News / Stiffer traffic rules in Poland? [32]

Drivers coming to Poland should drive aggressive at all times, or be eaten up.

Awful attitude. You're gonna get yourself in a serious accident one of these days driving like that. Maybe you won't get killed but maybe you'll be the one that does the killing.

Almost unheard of these days. It's common for the police to let off "one of their own".

Prob coz they know immediately your a foreigner. Anytime I've been stopped it was when my missus was in the car. Short exchange, puppy dogs eyes, 50zl in a handshake later, we're on our way again.

Was talkin about this with a good friend last week. A Polish man, in his early 50s, been driving since he could. Never ever got a fine from a Polish man. In over 30 years of driving. He's been caught by the odd camera alright, but whenever caught by a cop it's always a bribe. Cops are bent as hell, I don't blame them. Citizens detest them, they have crappy jobs that pay SFA and nobody likes the, why wouldn't they take an extra few bob?

Have ye heard about the new traffic cameras?
They'll be installed on the highway between Wrocław & Krakow (will include Katowice etc)
Cameras over the roads will take a photo of your number plate and and at various stage of your journey. Camera will calculate the time it took you to get from A to B and if it's too fast you'll get fined. Loads of people round here complaining about it, I think it's a good idea tbh. People drive far too fast and too dangerously here, hopefully this will cut down on the amount of accidents on that road.

Life / Please help me, with deciding a good Polish name for my baby boy :) [48]

what;s wrong with Ned, short for Edward, Ed, Eddy, Eddie

:P

Julian

I guarantee, he kicks his ass handed to him every single day if you call him that name. I mean, it's basically a girls' name.

You could call him Sue, like the Johnny Cash song so he grows up to be a hardass.
For example:
Waldek, Włodzimierz, Lubomir, Żelisław, Marian (that's a girls name ain't it :P), Barabasz, Manfred, Kleofas, Kordian.

Trust me, name the kid one of the above and because of his horrible name he'll get the sh!t kicked outta him everyday, this will give him inner strength and he'll go onto great things, example: bill gates, tom cruise, tiger woods, winona ryder.... all bullied and became successful...probably coz they all have stupid names :P

News / Poland's Guy Fawkes [88]

deceptive advertising

Install adblock, it's magic, I haven't seen an Internet ad in about 2 years thanks to it.

I suspect that not one person on this forum does either.

y'know they've saying he was active on many many forums......he was more than likely here...
Has anyone noticed that someone's gone missing 'round here since around Nov 11th?

News / Poland's Guy Fawkes [88]

The internet is to blame for quite a lot

Oh yea, blame the Internet.

100 years ago, they were blaming radio, then 80 years ago they were blaming cinema, then 70 years ago they were blaming television, then 30 years ago they were blaming video games (some clowns still do) and now we're blaming the Internet.

The Internet, like the above are tools, only a bad carpenter will blame his saw.

News / Poland's Guy Fawkes [88]

So, the cops here have arrested a guy who apparently wanted to blow up the Polish parliament and the President too.

He was involved with a group & they were armed, cops found TNT, bullet-proof vests etc at his apartment and he had carried out some text explosions.

Fuq in Hell, this is madness.

This is going to be interesting to say the least. Hope he's hanged, let's go old-school on the b@stard.

Life / British living in Poland - documentary [42]

and the effect of Western culture on Poland

The problem you have here lad is that you're gonna need to find someone British who was living here before the end of communism to be able to compare how things have changed. I severely doubt any 'western' person willingly moved here pre-1989.

Poland is just as globalized as britain, Ireland, France, Germany, American hiphop and crappy dance music fills the radio waves, people watch Top Gear and HBO, just like at home. Lady Gaga and beiber on the tele, along with the Kardashians. MTV here is the same as in the uk, it still doesn't play music. Kids in Poland dress pretty much the same as kids in Scotland.... y'know that fake hipster thing where they all have floppy hair and tight jeans and the tongues of their shoes are over the pull-ups of their jeans.

Poland has experienced a 'catch-up' commercialism, most people are pretty happy with it, freedom of choice, H&M, Tesco, OBI, Carrefour, Real etc etc.

The "westerization' of Poland is no different than the globalisation of the UK or indeed Europe as a whole.

If you want to do something interesting for your journalism radio things, read up on the Scottish soldiers who took park in the Silesian rebellion:

muzeumslaskie.pl/en/in-a-foreign-land-the-allies-in-silesia-at-the-time-of-the-plebiscite.php
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silesian_Uprisings

Your teachers will lap up that sh$t, they're heard all the stuff on globalization already.

Travel / Toy shops in Poland cities [10]

Do they have phone books in Poland?

No, Phone books have never existed in Poland, most people are highly dyslexic and to put words and numbers together would lead to outbreaks of wild sporadic panic. It would lead to civil unrest and could even lead on to all out civil war.

If they war ensues then it is more than likely that wantaway areas such as Sląsk and Kaszuby would gain their independence.
This would be disasterous for Poland, especially since most of the money Poland earns in taxes is robbed by Warsaw from coal- and industry-rich Sląsk.

Do they have phone books in Poland?

A very dangerous question. Beware. CBS is watching you now man.....and I don't mean the news channel :P

News / Hooligans in PRL times ... and Warsaw in 2012 [28]

There was widespread disgust at the way Saddam Hussein was executed. Even Americans, who could hardly be accused of loving him, found it frankly repellent. Death is a sobering experience and awaits us all. Laughing at the dead is foul. People who laugh at the dead should hang their heads in shame. Try telling your family a joke at Christmas about worms eating the flesh of your grandma.

ya see that's a huge problem in Poland, you take death waaaaaay too seriously. Death is just death, it's OK to joke about it.

Life / Driving license needed while driving in Poland? [8]

Yea, recently they changed the law where you have to have it otherwise it's a fine, but it's not a big fine, I think it's only about 100zl.

Back at home (Ireland), you don't have to have it on you but if you're stopped and you don't have it then you need to go to the local copshop with a certain number of days and produce it.

History / Goodbye Lenin - we don't want you in Poland! [85]

Smurf too.

nope, we didn't learn about Lenin in school other than, there was a Russian revolution and that meant they left the first world war. I just like my RATM tshirt. I also have a USSR one (this sexy number) and a USSR army hat like this hat.

I'm certainly not a communist, I'm actually a crime-fighting Jedi trained neo-libertarian.
The bonus comes in the fact that empty symbols like these annoy flammers like Jola and Varsovians.

This is me in my Che tshirt. i41.tinypic.com/mhem3a.png]che tshirt

* not actually me

This is you, angry

old people in poland

This is both mixed together.

See, we can all get along if we just try :)
Peace and love

Work / Looking To Move To Poland Within The Near Future. Teaching English or IT? [18]

The situation here is grim

Depends where ya live. In the cities around Katowice you can earn anything from 50-120zl per hour depending on how many people are in your class.

Szczecin

is grim though, awful kip, awful football team too.
But y'know chap if you ain't tied to Poland then why settle here when you can go somewhere and earn the big bucks like Korea? I've mates that did CELTA and got gigs over there and they're laughing now.

Life / Abrupt Poles explained ! [51]

This is hardly new or cutting edge research, I've read about a half dozen articles that cover the same or very similar ground.

that's like something a hipster would say.

'''pfft, I knew about this (band) years ago (before they were cool)."
Good for you dude
*thumbs up

IME

IMO?

I've gotten used to how people ask for things here now, doesn't bother me, never really did, although at first I thought it was a bit mad. But ya know, ya get used to it quick. The thing I don't like is for example, when you get to work and your colleagues asks you straight away to do something or send something or whatever. And I'm standing there, haven't even taken off my coat or turned on my computer thinking "eff off man, I just got here" And all I say is "Ah Marek, how was your weekend? Did you go out or go to the cinema?'

And every week it throws him, coz I know he's a boring so-and-so and all he does is play world or warcraft every weekend. Shuts him up for a few minutes until I'm ready to deal with him.

No foreplay at all, I suppose it's the same with Polish men and that's why Polish girls wanna get with foreigners so much (^_^)

Life / Spanish Freeview in Krakow [2]

With UPC you can hit a button and change it back to the original language but it doesn't work for loads of channels, actually none of the Polish ones, just ones like the BBC channels, most of the documentary one and thankfully Eurosport.

Ah sure feck it, Polish tele is crap, get yourself an IP proxy and watch everything on BBC player, 4OD or Irish aertv

News / Curb shack-up privileges - black MP John Goodson appealing to the labour minister [21]

Apart from everything else, I don't think you quite understand what exactly it is that Mr Godson is talking about. The only thing he did actually say was that if you're pretending to be single, and claiming benefits as such, but you're actually living with a partner, your benefits should be taken away.

Bahahahaha, you're been found out Bobbo.
Lying thru your gnashers.
Shameful display old chap.
Unlucky.

Well done Magda *hugs

News / Curb shack-up privileges - black MP John Goodson appealing to the labour minister [21]

Godson is a man of God and is sharing Christian values with his fellow-man regardlesws of borders. It is the duty of every Chrsitian to evangelise. There are expats on PF who have no qualms about spreading libertine-decadent Sick Europe values in Poland.
