UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

But Poles would still emigrate to Germany and the US. The destination would change but nothing else.

You're probably right. Some Poles I know of are actively planning on going to work in Canada and Aus.

FWIW I think Camoron is just playing to the UKIP crowd to steal their voters for 2015. Personally, I think the UK should leave the EU, but I can't see it happening unless UKIP get power.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

Do you know the area? does it still have a bottle neck traffic problem near the racecourse, when you turn off or onto ? that was definitely a negative.

Yes it does, and now or recently there are roadworks nearby still. Chaos at times. Also just 2 buses - 113 and 612 which are fairly infrequent.

about 1,100,000 PLN i should think.

900K perhaps
taakidom.pl/adv/show/sprzedam/dom/dolnoslaskie/2724045.html

But does that not suggest a bubble? Or have incomes increased 2.5x since 2006? Some would argue it was already expensive in 2006 ay 350K when Polish salaries were something like 6K a year on average I estimate. Where does it end if salaries don't keep up?

Law / Value of Zloty and UK £ in Poland [21]

money.pl/pieniadze/forex/waluty/forex,gbppln.html

Now the GBP is around 4.87PLN -- been dropping this week again.

Last year GBP dropped as low as around 4.16PLN if my memory serves me.

I think GBP has weakened because the UK CB talk about more money printing and cutting IRs further from the already low 0.50 (yes you read that correctly)

Whether they do or are just bluffing to race GBP to the bottom we can debate, but trashing the pound is causing inflation there.

What caused the UK pound to lose value against the Polish zloty yesterday afternoon, while the pound still continued to gain ground against the US dollar?

Or was it merely the dollar weakening following the very much expected (by me) no tapering announcement from Helicopter Ben?

Here, they say the pound is up following various bullish mutterings by the UK central bank.

Yet at around about the same time, GBP lost 10 groszy against PLN, falling from about 5.06 to 4.96 (and has since fallen further).

What powered PLN up to cause this loss of ground by GBP against PLN?

PLN is now a stronger currency -v- GBP than USD because Ben didn't taper?! :D

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

That is ok. But I wouldn't take any real estate advice on those claiming there is a bubble.

Despite the fact they have already been correct in some cities?

As I see it, the only questionmark now is whether the NBP will do a Mervyn King '05 plus QE plus open more foreign factories which will need housing for imported staff

It was nothing that we could touch. feel, smell or taste. People made millions on the idea of an idea that never panned out.Real estate is something that we can see. It is not an ideal comparison.

Oh boy, if I had a pound for every time I've heard that! :o) The people in the US who saw prices plummet, ditto places in Eire when I was there in 2007, they all said that too.

UK, Ireland / Why are Brits so left-wing? [60]

They are, I agree. That said, the immigration to the UK does now have to be properly reduced as there is a housing and resources shortage. If that sounds like I am contradicting myself I shall have to admit maybe I am, but there is quite a strain on things over there and that is boosting some of the beasties that usually don't get much of a voice over there.

UK, Ireland / Why are Brits so left-wing? [60]

Most British people I've spoken to are pretty left-wing politically. They all seem to be pro-gay rights, pro diversity, non-religious and extremely proud of their country being multicultural.

I'm probably all those things, but without consciously gving myself any political label.

I can't think of many people I've known in the UK who would admit to being homophobic, racist, anti diversity or the like. I like to think the numbers are very few anyway.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

Pip, it may interest you to know that during the dotcom bubble, each time shares fell it was called "A healthy correction" by the so-called experts, who added "It's not a bubble, it's a gentle decline to blow the froth off the market." The rest is history.

The only question in my mind is whether or not the NBP's rate cuts will put a floor in. Probably I'm wrong to draw parallels, but once the UK govt cut rates in 2005, property prices which had been falling took off again, big time.

Real Estate / Best and worst months of the year to find a flat to rent in Poland? [39]

Probably agents looking for sub contract deals aswell.

Yes, I know agents do bother private landlords and try to act as middleman. Thanks for the tip, I will check it out.

...Although not buoyant for all landlords --- not a bad one reduced from 1400PLN or 1450PLN a month to 1000PLN a month today. Not quite where I want to live, but will be a good deal for somebody.

They have put the price back up now -- to 1400. Must have had a flood of interest and decided to revert to 1400.

165 have looked at this one in just 1 day ... Definitely more people are looking now. Is it because they're not buying property now, or simply moving into Wroc or around Wroc suddenly?

Supply seems to be quite reduced, rents seem to be up by about 10-15% on December. Some of the unrealistically priced stuff is sticking and unlet for weeks. However, looks like most of what I go for is already let unless jumped on the same day or so. People pricing a studio flat as a 2-room get left with it, as do those who have not bothered to refurbish/remodel the interior to a fair standard -- but apart from those clueless types, fair priced flats in the popular areas are let let let. Not good news for me, at all. :o(

More flats are coming on to the market now, rents are moderating somewhat. Seems there was a surge of applicants which has now tapered off, and the supply of flats has improved and it seems the first buds of (relative) realism are reappearing in the asking rent price. Of course, many rents are still massively over-priced for local wages if you look at them through a sober lens.

Do bots select some ads and not others? Other lets don't get anywhere near that amount of hits. That flat of course is now let and deleted. Each day until yesterday it got 50 hits approx. In the first 1 or 2 days it got over 400.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

Apple share are vastly inflated, a bubble asset. They have fallen 35% in a few months. A more over inflated, over hyped company, short of facebook, you won't find.

I was astounded when I discovered how much Apple shares had been worth. They became bigger by market cap than MS didn't they?! Like the dotcom tech mess all over again. Samsing are hot on the heels, and pretty much mainly on the back of semi-cond sales and probably the Galaxy have done gob-smackingly well.

The prices were hugely inflated in the first place

But, Pip, 'hugely inflated' as you very honestly put it, sounds bubble-like, does it not? :o)

EXACTLY!!!

But he's suggesting that it was indeed a bubble, Pip:

Adjusting for inflation, Polish property prices have fallen by 40% since 2008. Quite a remarkable 'deflation' and arguably a pop

Over 100% price rises followed by a 50% fall is a bubble.

I would've thought that if it's as you say then it was or is a bubble, not sure why Pip wants to split hairs on that.

Life / Why in Poland most people use cloth sponge to wipe off windscreen? [23]

Some convenience stores as some people tend to leave cars running to go get a quick bite or some sit in the parking lot reading, sipping coffee smoking or scratching lottery tickets in a running car.(running I mean is a started car).just came in mind its called idling! there are signs everywhere "NO IDLING"

With the price of fuel such as it is, these drivers must literally have money to burn.

Real Estate / Best and worst months of the year to find a flat to rent in Poland? [39]

I think the standard advice is that landlords drop their rent prices in the colder months as they fear the bills.

What about now, January?

Pretty much every flat I have viewed or enquired after is let (rented to someone else).

I have found 8/10 let within a day or two of the ad going on Gumtree. For various reasons, I can't always view the same day the ad goes up. And a couple of others that have been hanging around for weeks have all let since Sunday, all of a sudden, one of them apparently half an hour after I viewed it and had gone home to await hearing from the landlord.

What months are best for tenants - ie the most choice and best prices? And worst?

One other thing: if I rent a flat and get a written tenancy agreement, that is all I need to register my address and get a PESEL isn't it? I just take the agreement to the local government office and they give me a form then process my PESEL, right? Or do I need the landlord to sign some additional paperwork?

There would appear to suddenly be so many prospective tenants, that even 2 room flats listed 4 hours ago (ie 2am) have 15 views already on Gumtree.

What's happened I wonder? Is January the month when people move into big cities like this one, causing sudden pressure on available flats? Is it a traditional new year/new start thing here? In the UK, the rental market remains fairly quiet until March.

Another flat I was after off Ul Powstancow has had 460 (yes four hundred and sixty) page hits or views between Sunday 6pm and this morning. On Sunday, it had 20 views by the time I read it. I phoned 10am to view it yesterday but was told it had been reserved since Monday.

Probably in case the handbrake or other brake slips and the car rolls forward, or a child or unlicensed driver or thief tries to jump in and drive off, and because of the pollution build up.

Yeah, just read your link. Just goes to show how determined some burglars can be!

That's just one of the tricks in their repertoire!

Never heard of this! Why would a criminal think car keys would just be

It's a regular problem, started about 10 years ago, happens regularly. My friend keeps his car keys on a shelf near the front door, despite the fact his neighbour lost their Merc in exactly the same manner. And by the way, the insurance premiums in that area all went up after the thief with the stick struck.

Of course, it is natural.

Of course, in the UK people get carjacked now sometimes - at traffic lights or other stopping points, criminals try to get into cars and wrestle the driver out. They also like to hook car keys out through the letterbox flap in the front door of many British houses with a long stick or rod (notice I didn't say with a long pole!)

Not allowed in the UK either

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1231460/Drivers-leave-engines-running-clear-screens-face-fines-idling-offence-rules.html

Also, insurers tend to protest if your car is stolen with the keys in the ignition while you are not in the driving seat.
