Cambridge University accept this:

''Polish Matura
Our standard offer requires a certified pass in... ''

i'll go by wot they say, ok

did it not occur to anyone that it's a new word, translation, equivalent, whatever in English.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

"behaviour grades" - but someone who wants to cause trouble is hardly going to be affected by that.

some are when they have to repeat a school year.

but usually the teacher gives way at the end of term in order to get rid of the pupil.

i don't think there is too much dumbing down in schools. in university, yes.

the school exam system is always going through change, which may make it seem like dumbing down.

USA, Canada / US citizenship via US Army [50]

In fact the USA is one of few countries that that faced so few attacks on their soil. Two, to be exact.

i'm not sure that i understand this.

i can think of two separate attacks on the world trade centre.

News / Juwenalia - holidays for students in Poland (updated) [20]

Anyways I want to know more about Juwenalia. Who can share something? I'm particularly interested in the bad (for some reason, just to compare to our "schoolies").

juwenalia in wroclaw doesn't seem to get the bigger names anymore.

majowka has taken over in that respect.

however, it takes place just across the road from me. if i like it i open the window to hear more. if i don't like it i close the window. this year i think the window will be closed most of the time.

News / Row over status of Poles in Germany sours relations [176]

Poles are not concentrated anywhere in Germany - there is no call for schools with Polish language as far as I know

my youngest daughter was in a Polish school in berlin.

Travel / Traveling From Warsaw to Berlin - train? [25]

But I still don't if this train is EC or ICE.

it doesn't matter. u will have to be one of the first on the train in order to find space for your luggage.

do we have ICE in Poland ? i thought it was german.

Travel / Traveling From Warsaw to Berlin - train? [25]

I have a big luggage with 30 KG to 40 KG

that's quite heavy, but how do we know the size.

they don't count suitcases, etc so u should be ok with whatever it is.

Life / Did you see John Porter on Kuba Wojewódski [5]

i found the other guests more interesting :)

kuba always has the same opening line with foreign folk speaking Polish.

john was at ease and at times led the conversation.

News / Row over status of Poles in Germany sours relations [176]

In particular, Lewicki laments the lack of access in many German states to Polish-language courses for children of Polish descent.

do the Polish people, with kids, lament the lack of access ?

i think not. most of the folk i know in berlin have their kids in german schools for a reason.

in berlin there is a school for Polish kids, but it works under a different system. it is only there for kids to pass the matura. some kids who have a chance to go there... don't.

the reality is that most kids will stay on in germany and will never need Polish other than to talk to rellies.

it's not 1991 anymore. the rules have changed

Returing from a trip to Kraków, noone refers to having seen the 'Fabric Halls', but instead, to the Sukiennica, UNTRANSLATED!

i thought it was 'cloth market'

News / Grafitti plague in Warsaw [84]

i'd just like to say this:

when the berlin wall was up i used to take little tour groups of colleagues along a particular section. most important was knowing where to by a can of spray paint. such was the demand for this paint that it was often sold in mini-cans, handbag size.

i remember at this time a james bond movie being made and a hundred meter stretch of the wall was painted white. oh how some people complained. not because a film was being made, but because the grafitti had been wiped out.

some of the best and most humourous grafitti i've seen appeared on that wall. and much of it came from folk who in their own city or country would never have put up with such a thing.

rightly or wrongly i'm quite happy to have written on the wall.

News / Grafitti plague in Warsaw [84]

There is really a lot of grafitti in the city, practically every building is sprayed.

some parts of wroclaw have a similar problem.

but it is not grafitti as such. just mindless tagging.

if something is not done to stop it visitors will have a dim view come euro 2012

also, wroclaw is going for 'city of culture' in 2016. the city should look a right dump by then.

This thread is a trap anyway.

no. it just shows one of the little differences in Polish culture.
