Law / Does a normal Polish citizen working from Polish home need to pay tax for foreign works? [23]

I get your point about the 185 days in a year, however as a Polish person (with a Polish passport) has the right to enter and leave Poland anytime he pleases and as frequently as he pleases, it would be very difficult to PROVE that he has lived in Poland for the 185 days.

Not hard - all they have to do is look at his bank account. Bear in mind that the Polish tax authorities are no different to HMRC or anyone else - they can quite legally ask for statements from the bank account and so on. Also, bear in mind that they get a hell of a lot of tip-offs from jealous neighbours and so on.

Also, with tax, usually you have to prove to them rather than the other way round. A Polish citizen in particular should be taking care to prove their non-liability for tax.

If during his stay he makes two trips abroad of 2 weeks each, would the 185 days rule be broken or when would the period be counted from?

I'm not sure that temporary absences from Poland count as absences at all. I'm pretty sure they're not - but still, if he was deliberately sailing close to (but not over) the 185 day limit, then he would be well advised to keep detailed receipts proving his absence from Poland.

Law / Does a normal Polish citizen working from Polish home need to pay tax for foreign works? [23]

My own personal overview is this. Generally, if a person is not ordinarily resident in Poland, having a home, business interests, family connection, then the Polish Government may not consider him a Polish domicile.

Poland doesn't have such tricky concepts as domicile - if you're resident in Poland for more than 185 days of the year, you're tax resident. If not, then you aren't tax resident.

My question is: if he is neither officially employed by me, nor a self employed in Poland (as he does not live there but he holds the polish citizenship), can he do the free lanc work to me from distance while being in his flat in Poland, and without paying any local income tax in Poland?

Of course not. He's legally resident in Poland, and must pay tax in Poland accordingly.

News / Local elections in Poland, EU citizens should register to vote [57]

WTH! Sobieski?! How dare you vote in my country if you are'nt polish citizen? Keep your filthy hands on Politics in your own country! I dont care who you love or dont like in my country!

Sorry, you signed up for the EU, and now we're going to exercise our EU rights :)

The fact that the American Polonia get to vote is far worse - at least we live, work and pay taxes here.

It would be good though if the PIS morons would be defeated in the first round.

PiS are falling apart - when even some of the more questionable members are starting to leave, you know their time is up. I can't help but think that Kaczynski has been completely manipulated though - who on earth allowed him to have an election "spot" with a coffin?!

Just for the record: you are a foreigner who has no concept of this country's politics, but you are politicaly correct; you have mainstream acceptable views; you are almost a Polish yuppie, and regreatably you can vote.

No concept? Is that the same concept as Jarek's "the people made a mistake" nonsense?

There's really not much to understand - the general population doesn't like PiS and they stand to lose in 27 out of the 28 biggest cities. Heck, when they're projected to lose Kielce, what the hell is wrong with them?

Thankfully, I can vote too. And vote I will :)

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

But bear in mind that the difference in price between supermarket and pub booze is probably at its highest ever - how the hell can pubs cope when a pint costs about 6 times less at home? There's also the pubco factor - the whole industry has far more problems than just the smoking ban.

There's also an exit tax :)

You're joking! how much?

On a side note, that's not even €70k..and amount easily reachable without too much effort in quite a few places on the globe.

Quite easily done in Switzerland and Luxembourg, I imagine!

Life / Polish gimnazjums - memoirs of a teacher [32]

Who want to say that polish schools/youth are better than in western countries let better wake up dreaming about neverland!

In all honesty, the actual theoretical knowledge is probably higher than many Western countries.

But the level of practical skill and knowledge is almost zero - Polish children simply don't leave school equipped to go to work.

You can't just keep raising taxes forever with most of the money going to pay this huge debt. It's time to pay down the debt by reducing govt.

Ah yes, agreed.

As much as I like Obama's vision, it just seems that now isn't the time. Universal health care might make sense in the long term (though convex-nomics dictates otherwise) - but I just cannot see how America can keep spending.

It wouldn't surprise me to see America return to the "me-first" policy.

If we do not, collapse is inevitable :(

America is too big to collapse, it'll just mean much higher taxes. Same in the UK - all the talk of crisis is really because no-one wants to stick 5 pence on income tax, even though it would be the easiest way to raise a lot of cash quickly.

Probably I just normally do so much more and make so much more money than you

Nah, I doubt it. You only can afford to keep $5k in the bank at one time, after all.

That's pocket change, really.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

explain!

Not hard to explain. In our Western culture, men generally are seen as the main breadwinner, due to decades of pay discrimination against women. That's why it's strange that someone would want to sit at home rather than provide for his family.

Genealogy / Scott Grifka, Family history [13]

BUSIA/BUSHA:What's with this anti-busha (busia) thing anyway? It's simply a Polish-American reigional variant for grandmother, just as the Québecois French contains many words not known in France. Busha is no more idiotic than some of the idiotic things people in Poland say like sorki, wow, spoko, nara, pozdro, piona, ziomal, etc. Why don't you post-PRL-ians start criticising that nonsense you hear all about you these days?

Because at least it's real Polish rather than made up nonsense. There's no seperate Polish-American dialect that's recognised by anyone, so :)

Strange, isn't it?

It's weakening against the Pound, but the Pound and Zloty are always flying around unpredictably anyway.

If I recall rightly, the Zloty and Euro (and before that, the DM) have always been rather stable in relation to each other.

I am the type of american that helped make america great.

What, by sitting at home and complaining on the internet?

Great Americans do, rather than complain. Anyway, if you were so great, why did you visit a cheap dentist? All the great Americans I know can afford private dental care...

Or to think you can afford a house. I agree ,just stupid i guess.

True, that's why most responsible husbands get out and work, rather than sitting online all day. I know plenty of Poles who own their own property - but - guess what - the man works too :)

The zloty is weakening big time ATM. Wonder why?

Weakening big time? Against what? It's held at around 3.9/euro for months now. Wonder why you keep lying?

No Delph, I don't want these things. I can live with what we have now (or live around it, anyway)

Poland can't really live with it though - KRUS is like a massive knot around the Government's neck, ZUS has a huge black hole that needs filling and the country can't keep on going paying forever.

But paying lots of taxes is nothing to be proud of. It usually just means you're stupid.

You're very patriotic, aren't you? Your country is ******, and all you can think about is how to avoid paying taxes?

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

Oh dear, I love when someone posts something that actually proves them wrong.

Toward this goal, President Bush initially promised some US$100 million in economic assistance, and a three-year package totaling US$1 billion was proposed later in the year.

Proposal is one thing. I want to see a source which actually states that $1 billion was actually transferred to Poland. Bear in mind that in return for any support, Poland had the help of some American "experts" to advise with the transition to a market economy.

We can even see to this day that Poland is buying American - F-16's instead of Eurofighters, anyone?

The privately managed Polish-American Enterprise Fund (PAEF) was created in May 1990 to provide credit for Polish entrepreneurs to start businesses.

Loans, loans, loans. I don't see any grants there.

So, where's this billion dollars?

indeed, like dumping a billion dollars into the Polish economy. But that's nothing.. Israel is REALLY expensive.

A billion dollars?

Source?

I always also keep in mind that there are numerous Russians in Poland today who masquerade as Poles. so a lot of conversations here do not truly reflect Polish ideas or ideals, but rather the opinions often reflect those who robbed the rich Poles half a century ago.

Hahahahaha. Why is it that Americans keep bringing this up, but no-one here ever mentions these Russians? The people who betrayed and ruled Poland were Polish.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

Do you really think that in case of troubles a bunch of poorly armed citizens will have any chance against US army?I don't think so.Any rebelion would be quickly and easily quelled.

Why has the US Army had such problems in the past then? Why did the Red Army do so badly in Afghanistan? Why did the British Army have serious issues with the IRA, even though the membership of the IRA was pathetically small?

Anyway, in terms of guns - surely it goes right back to the founding of America? It's her culture, after all. What works for America works for America, and it's none of my business to interfere.

OMFG, you are saying that good uncle Sam gives money to foraign countries and expects nothing in exchange?Get a life.

It's worth looking at just what money came into Poland in 1989 - and who the foreign experts were. They certainly weren't Russian, German or British.

What, you don't want KRUS abolished, early retirement scrapped for most (undeserving) people, ZUS reform, pension reform, education reform (including tuition fees to discourage people from taking pointless courses) and so on?

based on what?

Based on laws passed and proposed laws by the PiS government.

could you possibly describe these ominous circumstances ?

Shall we start with the vetoing of professors?
