News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

Poland is view in west as niger of Europe.

Why? Romanian and Ukrainian labor costs are cheaper (and Hungarian now interestingly enough...). So why the reason?

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

Why on earth shouldn't Poland have international phone calls as cheap as in the UK?

With VOIP, calls are just as cheap. With TP...well, you might want to ask them why international calls are so expensive. It's convenient, because they speak Polish.

I gave some good tips in my first post, who's willing to follow them?

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

If there was any specific attitude towards Poles as opposed to other "Eastern European" countries, it was probably due to the number of Poles that migrated after the revolutions. It's interesting though, Northern Europeans usually focus on Poles, and Southern Europeans focus on Romanians and Bulgarians.

Life / Tricks & Dodges (The Poles are nothing if not inventive) [26]

Why does the cucumber not just go rotten and mushy ?

The liquid doesn't have anywhere to go. Temperatures in the slab won't get warm enough for it evaporate. This is prime well thought out "innovation".

Life / Foreigners in Poland and what they think of us [54]

I visited most of the European countries, I haven't heard anyone speaking Polish other than in Poland.

Lots in Germany, heh, and the UK for that matter. It's also nice for basic communication in the Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic. In Siberia, there were a couple of Polish speakers as well. It's not the most useful language, but it doesn't hurt.

Quite a few foreigners don't bother, especially if they don't need to. I'm guilty of that to an extent.

Life / Weather in Poland - some explanations [30]

Three very distinct seasons in Poland:

Freezing cold
Not too cold
Freezing cold
God awful cold

but guys keep saying "here." Poland's a big place? How do I keep track?

Actually because of the geography, the climate tends to be pretty similar. Every once in while you have low pressure systems that just sit over half of the country, but for the most part the weather doesn't vary a whole lot from region to region. I'd wager a guess and say that 95% of Poland sits no more than 300m MSL, so no big variations based on altitude either.

Real Estate / Legal questions about dividing a property in Poland [19]

Why not just agree on a price and buy out the other family members (the parents can keep it in a savings account or something)? That will probably be the cheaper and less stressful route in the long run.

Life / Poland's Next Top Model (TV show) [73]

rofl! Good job sharing your experiences in gentlemen's clubs/brothels!

Hey, you knew exactly what I was talking about :)

It seems like this whole top model thing probably works out pretty well. There are also those recruiting and agency things set up in the malls looking for models and "hostesses". What is that exactly? I mean, the model part I understand, is hostess just another way of saying pretty girl to stand next to whatever I'm trying to sell?

Life / Poland's Next Top Model (TV show) [73]

That means I socialised with a woman for about a year who had a made-up name - and according to her, many of her countrywomen are also using this made-up name for some reason.

That was just her stage name, tip better :)

Or is it all like all the other "top model" programs, full of annoying, not-very-attractive women?

Of course, same format. Lather, rinse, repeat. Just keep it on ESPN Classic or one of the cartoon channels, and you'll be alright.

Travel / Will I have a problem upon exiting Poland? (American visited Poland through Germany) [20]

They pull me over everytime I drive across. They seem to pull over all the buses too. Don't know if they check the trains at all anymore.

Only safe bet, pay someone to fly you over the border from an uncontrolled field in Poland to an uncontrolled field in Germany *cough* *cough*. The skies in Schengen are the only borders that really are open...

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

When travelling from Poland to London by coach in the 1990s, all the Czech nationals at Dover were whisked through with no problem, but all the Poles were given the third degree, and always, without fail, at least one or two from each coach were deported. There's much more I witnessed on a number of occasions at Dover, but I'd be trolling here.

I think you just answered the question there.

But so where Slovaks, Ukrainians and Hungarians, and yet who has ever heard of Hungarian, Ukrainian or Slovak jokes?

It's a question of numbers.

Obama outdid himself trying to curry favour with the 6-million-strong Jewish electorate but never bothered to address a single PolAm group during his campaign although our Polonia number 9-10 million.

Here, it's not just a question of numbers. The average Jewish American is a bit more influential than the average Polish American. Not to mention, that geopolitically, Israel is much more important to the US, and the politicians than Poland. Not an opinion, just calling it like it is. Or maybe it's a question of organization... Also the Jewish vote is fairly single issue, whereas Poland doesn't have issues with its sovereignty :)

What rights? Well, for one taxpayer-funded Polish studies in schools similar to holocaust studies, Afro-American curricula, Hispanic studies and the like.

If no one wants to study it, and no one finances it, why should a university offer it? You mentioned it earlier, be assertive, that's what the US is all about. Start a program at your local college. The US, despite where it's headed, isn't a fully communist nanny state yet. You can't sit back and wait for things to happen. Take that money that you wanted to invest, and start a program.

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

Nuts. I am sooo sick of peeps b!tching about stupid and imaginary crap.

There are more women now in management positions than men. Women are also graduating high school and attending university at a rate much higher than men...In the US and Poland!

History / BBC - Center for Military Studies - Gerald Kochan [28]

how is it being used to make more people aware of the bravery of the Polish pilots in WW2.

PS, my logbook might as well be a child. It lives with me, travels with me, and I would not part with it unless I thought it would contribute to some greater good.

scroll down for wroclaw's Train to Heaven The biggest heap of junk i've ever seen.

I like the train! Dunno, a bit more thought provoking for me than a copy of a symbol that we see every other day.

News / Should government monitor the net in Poland? [38]

Books in a library are signed by authors and publishers are identified.

In some cases, but there are plenty of instances of authors using pen names, anonymous sources, etc.

if participants had to identify themselves with their true name, address and e-mail. Some forums work that way.

I have no fear of identifying myself publicly. I've met quite a few people off of here, and they all pretty much stick to their guns in person, which I fully respect. But on a side note, the only truly FREE SPEECH is anonymous speech. It's the great equalizer. You can then explore why I think the way I do.

Of course, the net is a medium. Anything functioning in public space, whether a magazine, billboard, neon or virtual reality, is, so it differs from a friendly chat in the privacy of one's own home.

This forum is private property. You're a member of a private club. We're in the privacy of our homes, having a chat.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

those are my cons.

So those are good cons for not smoking, I agree...ha, as a non smoker (one week down)!

Now the question is what sort of impact will the law have?

Are you willing to trade smaller pubs and restaurants closing down and more chain places opening up?

Are you ok with legislation targeting private property for health reasons?

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

Nonetheless, the amount of monetary aid (which was in the form of loans) received by Germany through the Marshall Plan (about $1.4 billion in total) was far overshadowed by the amount the Germans had to pay back as war reparations and by the charges the Allies made on the Germans for the ongoing cost of occupation (about $2.4 billion per year).[8] In 1953 it was decided that Germany was to repay $1.1 billion of the aid it had received. The last repayment was made in June 1971.[9]

So basically, Germany received $300m ($2.6b inflation adjusted, €1.8b) throughout the life of the plan.
