Work / PAT testing electrical equipment in Poland [51]

Until one day your five year old fills the sink to wash his hands then knocks the shaver you left on the side of the sink into the water

Agreed. It's dangerous. They aren't even special shaver sockets, just normal ones. Plus tiny bathrooms with those fancy showers with the lights in and a washing machine running next to it on a wet floor. All installed by the occupant's cousin who isn't a trained electrician.

And the plug sockets, bathroom or not, come off the walls, leaving bare wires exposed.

Work / Questions about Overseas Resident Applying Flight Attendant Based in Poland [3]

I am not sure if I can, for example, work for British Airways but living at Warsaw.

Some BA staff do live abroad even though they're based at Heathrow, although I'm not sure if any live as far as Warsaw. I've heard of Heathrow-based cabin crew living in Paris and Amsterdam. There is (I think) a rule about how long it takes you to travel if you're called into work. You're best bet is to ask on a forum for cabin crew.

Even a lot.

They may well lose this if the logging continues.

Classifieds / Polish Home Carers Needed in Colchester, Essex, UK [60]

in Poland

Is the job in Poland?

Half of £16,000

Is below the median wage in PL. £16,000 is little more than half the median wage in Essex.

And of course you're missing the point, as usual. Some bottom feeding temp agent is skimming off 70% of the cost. If anything is likely to "ruin the economy totally", it is this.

Do you think that polish electricians should be educated and monitored by exams

They are already - there's various certifications for working with different things (e.g. three-phase, high-voltage etc) and these are as far as I know accepted outside Poland. A friend works in Germany on the basis of the certification (uprawnienie) he did in Poland.

Travel / Dealing with Taxi Drivers in Poland [5]

taxis to and from the airport in Warsaw,

From the airport to the station 50-60zl, sometimes a little less. More at night or on Sunday/public holidays. If you have Uber, it's a little cheaper. Only use radio taxis (ones with the name of a company written on the roof sign). They all display the price in the window - in Warsaw it's usually between 1.80 and 3.20 zl per km, mostly 2.40.

If someone approaches you at the airport whispering "taxi", ignore them. Either get one at the taxi rank or order one from either of the firms who have stands inside.

In Mragowo, ask your hotel who they use and stick to them. Most are honest.

Life / Polish Attitudes toward America [36]

I imagine such attifudes of disdain for the the rest of the world were also common in other empires just as they started to deca

The Americans are even admitting this themselves now. Their policymakers are talking about how to survive in what the US is calling a 'post-hegemony world'.

I haven't said a word about this particular job offer

Really? It's the topic of the thread...

But what's a "reasonable level" isn't a matter of "social justice" or anything of that sort

It is exactly that.

and want to push the wages up through administrative decisions

Far better than wanting to "push the wages" down through "administrative decisions" like suddenly (and fortunately temporarily) allowing bottom feeding temp agencies to skim off 70% of the cost of social care...

The common sense approach is to keep the wages on reasonable level

£16,000 per year isn't a "reasonable level".

The common sense approach is to stop bottom feeding 'temp agencies' skimming up to 70% of the cost paid by the local authority for home care services, paying the minimum that they can get away with and trousering the rest...

Fortunately it's very limited under the terms of the accession treaty and isn't observed that much.

I heard they are buying property in Poland on

On a small scale, and Poles are also buying in Germany. No bad thing either way.

Hard to know how this relates to America, except to sho the contrast between the freedom there of land ownership compared to the restrictive practices that still exist (though there's a time limit before the law expires) in certain parts of Europe.

Law / Which Poland's visa I can apply - national visa D or Schengen visa? [27]

many people with the same or very similar names

Not that many. Most people from Middle Eastern cultures have their first name, followed by their father's name, their grandfather's name and then a family name. That's four names in total, making it easier to distinguish people apart than the myriad of John Smiths or Andrzej Nowaks. Passports usually have peoples mothers' names on too.

Especially if he appears in the Interpol database or any of the anti-terrorist databases, which are automatically checked when they scan his passport

That doesn't rule out admission at all - there are plenty of people with Schengen visas who you personally would prefer to exclude.

a security threat.

Likewise - I'm on the database myself, due to travelling to Iraq every month for four years, and while it does occasionally cause delays at airports, it hasn't yet resulted in exclusion from any country.

That just doesn't add up.

A matter for him.

Law / Which Poland's visa I can apply - national visa D or Schengen visa? [27]

You are effectively banned from traveling to any European country, including Poland and Norway, for life

This is not strictly true. They often just question you at borders. It all depends on the degree of the perceived threat, on the country (Poland are quite relaxed) and on the individual circumstances.

we meet each other 4 times during this time in Afghanistan, srilanka,Maldives and india

This is something that might be a stumbling block - you need to spend more time with your wife first, to demonstrate that you are a couple.

You may find it easier to visit through a third country however there is still the issue that so far, your marriage is a long-distance relationship. This is something the authorities can be awkwards with. You need to spend more time together with your wife, perhaps starting a family before applying for a visa.

Good luck.

People (and groups of people) are not interchangeable

Yes we are.

How can a Nigerian Obten a student visa to study in Poland and how is the process and the cost

You need a place at university, and proof you can cover the costs of your stay.

Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

Any teacher worth their salt can tell you off the top of their head the level of any child in their class without needing to grade them on a test.

Absolutely. Grading kids often does much more harm than good.

children with learning difficulties in the areas of literacy and maths who are in a remedial programme and where clear goals need to be set and progress measured against those goals

For adults in that situation (usualy people attending challenging behaviour units, who have special training needs) the system used is called Goal Attainment Scaling - some fiddly maths in calculating the degree to which a person's specific goal is being met, and with the intention of developing clear strategies to get there.

For me, they are completely useless, and the time wasted on grading/marking could be spent on preparing nicer materials

Essentially portfolio-based assessment. I believe it can work just as well towards a summative assessment as well as just formative.

Good that you've got good decorations for the classroom wall - and of course it's motivating for the kids to see their own stuff there, especially if this is done sparingly and creatively.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

such a horrific abuse of a woman....It's rape

To have a consensual relationship and start a family?

But any "love" in this case would be forever tainted with pure and hateful selfishness

You obviously have a right to hold whatever bizarre opinion you pull out of wherever about other people's relationships - however you don't say how this is related in any way to the salary levels and cost of living in Krakow i.e. the topic of this thread.

Those 20 hours also only applied to those on umowa o prace, which was nearly no-one.

This is true. If someone chooses to work long hours and it is legal, that is up to them. The only issue is workers' rights, which Poland circumvents by allowing people (including erstwhile English Teachers like 'Dominic') to claim to be self-employed.

It's a monstrous thing to do to a woman

Get her pregnant? In which case 90% of men must be 'monstrous'.

f your main and only goal is to secure residency in the UK, everyone else be damned. Only scum would do such a thing.

Sad that you've revealed your motive for trying to take a thread on the cost of living and salaries in Krakow off-topic.

People emigrate for work or study for so many reasons and this is only increasing as the world gets smaller - your nonsense isn't going to stop even one person.

And yes, the cost of living in Krakow is moderate, more and more people come to study in Poland every year and more work is available for them as the economy grows. Whether you think people are

scum

or not.

return home, broke and broken, having squandered their families meager life savings

Melodrama, from some guy in America who simply does not know.

probably getting a British citizen pregnant in the meantime.

What's wrong with that?

But yes you're right you rly have to go there to experience It yourself and network join clubs etc

This is absolutely true. Due to the year on year increase in overseas students, there are more and more possibilities. My OH works at a university (with a very low drop-out rate) organising activities, welfare, integration. It works well.

I wouldn't suggest Krakow - there are simply too many foreign people there, all chasing the same work, and rent is driven up by this. Warsaw is the best place if someone wants to work as well/instead, and the cost of living is moderate.

Hardly 'scam artists' - people choose to go abroad for so many reasons, usually to have opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have. On courses in Poland there are (as you would know if you had actually been involved) attendance requirements, monitored by the state. And no, a visa to study in a Schengen country doesn't get people into the UK.

and would be deported for violating the terms of their visa.

On a student visa, it is possible to work.

And many in Krakow do exactly that. Even more in Warsaw.
