Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

it sounds like the parents aren't really caring about the "life lessons" part of the school but just what grade they are getting,

In Poland, often yes.

News / Two Polish Men on trial for brutally murdering German Pop Star in homophobic attack [53]

I know the internet can be a dark place, but it is still hard for me to accept that someone could leave a comment like this.

Yes. The lowest of the low really, however there are some strange and troubled people in this world, ones who would go to the trouble of writing something like that. It makes you wonder what sort of stone some people have crawled from under.

Travel / Milk Bars in Warsaw's Old Town [18]

Is there such a thing as a safe, clean, and family-friendly milk bar in or near Warsaw's old town?

Yes. There are a few around the centre. In the Old Town, there's a decent one (in the bit called the New Town) just north of the Barbican - you can't miss it. There are also some others spread around town.

Bambino

That's good, however yes, there are often queues. Familijny on Nowy Swiat is ok, very authentic, as is Zlote Kurki on ul Marszalkowska.

I'd prefer not to get a stomach bug, food poisoning, or be attacked or harassed for money by a group of drunken bums.

That doesn't happen in Bary Mleczny. About the drunken bums, you will see plenty of these begging in Warsaw anyway. Occasionally standing outside a Bar Mleczny but rarely hassling people inside.

They do come into cafes though, even nice ones.

News / Polish rock band 'Decapitated' accused of kidnapping and raping woman [16]

It's all over the US news too. Hardly obscure.

There are really only two possibilities. Either (as she seems to be alleging) they detained (the media says abducted/kidnapped) her and gang raped her. Or the other possibility which is that they didn't detain her and didn't gang rape her.

The band evidently deny this whereas, she has presumably made a formal allegation (in the UK she wouldn't have made her full statement yet, just an allegation recorded by the police - in the US it may be different).

Is there CCTV, forensic evidence or an eyewitness who can confirm her story or vindicate the band? If there is, it will be under scrutiny now and there will doubtless be press releases from police or lawyers.

Does she have a motive for lying? Only she knows. I don't know if 'Decapitated' are rich and famous, however I suspect they aren't. Does it matter? No, because their tour organiser probably is.

There will be plenty in the media about this.

News / Polish rock band 'Decapitated' accused of kidnapping and raping woman [16]

When it's a news headline relating to a Polish rock group, probably yes.

Perhaps you prefer that topics relating to Poland weren't discussed on a forum about such matters.

Anyway, they're currently being extradited to the jurisdiction where the alleged kidnapping and gang rape occurred. I hope they're innocent, since that would mean a woman wasn't kidnapped or gang raped. If indeed she was, they should feel the full force of the law.

Food / Mushroom picking (and eating:) in Poland [36]

This has been the best mushroom season in Poland for many years.

I wonder if it will carry on like last year. A friend (who does it for a living) was picking into November, a very rare thing.

men should be responsible for women actions.

More being responsible for not abducting women. If they're innocent, they'll be acquitted, if not, they won't.

The laws in both countries are pretty well the same.

an excessive use of force by the police

Let the courts decide if the police used reasonable force or not.

Unless you insist that Denmark is not a civilized country

The police are generally excellent, and doubtless anyone who has a valid claim against them will be able to be heard, with all evidence presented, not just your crappy youtube video.

Obviously Ironside doesn't like it when Polish "patriots" get a taste of their own medicine.

Evidently.

how serious it is to have acess to power in a bathroom.

Appallingly serious to have standard sockets in bathrooms.

should have kept my gob shut.

That's the last thing you should do. I'd rather annoy one person than see another in a coffin. Health and safety is a collective responsibility.

brutally attacked

The Danish police aren't known for brutality - far from it. Perhaps there was a reason for them to use force.

the Poland 'fan' who ... later turned out to have an extensive criminal record and a picture of Adolf Hitler tattooed

I wonder what that reason might have been...

"Michal Mikolai Lysejko, 27; Waclaw Jan Kieltyka, 35; Rafal Tomasz Piotrowski, 31; and Hubert Edward Wiecek, 30, are being held Monday without bail at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Inmate Reception Center downtown as they await extradition back to Washington state."

They are maintaining their innocence.

Yes, I thought twice, however it needed saying, especially when lives are lost. No room for tact, no room for hurt feelings - better to offend someone than attend a child's funeral.

Everywhere has room to learn something from somewhere else, and somewhere that has electrical sockets in bathrooms, plug sockets coming off walls and basically relies on a mix of luck and

young children should be supervised.

which of course they always, but always, are, absolutely without exception by entirely unfeckless and sober adults.

If he doesn't feel safe, he should have it changed - simple as that.

It isn't about him feeling unsafe, it's about electrical installation in Poland being unsafe.

Also, young children should be supervised.

Your 'should be' does little to stop fatal accidents. Electrical safety does.

How do you know it is not safe

Because the 'Polish way' is always right, safe electricity in the bathrooms, safe drivers on the roads, safe doctors who are never ever drunk. All those darn statistics must all be wrong.

Polonia / Vanguard Polonia - Game Changing Breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data [6]

Mine gets quite a lot of it wrong, basically most of what Kosinski says he can predict, things like subject of academic studies, political views, religious views, sexuality and sporting interests.

It seems there's a long way to go before his ideas are accepted or useful. Perhaps he should stick to Artificial Intuition, something of most interest to companies operating in financial markets, or to political parties.

You need some common sense and imagination.

Which not everybody has, hence proper health and safety requirements.

As for young kids, you shouldn't let them play or stay alone in the bathroom for . long time.

Therefore remove the risk.

Polonia / Vanguard Polonia - Game Changing Breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data [6]

He also suggests he can use the same software to predict extreme political leanings and personality disorders like psychopathy etc. He has some very interesting ideas and is particularly interested in the work of Cambridge Analytica. The most interesting of the things he does dovetails with some of the research that is happening on Artificial Intuition, which is about mass analysis of data in order to predict trends, financial market movements and possibly geopolitical change.

Some of it, like the sexuality and the political thing are of little use - the Artificial Intuition however is something we will be seeing more of in the future.

The articles are from this year there are loads of this type of accident, no need for it.

Also a risk from electrical fires, especially in areas with wooden housing and faulty wiring.

That is a particularly silly comment.

Would you have your daughter genitally mutilated?. Probably you wouldn't. Would you throw a bucket of water on her "when there's fire"? Probably you would.

There's a reason this wanton act of destruction by the bad change government is universally condemned.

left alone

Yes. This is the key. Not many left in Europe, and the bad change government is hell-bent on destroying the best one. This will be their legacy.

Once you introduce the industrial hand of humans, with their logging machines and chainsaws, you end the natural processes and the long uninterrupted line of natural selection.

And the degradation never stops.

This actually means that Lukashenko, a Belorussian dictator, is in this respect a much wiser man than the whole bunch of 'dobra zmiana' clowns.

Exactly - it's virgin forest, a delicate ecosystem. Less is more.

Once a forest starts to degrade, the damage continues.

Work / 13000 zloty salary enough to save 9000 zloty with normal living in Poland? [37]

You should plan for rent being at the top end of that range, but utilities being lower. The rest is doable, however food might be a little more, depending on how you live. Some items will be cheaper than you expect, and some things will be dearer. Biedronka (a supermarket chain) is a good place to shop - it isn't expensive and the quality is good.

You'll need to pay ZUS (social and health insurance) if you're on a normal contract of employment. Use this tool to calculate the difference between gross and net salary (you'll probably need to put it through google translate:

money.pl/podatki/kalkulatory/plac

Aboout your wife's tax allowance, you should check with colleagues who have foreign spouses when it's time to make your annual tax return, however your HR department will deduct the normal tax from the start.

Work / PAT testing electrical equipment in Poland [51]

I used to rent a flat, rather a posh one near ul. Belwederska, one built in the early 90s. It had a small second bathroom where the washing machine was. Aside from the washing machine socket, there was another one. It never worked. One day, we checked it to see if there was a wire loose.

Imagine our surprise when we found out that there was nothing behind the socket, no wires, no hole for cables, no nothing. It was a decorative socket.
