News / IS Poland prepared for what is coming during the Euro 2012? [10]

I am not talking hooliganism but I'm talking the sheer numbers of people on the streets.

i don't think it will be too bad. the germans will probably watch the game, jump in the car or on a train and go home. as might the fans from other nearby countries. plus, the stadiums are small anyway.

Life / Observation of Polish drivers, by and English anthropologist. [94]

Trees and forests are nice.

indeed they are, but at the end of the day a tree is just a tree and i don't like to think that a car may be wrapped around it.

when the millenium bridge was built here in wroclaw there was an outcry because a number of trees had to be cut down. this in the greenest city in Poland.

if roads are to be built then they should be built with an understanding of future traffic flow and safety. that means wider roads and no fcuking trees.

And I also wonder if charity can be a business as well, I mean something you can earn money for life?

USA, Canada / U.S. Citizen to Study in Poland on U.S. Passport for Over 3 Months? Problems? [46]

no it wouldn't. he doesn't have any documents that show him being a Polish citizen. and border control aren't just going to take his word for it.

if the birth isn't registered in Poland then how can he be Polish.

his status simply makes it easier to aquire citizenship.

the OP already knows that he has all the rights of an american and none of the extras that come along with being a Pole, even when in Poland. or am i missing the point of the thread.

USA, Canada / U.S. Citizen to Study in Poland on U.S. Passport for Over 3 Months? Problems? [46]

My program is going to Ukraine anyways, so it's worth a try. According to the Jagiellonian University, even if I have Polish citizenship by blood, if I have no way of documenting it then it's worthless--especially since I will be forced to enter the country on a U.S. Passport.

i would have thought this was obvious.

the way things are at the moment u are american. no amount of arguing or history will change it. just because u can claim citizenship does not make u a citizen and therefore... u are still a foreigner.

as it is: i wouldn't bother going to ukraine, especially if it's only a short trip.

whatever u do it is better to set things in motion as soon as possible. once the paperwork is in and on the computer you'll make your position more secure.

having a Polish passport will give u benefits for as long as u care to use it. once u get back home u can go back to being american. u will lose nothing.

Life / How Safe Are the Polish Cities? [179]

but in the dark and especially in the suburbs, stranger beware.

a lot of people are buying the more expensive range of cameras these days and they are becoming a target here in wroclaw.

Law / T-Mobile replaces Era [21]

a lot of people would try to show off with stupid crap like a cell phone, especially in Poland.

not really. just about everyone has one.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

The basic level:

it looks easy, but i know that for some it can be both stressful and difficult.

i do feel that the oral exam should demand more from the student though.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

I know from extensive experience that there are some elements of the tenses that Polish teachers don't project so well.

i've found the same.

but the ins and outs are another subject.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

So how would you check people's writing skills? Style, grammar etc?

first of all.
as i understand things the modern exam doesn't show a name at the top of the paper and the paper is marked by a teacher other than the pupils class teacher.

off the top of my head. i might ask questions about writing/grammar in the oral exam. i'd also make the written task longer.

written exams give a choice of three or four topics. to check vocabulary/grammar etc i'd have to take into consideration course work.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

most of my knowledge about this is from years ago when the Matura was thrown together.
if teachers can't consult each other for a given alternative then there is something very wrong.

i do remember a school here where most students got 6 in english. the head teacher came along, said a few things and the results were changed.

marking the essay is/was open to abuse. same for the oral.

i could tell u some real horror stories about the oral exam, but won't.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

I wouldn't say 'sor()ry' to anyone visibly older than me -

u must be in your 80's then. plenty people older than me use it and i'm 50+

older folk learn from their kids sometimes.

it is safer to go around saying przepraszam

i use both, but u are right.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

(for example "Matura" from Polish this year has at least two mistakes).

nothing unusual there.

Sometimes you answers is good but doesn't have a word or phrase that is in "Key" and you recive 0 points.

the teacher can use common sense when marking. some don't.

valid post though.
