Life / Best Polish production TV show [12]

The best one is 'Spadkobiercy' - if you can understand it, you will pee yourself laughing.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

pawian-
>>>>Come on. Don`t you think it would be nice if you refreshed your perception before providing outdated or even false info?

Just for your information, my perception of POland is bang on. I bought a flat in Poland 10 years ago, in the centre of Krakow and since then I visited every year for approx 3 months, and since I am now retired will visit for at least 6 months a year, so you could say that my information is current.

.
The fact that I was perhaps unaware of the services which I suggested and which you so kindly pointed out already exist, can ONLY MEAN one thing and that is that they are not advertised enough for a 'man/woman in the street' to know about them. Not everyone is as savvy with IT - (read - has an internet connection at home).

Just out of interest what is your connection with Poland, do you live there?

If so, then perhaps you would be in the best place to suggest to prospective entrepreneurs what kind of business is likely to succeed in Poland. I cannot believe that all avenues for new businesses are now closed. Sometimes even the simplest can be most successful.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

>>terri: I have thought of another service which may be needed in Poland - bespoke / made to measure ...shoes, suits, dresses.
>>Ever heard of "krawiec" or "szewc"?
...yes, I have, but in Krakow I have maybe seen one shewc willing to make made-to-measure shoes.

>>>terri: Also I have never seen a window-cleaner for private residences. I think there is something in this - as cleaning windows from the outside

....You can clean Polish windows on both sides from the inside of your home. They open into the room. But wait, even so many people earn their living by cleaning other people's homes, including their windows.

...You assume a lot. Not every window can be cleaned from the outside. I actually have windows which I cannot clean from the inside and would appreciate the services of a window-cleaner.

>>>>Have you ever actually been to Poland?
...yes, I spend approx. 4 months a year in Krakow...every year

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

I have thought of another service which may be needed in Poland - bespoke / made to measure ...shoes, suits, dresses. Some people would pay good money to have made to measure nice leather shoes, same as suits for unusually shaped ladies and gents. Just an idea.

Also I have never seen a window-cleaner for private residences. I think there is something in this - as cleaning windows from the outside is for some people a bit of a bind and a firm equipped with lifting equipment might just be needed.

Law / Recovering amount paid to ZUS after leaving POLAND [9]

NO chance whatsoever of recovering a penny/zloty paid into ZUS. For confirmation ask any ZUS office. The money has gone in the same way that in England, the money you pay for National Insurance goes, once you leave the country. Obviously if you have paid enough years in, you may be entitled to a pension when you retire - but that is all.

As for ZUS - look on their web pages, ask people - but NO.

If a sandwich shop is unlikely to be the next best thing in Poland,(outside of Warsaw) then maybe services such as mobile hairdressers, nail technicians might be an option.

I'm coming round to thinking that a good sandwich shop is exactly what's needed and where an opportunity for a new business might lie.

Sandwiches, such as the ones which you get at Krakow airport - could be made much better and much more enjoyable and healthy.
By the way they have just gone up from 7.50 to 9PLN for 2 slices of bread and 2 slivers of ham, or egg majo. If you were selling them for 5PLN you would still make a profit. These can also be sold on a mobile basis to large firms or near Rynek or anywhere where there are people willing to buy.

Law / How the hell this Poland's ZUS is calculated? [5]

Complications arise as you have to know what type of contract you have.
I believe personal allowance (koszty uzyskania przychodu) is about 120 PLN per month - you pay on the rest.

I have tried the calculator given above.
Basically, if you earn 10,000 per month (gross) , you get 7,000 take home (net)
Put your gross salary in the calculation and you can get an idea of how much you will pay.

In Krakow -
Re Laudrettes - I have used the one on Dietla/Starowislna since they opened. They used to be on Wrzesinska - where I used them for at least 5 years. There is also another laundrette on Dietla. The Starowislna is always busy - students, locals, visitors and they have a bar where you can have a hot/cold and alcoholic drinks. Brilliant idea.

As for sandwich shops/bars - I have recently seen 2 shops offering take-away home-made pierogis, golabki and other delicacies which you can buy to cook at home.

There is perhaps an idea that not many have thought of - and that is a 'mobile' shop selling say fresh vegetables, potatoes, tins of this and that. Older people especially might be willing to buy from 'the back of a van', if it was parked nearby rather than for people to struggle and walk to the nearest outdoor markets.

In the same way, a vegetable shop or a bakery could offer a delivery service.

Life / The Killing--tv show where Agnieszka Holland and Polish mafia is involved [10]

It all started with the Danish version. They have brought in other shows as well. The next Killing is already being filmed, and although the Danish version is subtitled, it is the best thing on British TV by a long shot. The Killing is winning awards left, right and centre.

Life / Poles always ask how much money you earn. Why do they do this? [30]

oh really ??? fcuk off with this generalization. If you want to find real gentelman in Poland you should firstly be a lady.

a person who attacks another one (p[ersonally) has already lost the argument.
There is an old Polish saying: Zastaw sie a postaw sie - meaning 'even if you go in hock show off'-

Telling someone how much you earn is not a reflection on you as a person i.e. a person who earns 2k is 'worth less' as a person who earns '10k'. The worth of a person is not measured by the amount of money he/she earns. But tell that to someone in Poland.+

Life / Poles always ask how much money you earn. Why do they do this? [30]

The best answer when somebody asks is to say:
I get exactly what I am worth- no more, no less.

Funny, though, when I was working in Poland in 1994-1996, and I tell people how much gross I was earning they all assume I was working 'on the streets'...but I wasn't and I have the records to prove it.

Poles do not want anyone else to be better off then they are and that's why they will even borrow money just to show off.

Study / Studying Polish in Poland for a Polish Citizen [7]

what I would do in your position is to study either by yourself or with a tutor (one to one) until such time as you are ready to take an exam, which will give you the piece of paper that you want.

I'm surprised though, that you cannot study Polish in US and get a 'Matura' there.

Study / Studying Polish in Poland for a Polish Citizen [7]

There are a lot of private turors who could teach you Polish, look on any website.
Official classes for 'foreigners' are expensive - find a good tutor for one-to-one lessons.

Work / Does it have sense to get TESOL for a non natve english speaker in Poland? [9]

>no i dont have accent, so without those certificateS,maybe only find low salary english teaching job?
...NO, you will not find ANY jobs, as there are people better qualified than you, speak the local language and have teaching experience.

>do u think of idea to go to polish uni to study english
...good idead

> do they offer some internship like teaching in some school?
...I have absolutely no idea, you would have to get in touch with the Universities and ask.

>give 'u' (when you have intentions of becoming a teacher, the first thing is to write in acceptable English, not 'u' but' you'....I know that there are places that offer TESOL, CELTA, DELTA

>TESOL, 'compared to get' (please write in English and not make so many stupid mistakes, otherwise no one will take you seriously) CELTA or TESOL,which one is better?

...First of all, find out what TESOL is, then what CELTA and then DELTA are and where you can study them.
Even after obtaining a certificate, you will have to prove yourself in the marketplace. It is not an automatic right to a job, especially when there are highly qualified native teachers searching for jobs.

You will have to ask yourself: What have I got to offer a prospective pupil which no other teacher has?

Work / Does it have sense to get TESOL for a non natve english speaker in Poland? [9]

Getting qualifications always makes sense.
You will have to consider how good a speaker of English you are, do you have a strong accent? There are many non-native speakers of English who have taught and continue to teach in Poland and the Far East. P.s. Do not get a mickey mouse qualification - get one from the recognised boards.

Law / Canadian born looking for help obtaining a Polish Passport [7]

In Poland it takes 3 months, need document ID card Polish, town of birth.

Don't make me laugh. I was born in Krakow, Poland from Polish parents/grandparents and it took me 2 cases in court and finally I gave up. To this day, I do not have a Polish citizenship and cannot get a dowod or a Polish passport. Maybe you have some secret influence with those in the know....

Genealogy / My great grandmother's surname? Kiela? [8]

z Kielow - this is a perfectly normal form to indicate that the lady came originally from the house of Kiela. This form remains until today, many times in funeral notices you see this form.

IN England, we used to indicate ...'nee', for a young lady i.e. her former surname

Real Estate / Problems with recent inheritence in Poznan [3]

This is going to be difficult because as an elderly person she has rights because of this, i.e. you cannot ask her to leave during the winter months.

Also if you want to kick her out, you will have to provide her with another place which she can rent of you.
Tell her that you need to carry out repairs on the property and she needs to move out.
You will have to make sure who is in the 'ksiaga wieczysta' - title deeds. If she is not - she doesn't stand a chance.

Get the police - and get her out.
I cannot believe that a few strapping lads cannot encourage a dear old lady to leave the premises.
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about all the items that have disappeared.
My advice is to get a few strapping lads and encourage her to leave - this is the only way - even if she has to be escorted out of the premises and be left outside on the pavement. When she takes you to court (which she will not do) it will take years before she has any rights. This is the only way.
