History / EU or Russian Empire, who taking/took more from Poland and Poles? [40]

Yup, but I think it would be a bit, ahem, devastating in the short term. By short term, I mean, the next 10 or so years...then, if, and only if, Poland can elect a competent government, than maybe you'd see benefits of not being a member of the EU.

Polonia / on touring in Europe [6]

Eugene Hutz

God amongst men.

Gogol Bordello and the Melvins need to go on tour so that I can become a groupy.

Just don't call it 'the people's choice'.

Who's choice was it?

Weak zloty encourages export of labour mostly, and I'd rather keep those people home, working in their professions rather than washing dishes abroad.

And I agree. Thank the NBP for that.

Don't you know about democracy?

Bless you for that :)

Nauseating, in the best commie traditions. The resulting majority was not too big either.

Nearly 80% voted "tak" that day with over a 50% turnout...

Now it's different. People see the benefits of free labour movement. People can't see the benefits of prices equalising.

Of course, the problem is that price equalization happened much quicker than salary equalization. On the other hand, people see it as a success that the NBP dropped the value of the zloty in order to keep growth positive over the last couple of years. Self made pain?

So the Polish people are too stupid to decide things for themselves? People were coerced into voting yes? How so? I'd be interested to see what kind of propaganda there was, and how the reality is different now 6 years on.

Food / Kotlet schabowy again. I love it. [47]

It could be a protest against Jews and Muslims, convex ;) ;) (the pork thing)

I was thinking that too actually when I made that last post....

Pudzian has had to cut back on the cutlettes. He has lost 25kgs so there's sth :)

That paid off a couple of weeks ago against sweet home Alabama...

Travel / Crossing to Russia: Planning a Motorcycle Trip from Poland to Kalinigrad [26]

Well. Looks like I missed some good thing. ;) Need to check how it works.

I did my tourist visa invitation with these guys:

intelservice.ru

They were really quick in turning it around.

This was my last mail with them:

Please make sure that the Russian consulate in Kazakhstan will accept a
faxed or a scanned copy of a tourist invitation. In case they demand the
original to be presented, the shipping via UPS will take 2-3 days and will
cost you extra $65. We will need to know your full postal address including
post code, contact phone and contact person name.

So I guess it depends on where you get your visa. I've gotten them in Germany, USA, Mongolia, and KZ without a problem using print outs of the invitation....So I'm guessing it's accepted at most :)

yes, i know. Germany, France and Britain invest

In roads, airports, schools, power plants, water works, dams, shiny new rescue helicopters, radar for ATC, courthouses....

that 65b is for infrastructure, not private investment.

voluntary? you know, it could be another philosophical question.

Asking your people if they want to be a part, majority says yes, I'd say that's as voluntary as you could get.

History / EU or Russian Empire, who taking/took more from Poland and Poles? [40]

there are rumors that EU presidency needs to cost Poland 110 million euro in 2011. If that could be truth, its robbery

There is a thread about this already.

65,000,000,000
- 110,000,000
=
Crow, please come rob me like the EU has robbed Poland!

Again, it was voluntary. Poland doesn't have to take presidency of the EU, they could for instance give it to Slovenia which seems to be able to afford it.

Food / Kotlet schabowy again. I love it. [47]

don't say that on a Polish forum. it's the national choice :)

I was going to put a warning on that post saying that I was going into hiding :)

It's interesting how big pork is, it is a Slavic thing? Any particular reason? Most Slavic countries seem to be more pork friendly that most other places.

Good marbling on red meat steaks will make for juicier steaks.

That's always been my cue when finding a new friend for the grill.

This tends to break up the tissue fibres too much and allows the natural juices to be released too quickily. Fry on a very high heat and finishing in the oven will give you a much better tasting cut of meat, especially if you then allow it to sit for at least 5 mins after cooking.

I thought that the majority of the juices are from the fat, which aside from pulverizing the thing, shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Meh, pork is for the days when you're roughin' it anyway :)

Make sure they don't rip you off on insurance. It'll be in a little hut at the border. They should have a book with all the different rates in it. It shouldn't cost you more than maybe €10 for a week of liability on a bike. You can also purchase it in advance.

Another really important thing, you need an IDP in Russia.

Also, the vehicle must be in your name, or you need a power of attorney from the owner that allows you to take it into Russia.

Why is it that so many people don't take the time or have the patience just to cook the meat for longer. Tenderizing it only will make the cut drier.

Regarding a cheaper cut of steak, there is nothing to do with cheap other than cook it for hours.

Why would tenderizing dry it out vs say frying it for god knows how long? If you beat the thing and soften up, you don't have to fry it as long to get it tender. At least I think so, most of my work is done on balcony :)

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

I know, I said that particular calculation was made just for the fun of it. I'm not THAT big an optimist ;)

So taking that all into account...it all stemmed from a comment of being as influential as Italy in the near future. Do you see that being possible in our lifetimes?

I don't want to turn it into a pissing match, and honestly, if this EU experiment keeps up, in 50 years it won't much matter.

Your thoughts oh mighty Torq of the North?

Anyways - gotta catch some z's. Goodnight, lads.

pfft..

Keep it for steaks!!!! grrrr angry David hates people fecking up food! :D

Pork can be beaten up, nothing wrong with that. There is no reason to take a mallet to any cut of steak worth eating.

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

If their economy shrinks at 5% and our grows at the same rate of 5%, then after
17 years our economy will be larger than theirs (973b to 882b)

Comeon now, my second example was if Italy stays constant and Poland grows at 5%...

I have some drink in me now, put on my bow tie, and I'm back in the game.

Travel / Crossing to Russia: Planning a Motorcycle Trip from Poland to Kalinigrad [26]

I'm planning to stay in Russia for just one day.

Why only a day? Just passing through Kaliningrad? Seems like a waste of a visa :)

Also where is the best place to cross on motorcycles?

If wildrover can't help you on that one, you might want to check into horizonsunlimited for border crossing info.

Life / Tricks & Dodges (The Poles are nothing if not inventive) [26]

It was famouse times when people where "refilling" their magnetic phone booth cards.

They did that with a card writer. Once people figured out that it was just a value encoded on a magnetic strip card, all you needed was a writer.

The phone booth trick was to hold a recorder to the earpiece when you put in your money. back in the days of pulse-tone technology, the earpiece would play a small "blip" noise, which you could then play back down the microphone to trick the phone that you had paid.

Blue boxes :) That's where the name for the magazine 2600 came from. It's a bit more complicated than tricking it into thinking that you paid, but not much.

Torq
You're right, I'm an idiot. I haven't drank anything tonight yet. It would only take 35 years for Polands GDP to arrive at Italys current GDP. My mistake, I should be lined up against the wall.

Give me a minute to get back on my game :)

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

Italy's GDP: $1.739 trillion
Poland's GDP: $0.69 trillion

You're using PPP which is great for comparing how much disposable income poland has per capita, but doesn't do a very good job to compare the size of the economies.

cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/2195.html

Italy's GDP is $2.11t
Poland's GDP is $0.43

4. That, my mathematically inept friend, means that at the same rates of shrinking
(5% for Italy) and growth (1.6% for Poland), in 14 years Poland would have larger
economy than Italy.

Ah, partial Oklahoma education has failed me once again.

Anyway, done correctly, you end up with equilibrium at 25 years in real GDP at about 620b (feel free to check my work).

Regarding the military, it's just a comparison of technology and the numbers. Keeping things like patriotism and bravery out of the equation.

Back to the point at hand, do you think that Italy's GDP will shrink 5% a year for the next 25? Me either, it was just an illustration of something that's not plausible. Now, what is plausible is that Italy will be fairly stagnant, and Poland will experience steady growth. Lets say 5% growth (congratulations wirtschaftswunder Polen!), in 50 years, you're at 970b.

PS, using that same 1.6% -5% calculation, Angola will have a larger economy than Italy in 50 years :)

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

All true but it still doesn't change the fact that Poland was stymied and not allowed to develop naturally. Would you call that fair?

Fair? This is global politics, it's not kindergarten.

By joining the EU, Poland has already demonstrated that it doesn't want to carve out a destiny completely on its own. Trade short term gain for long term restraints on growth.
