Work / Possibly moving to Warsaw- husband offered a job in Warsaw [21]

I'm also registered on elance

No point in workin on elance, you'll always be underbid by some whizkid in India who'll do the work for pittance

Re: cold, yea don't come near here in winter, my first winter I turned into a full-blown alco, we had snow for nearly three months, I was never so depressed in my life, but then spring and summer came and made up for it...I'm not used to four season, where I'm from it's either raining or raining more heavily.

Best of luck

Heather don't bother teaching, set up an account on shutterstock, design graphics and get paid in dollars while living in Poland, you'll earn far more than teaching.

But get started before you come so that your portfolio is already up and running.
Set up yourself as being self-employed in Poland and you'll have to pay your own tax and Zus.....but the good thing is you'll only have to pay a small amount of 'artist's tax' and also the vast majority of freelance design websites pay tax in their home country, i.e shutterstock

I've know two people doing this here and they earn from 7,000-10,000zl per month, but they have huge portfolios on the sites, so get started :)

News / Repost: Heya ad about communism in Poland [36]

I liked the Heyah ad.
Just goes to show that some people are way to shaggin sensitive about certain topics and they've banned it basically because they don't have a sense of humour.

Yes, yes Communism was terrible, blah blah blah #boring, we all know that. But WTF had Lenin got to do with Communism being forced on Poland? Sweat FA, that's what, the man was a long time dead before the Yanks and the Brits betrayed Poland to Stalin (after the thing we shall not mention) and his pesky ways. Sure, jaysus, Stalin wasn't even a proper communist, he was a dictator. Lenin hated Stalin anyway and didn't want him to come to power at all.

#Rantover

Thread was deleted prob because old Greggie tried to do some trolling, but it's OK Mods, I've reposted it now so other PFers can share their views on the idiotic decision to ban a perfectly legitimate ad for a Polish telecommunications company

Life / The unacceptable side of Polish culture [48]

City rock pub on Chorzowska

City rock? Jaysus chap why the fuq would ya go there? Crap food, crap atmosphere. Sure it's not even a pub to be fair.

Mariacka's where it's at.
I wouldn't have gotten involved tho, no way Jose. Call the psy alright, but no way would I ever go into a fight that I've nothing to do with.

I've lived in Kato now for a good while and only ever seen two rows, and one of them was 2 yanks on Patrick's Day a few years ago the other was a riot outside Pomaranca or Lemonada (whichever one is on Mariacka), looked organized tho, group of hooligan lookin lads went at it with the security, I was across the road in Lorneta with a pint looking out on it. Voyeurism is a terrible thing (so I'm led to believe), but seeing a few hools getting the bollix knocked out of them was probably the highlight of that particular Saturday night.

If it doesn't involve you you're better off walking away, no point being a hero just for some false sense of duty that you feel towards others that wouldn't even dream of helping you if the situation was the other way around.

I need a place in Poland

you'll be disappointed, trust me.
Drive over the border to Slovakia, less crowded and there's most places.

Travel / Great places to ski in Poland [16]

but the lifts are ancient, the trails are limited, overcrowded and in poor condition, there's massive long queues to buy lift passes and people queue jumping for lifts is the norm

+1
Go to Austria or Italy, skiing here sucks.

News / PiS wants symmetry for minorites living in Poland [71]

That's coz Poland was given a whole load of German land after WWII that wasn't there's to begin with. Breslau/Wrocław for example.

If the people in these areas speak German then why not have sign posts in German?

Germans don't really need to pay any attention to the Polish minority in Germany.
You said there are 2m Germans in Poland, there are only 1.6m Poles in Germany, making up only 2% of the pop.
Hardly an important voice to listen to when they live in a country of 81m
Turks and Middle Easterns make up the vast majority of immigrants in Germany.

Kaczyński

= xenophobic troll monster.
A man who plays upon the fears and racist tendencies of his target market.
However, that target market is shrinking by the day and luckily the masses do not fall for his nonsense and he hasn't won an election in....what....8 attempts?

Law / You do not need to fit winter tyres according to Polish law. [13]

Sort of. But if you're driving on mainly snow and have a car with very skinny tyres, there is simply no need to have winter tyres

Yea, makes sense. It's the feckin ice that'll get ya.
I had an ancient polo when I started driving here, didn't like the winter, did a full 180 one day and all I wanted to do was slow down. Thankfully road was empty except for a few teenage girls who just pointed and laughed....but sure, jaysus, I was well used to that as a teenager :P

News / Poland, still corrupt, but not as bad as Czech/Hungary & Italy [36]

Well, it kind of states the obvious and everyone living here will know that money in brown envelopes will makes the wheels turn faster in Poland, or having two 50zl notes in your drivers license can get you off with a lot, but it's good to see that it's not as bad as some of our European counterparts.

In business as well, I know it's quite common practice, that if you receive a huge bank loan it's the norm to skim a bit off the top and give it to the bank clerk responsible for getting you the loan.

transparency.org/cpi2012/results

I've paid extra to get bumbed up in a line before and I've handed money to people to get things done faster rather than wait. It's not right but that's just the way it is here, any of you got any stories of partaking in corrupt behaviour?

Law / You do not need to fit winter tyres according to Polish law. [13]

Depends where and what you're driving.

Well, I would presume that most land rovers and their ilk would come fitted with all-purpose, all weather tyres.
But for the majority of us, it's something we simply have to do to avoid smashing into some babcia listeing to the 'cardinal' in her crappy maluch

News / In Bialystok, the mayor has now openly said he would like to lobby for ONR (National Radical Camp) [22]

a great comment can be found under the Guardian article.

You cannot blame a neolib/nationalist conspiracy for the decline and dumbing-down of a lefty magazine. The magazine messed up and/or failed to appeal to their audience and have themselves to blame.
And the rest of the article is pretty sketchy, too.
For example, the Guardian's Polish sister paper, Gazeta Wyborcza, is a gigantic left-wing institution, and arguably the most influential media outlet in Poland. Hardly a case of the left being silenced.
And Solidarity today is hardly a left-wing movement as understood in the UK, it is rather a national conservative or Catholic socialist movement, which wants to protect unionised jobs with the same self-interest as a neocon would want to protect crony tycoons' jobs. And by the way, it wants Poland to continue mining for very dirty brown coal, because it is putting heavy industry jobs ahead of green-left issues. No self-professed British lefty would take today's Solidarity at face value.

I would tend to agree with this.
I also agree that the whole ONR & MW thing is quite worrying. Scary in fact, but the first article is very unbalanced and not in any way objective journalism.

I cannot see the far-right gaining any more power in Poland than in any other central European country. They will remain on the fringes and when it comes to elections, the silent majority will not vote for them...............I hope.

Travel / KRAKOW, Where to meet young people? (18-22 yrs) [17]

sort of experience then the harcerze are not for you

Yea right, scouts are usually run by creepy guys who live at home with their cats and mothers even though they are in their 40s or 50. Chairman Jaro would prob be a scout master if he hadn't stumbled into politics. No self-respecting youth would join the scouts. C'mon, an organised group where the leader wears shorts and white socks. No way jose. Scouts is related far to closely to the church for my liking, just don't trust them and would never trust them with my kids.

As for the other thing, a whole load of hormonal teenage boys playing soldiers. I bet they get all the ladies :P

Love / Need some advice on Polish wedding (after our baby is born?) [5]

Look at it like this, is you have the wedding while she's pregger she'll have no banter and won't be able to have a drink, she'll have no fun man. Wait till the baby's born, even wait a few months until the breast feeding has stopped and then have it. What's the rush, sure you're already married in a civil ceremony anyway.

The Scouts! HAhahahaha. "Oh yea, please I'd love to be molested..."
....whole load of men running around in shorts and going camping? No thanks

Strzelcy

Sausage-fest. Why you have have the wimminz?

OP, go to a pub, talk to people, simple.
Or join a class of some sort. Something women like so you'll get the odd ride. Art classes or some other crap like that.

Form a band, chick dig bands. If you don't play an instrument, buy a crappy bass guitar, any clown can play bass, it's easy.

Life / did/does Polish TV show any British Sitcoms? [35]

Smurf, that show was hilarious;have you ever watched it?

Course I watched it, it was about a dirty old man who chased after bimbos in sexy underwear. It was on for 30mins every saturday evening.

Not funny in any way.
Redneck humour imo

Oh and Father Ted isn't british :P

They don't show anything modern, just all that MOR crap like My Family/ 'Allo Allo

Would love to see some brit stand-up comedy on tele, really miss that about living here, no stand-up at all, just incredibly tame caberet, full of mother-in-law jokes and guys falling over.

News / Stiffer traffic rules in Poland? [32]

You would be suprised the number of people on the phone while driving here in Warsaw, I have hands free built in on my car and it sings a merry song when the seat belt is not clipped, so I am conditioned.

Same down where I am, really grinds my gears to see idiots on their phone. Those sticky things I linked to are only 20zl and they could save your life.

No action by the govt or police to tackle the problem either.

I'm starting to see a pattern here that the Polish govt & civil service don't really give a rat's arse about the people living here.

News / Stiffer traffic rules in Poland? [32]

he only thing that will put a stop to it is severe, severe punishments.

I agree, but not about prison. They'd become overcrowded and people would be let out early.
Hit them in their pockets.
huge fines, 50,000zl or something like that. Cripple people with debt for a few years. Lifetime ban on driving too.

News / Stiffer traffic rules in Poland? [32]

Horrible things. I'm all for enforcement, but average speed cameras are horrible, horrible things that serve no purpose whatsoever. I think we can all agree that doing 110km/h on a straight, empty road doesn't hurt anyone.

Well, since it's on the highway the limit is 130km :P
So they'd only be going after you if you're shown to be breaking that.

I wouldn't mind it to be honest, I think I'm like you, I drive about 10-15 faster than I should in urban areas, but on the highway 130 is plenty fast for me.

I suppose I mostly leave for a trip early and give myself plenty of time to get somewhere.

Drink driving is the main cause of accidents in Poland.

+1 this is the single major problem and nobody is doing anything to even attempt to curb it. Shameful so it is.

When in Rome,

I live here too chap and I don't want you to kill me coz you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder over they way other drivers have treated you, I've not treated you bad, why drive like a douchebag when around normal drivers y'know? I've had one bad road rage incident here, learned my lesson, I've got a camera on my dashboard now and a can of pepper spray in the glove compartment.

The first one has been installed in Poland, it can calculate multiple cars, catch people on their mobile phone and without a seat belt. It is on the junction of ul Sikorskiego and ul Sobieskeiego in Warsaw. Gives out on average 1,500 tickets a day

I've no problem with this at all. You're obviously a d!ck if you don't wear a seatbelt, same goes for being on the phone. Every phone has a speaker, just buy one of these and use the speaker if you get a call.

But 100% with you on the drink driving, can't get my head around the fact that it's so acceptable here. Life-ban is what I'd be giving people if I was a judge.
