they probably couldnt understand him. They are not really used to hearing their language being mashed up.
Imagine stressing all the wrong syllables in Trafalgar Square or, say, Bermondsey, and even a Londoner would be hard pushed to understand.
I just mean that as an example.

History / Poland's society at communism and socialism time [55]

privation (the main economic product of communism) creates a rabid materialism.

Thanks that is interesting, explains some of my ex's behaviour. He now drives a Jag and doesn't support his children...:)
All he could say when he saw my crappy Fiat was 'ewww.'. But then he used to have a Fiat Maluch back in Poland...:)

anyway apart from anything else, it is true, in general Polish people are v hardworking and would definitely not like to rely on government handouts.
