News / How do Poles feel about the outcome of Germany's elections? [90]

Danzig no longer exists; Gdansk does exist.

That's not true. Danzig is simply German name of Gdańsk. It describes the same city. It's still used in German language, same as Slavic version is still used in Polish and English.

Like many other Central European cities, Gdańsk has had many different names throughout its history. The name of a settlement was recorded after St. Adalbert's death in AD 997 as urbs Gyddanyzc[3] and later was written as Kdanzk in 1148, Gdanzc in 1188, Danceke[4] in 1228, Gdansk in 1236,[5] Danzc in 1263, Danczk in 1311,[6] Danczik in 1399,[3][7] Danczig in 1414, and Gdąnsk in 1636.

Life / shopping on Ebay from Poland [9]

I was ordering a lot of stuff from the internet (could be 100 times). Many times packages were send with Poczta Polska and I had never any problem. I think, that It's also important where you live in Poland, because some departments are more competent than other and in some they employ better postmen.

Study / My experience in Poland (Poznan) as a student who recently moved from Syria [117]

Universities created interned in Poland. They always had the fastest Internet and usually dorms were connected to the university networks. It's much slower when you live in small town or in the village.

Not sure about your statement mon ami!

I don't like such slideshows.

netindex.com/download/allcountries/

USA - 33th
Poland - 46th
Hong Kong and Singapore of course top 2 places, as the richest city - countries in the world.
Surprisingly Lithuania and Romania 11th and 12th. Moldova 17th.

Syria nearly last.

Real Estate / Astounded by the poor value of residential property here in Wroclaw [92]

It's better to have somebody experienced with you as there are some cheaters and it's sad to be cheated for few hundreds thousands PLN. For example I've read about people selling their apartment few times during the same day. They used flaw of the law which allows notary to update land registrations in 2 days after signing sale agreement. Only thing they had to do, was to appoint few meetings with buyers at the different notaries. One case was even that they guy was not the real owner of an apartment. He rent apartment, faked owner's id and sold apartment to few people.

Not to get cheated in such way I would suggest to take an picture of the seller and ask neighbors if he is really the owner. 2nd thing to do is make an appointment with notary on Monday 7:00 am. Then ask notary to mention in agreement not only date, but also time of signing. If the owner is real and he tries to sell apartment few times during the same day, then the 1st selling agreement is only valid. Monday obviously so you know that he hasn't signed anything day before. Most of notaries don't work on Sunday.

It's just 2 things which I've heard. There must be more to watch out.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

Depending which data you're watching prices in Poland are going down or up:

Is now a good time to buy an apartment in Poland?

We've September 2013 and reviewing the blog , I realized that the last entry on the housing market have made in April 2011. How time flies! In previous entries took on a serious expression on his face and warned against buying a house because of the still high prices. And probably well advised , because of the previous entry , housing prices fell on average by 10% , and since 2007, when I made the first article on the subject nominal price drop has already reached more than 20% .

Well, I've been only to Europe so I don't know how it's like a bit more to the South :P So you have radiators in Syria? :P

Yeah for example in Guangdong, China it's normal to have just above 10C during winter and no central heating. Just people stay in jackets in school or offices.

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

Book them a weekend away in a nice hotel in Poland. you can pay online and send them the credit note.

I don't think that it's so good idea. Much better would be if they had voucher valid at least for few months. I wouldn't like being forced to go somewhere ad given date. I could have different plans and wasted gift is worse than no gift.

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

Read terms and condition but I would be surprised if Amazon Gift card was not accepted for shipping to Poland. I think the gift card can be in any currency, Amazon should handle currency exchange. And the best would be pounds if they want to order from UK or EUR if from Germany. But they shouldn't loose much on currency exchange if it's USD.

And as json wrote, we don't use Amazon giftcard because Amazon is not very popular in Poland, because they don't have polish version of website. But ordering from International version (.com) or German or British is possible to Poland and gift cards should be accepted then.

so the best buy them this one, because it seems that only British amazon ships shooings above 25 GBP for free to Poland.

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

It's usual to give 200zł per person as a wedding gift. As a foreigner you will be expected at least double (but of course your case is different, since you didn't take part in the wedding)

What about Amazon Gift card?

There is no Polish department of Amazon, but shopping above 20 eur are shipped for free to Poland from UK.

I think that Western Union or standard money transfer is waste of money. You could alternatively send them with mail prepaid card topped up with some cash and give PIN number through an email. Here such card costs 20zł. PayPal money transfer is free, but you both must have paypal.

(I don't consider turkey as europe but some people do )

I think that at least architecture of western Turkey is very similar to Greek or south Italian, so it's European. But northern Europe is of course much greener than southern, so I understand that it may surprise a little bit.

Law / Permanent stay in Poland for a engaged brazilian? [9]

University of Gdańsk is one of better. But you study philology, so only your knowledge of studied language matters later. Scandinavian language is a good choice. I think demand for people speaking such languages is higher now than supply in Poland. About costs you must know how much you have to pay, so we cannot help you more. The city is maybe 4th the most expensive in Poland.

Depends on what you can do. Moving here to study is easy, not so easy to find a job that will let you stay as a worker and not a student.

I think the law says that an alien must stay legally for at least 5 years and have good job at the moment of applying for permanent stay permit. That would mean that studying time would be included into 5 years period. It makes it much easier. Just 4 years studies and 5th year work. You could even pay somebody for the last year to employ you, just to get this permit. Then with permit it's much easier to search for job.

But I am not an layer so somebody should confirm that or deny.

I have found an layer opinion about this matter: karta-pobytu.pl/porada_prawna/3587/Nieprzerwany-pobyt-w-Polsce

So the most important is that during this 5 years you cannot leave Poland for longer than 10 months and single leave cannot last longer than 6 months. (It's better to have papers proving that, when applying).

exceptions:
- medical care abroad
- delegation to work abroad by Polish company

And about study time, it counts as 50% of time spend studying. So In the case I wrote before: 4 years studies + 1 year work, they would count you 2 + 1. I guess it's in order to hinder getting permanent permit by all foreign students in Poland.

And your fiance has the same right to come here as any foreigner. You should marry her in order for her to be able to stay in Poland without work and studies there.

News / Poland's universities go up in world rankings [23]

if you want to compare business universities , you use the official ranking of business universities .

official?

Supposing research were published in Polish, would this not give Polish universities an edge?

Polish is not the international language of scientists. English became the language of scientists because majority of the best research was lead in English speaking countries. Who doesn't know this language doesn't publish in English journals, but also doesn't do science, because publication has no sense without relating it to the newest publications from the world (which are in English)

But of course that gives advantage to English speaking countries, because there even not so innovative publications are in English journals, while in other countries lower quality publications are in local language. I agree that these rankings overrate English language universities but on the other hand there is no way to do better ranking. It also encourage scientists around the world to publish in English, which is good because make publications available to the world scientits community.

News / Poland's universities go up in world rankings [23]

No doubt the same would be true for native speakers of French and French publications.

But all cutting edge inventions are published in English, not French, Chinese or Russian.
