Food / Is chocolate popular in Poland? [52]

Hagen daz was started by Polish Jews, however, it is all American- known as foreign branding. Poles do it here with Prince Polo...etc etc.

Love / Foreigners: would you have moved to Poland if it was full of fat/ugly women? [42]

pip
yes, that is me.
a) I thought you came here with your husband when he got a job here (didn't you?).
b) I have never actually met you (so you could technically be a 400 pound teenager who lives in Des Moines).

My husband is Polish- I am the foreigner. We initially came over before we were married to work. Then back to Canada for three years and now back to Poland- total of 9 years. Both times he was hired from Canada as a repatriated Pole. Maybe I read your statement wrong.

Des Moines- nah, I am from Ottawa.

Love / Foreigners: would you have moved to Poland if it was full of fat/ugly women? [42]

I have never met a foreign woman who had been here more than a couple of years and was not married to a long-term expat or a Pole.

yes, that is me.

So if I was single, no kids- would I go to Poland if it was full of fat ugly men? depends on the money. Many people travel to foreign countries to make a buck or two and don't even have a social life. example, I have a friend from Canada who is as white as they come- and he is a ginger with very fair skin. He moved to Algeria for two years to do a contract. He did his time and got paid good money. He had no life- pretty much lived on a guarded compound and then went to work.

His next posting was Kazakstan. (too many jokes there) He actually had a better life and ended up marrying a gorgeous Kazakstani lady and now they live in Calgary. Sometimes you have to go through the garbage to get where you want to be.

So, yes, I would. But then again- I don't always judge people based on their looks- I like to make a judgement on a person after I get to know them. There are some beautiful Polish ladies here who are complete and total b*tches with no personality- are there some people that are so shallow that would marry somebody only based on looks? That to me is more sad than all the money in the world

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

God damn it there are some dumb mother f*ckers in this world.

I certainly did. And it is my life's work to screw over every Pole that ever wants to visit Canada.

In all seriousness, I do think that Canada is becoming too American. I think it is more than just our geography. Canada has been bombarded with all things American for as long as I remember- we watch what is good and bad on American t.v.....almost like we don't know where our borders lie. I think Canada should open its eyes and remember what is good about Canada and why so many immigrated there and stop watching the crap that comes out of the U.S.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

prejudice is everywhere and it effects every gender, religion, ethnicity--etc etc.

As a generalization- border security is a joke. It is run by people with minimal education and minimal personal and language skills. And to top it all off- they are all on power trips because they can yeah or nay somebodies entrance into a country. I have seen this first hand in Canada, US, UK, France and Germany.

What happened to Robert Dzienkanski is pathetic. Absolutely the RCMP officers should have been charged- if you read the article it says that his mother has decided to leave it alone- perhaps she wants peace.

My husband and his parents are close friends with another murdered Pole. His name was Erik Czapnik. He was a cop in Canada, on duty, when an insane former RCMP officer stabbed him from behind while he was writing a report outside the hospital. This man was a teddy bear -he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you are Canadian you will have heard of this man and the parade and funeral that followed. I also have another good Polish story but I can't write anything because it is in the midst of court proceedings.

My point- for every bad Polish story there is a good one.

Canada does not discriminate against Poles- that is a joke. But what needs to be overhauled is border security- there is no reason why this man flying to Winnipeg should have been detained- I thought a lesson was learned in Vancouver. I guess not.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

The fact is that even today many "Canadians" look down on many Slavic people. They will make fun of your lastname, they will say you are a commie, you are behind times, blah blah blah. The Cold War didnt help either.

This is complete *******. Totally. This is not true at all- do you have any stats to back up this claim?

If you follow the Robert Dzienkanski case you will know that the RCMP are now facing charges for what they did to that poor man.

Here is a link- I am not sure how accurate or up to date it is as it is only wikipedia.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_DziekaƄski_Taser_incident

The people that work border and immigration are not rocket scientists. They are a-holes. I have had the worst experience of my life in Chicago O'Hare- and I am not Polish nor a visible minority. They are all a-holes on a power trip.

Life / Moving to Poland - When to get Left-hand-drive [10]

I can't really answer that, sorry. I have a dog too and kids and if I was to make the drive from the U.K. I would want my own car and then I would worry about selling it once you are settled. I have seen loads of people driving here- maybe you don't need to sell it right away? So at least you will be able to orient yourself and get everything organized without having the added stress of selling the car.

Food / Orange Roughy in Krakow? [9]

Poland does not have a huge choice in terms of fish from my experience , the Baltic sea is very polluted and too cold to have a wide variety of fish species.

The Baltic is not polluted compared to the Atlantic or Pacific. If you can find Baltic salmon in Krakow- buy it. It is much better than the farmed garbage that comes from Norway.

If the orange roughy lives to be 149 years old- stay away from it. It will have 149 years worth of pollutants in it. You can google for yourself which fish are the best to eat but generally the older the fish- the more chemicals it has in its body.

Law / Starting a car junkyard in Poland [27]

PIP seriously just shut up, i know you think you are the be all and end all of all businesses but you really dont have a clue here, as you dont have in other issues but thats another story.

seriously- got issues? You are pretty aggressive and not even through provocation. You are just making yourself look like an arse when you attack me for no reason.

I don't think I am the "be all and end all of all businesses" what I am is a foreigner who has started a business in Poland- perhaps somebody can relate.

Delph- I think you may be spot on with your observation.

UK, Ireland / Grateful Polish photographer stitches up his Welsh hosts [96]

I saw these photos today and quite frankly, they are not any more different or worse than any other city in the entire world. I have travelled a fair amount and have literally seen this everywhere.

I have seen it in Warsaw and Krakow and Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, NYC, Edinburgh, and in Belfast. Edinburgh was by far the worst.

However, that said, the worst for me is the boozed up Brits abroad. I have seen groups of guys in Bratislava, Prague and Krakow puking their guts out in the old towns. It was revolting.

Law / Starting a car junkyard in Poland [27]

I agree that it is recycling and I also think the car parts is a good idea. My main issue is the stuff that leaks from the cars or doesn't get properly disposed of or even removed. If there is no policing of the chemicals then there is a good certainty that it won't get properly disposed of. Seriously, why do you think there is so much junk and garbage dumped in the forests. I don't think somebody will remove it out of the goodness of their heart.

News / Gap is setting up shop in Arkadia in Warsaw [20]

I'm surprised none of my relatives have asked me to send Gap clothing to Poland. We've got it coming out of our ears in the US.

you can get it here too. People with family in north america send it back so their relatives can sell it on Allegro. Their quality has cheapened over the years but it will probably be successful here because Polish people want it here and will pay for the inflated prices of it. A few years ago we were in Hood River, Oregon and did some outlet shopping at Gap- the clothes were stupidly priced and the dollar was at 1:2 to the zloty- underwear for 99 cents, a jacket for 20$--it was crazy.

Work / Working Vs Private English Lessons Vs Starting a Small Business in Poland [33]

I have started my own business in Warsaw and I am not completely bilingual- I speak Polish but not fully bilingual. People don't seem to mind so far. I have set my own hours. I have been open for almost three weeks and have already paid October and Novembers rent. The hardest part so far is the advertising of my business. We have 10,000 flyers to be distributed, I sell in store and also on Allegro and I am hitting up the English community and of course the Polish.

This place has taken 4 months of prep time. Getting the stock ready, getting the store ready- it is a huge commitment. I would suggest that if you can't commit to something whole heartedly then don't do it. It isn't worth the hassle. As for the language- that will come, it is possible to work if you are not totally bilingual.

Food / Moving to Poland - Culinary Concerns and Food Markets Availability? [15]

I know how it works- I have the same issue. My point is that epi pens are few and far between in this country. And they have an expire date so it is not like you can stock pile them for your duration here. If you are only here for a year than it is no big deal.

Food / Moving to Poland - Culinary Concerns and Food Markets Availability? [15]

if you are anaphalactyc like I am- make sure you have enough epi pens. when I was going through testing here there were none to be found in Warsaw except for one that would expire in a month- and they are not cheap. I had to wait for the manufacture to produce one. they have an expire date on them- so make note of that too.
