History / Are there still communists in Poland? [58]

A friend revently visited China and said she could not access Google or Facebook

I thought that Google and Facebook both have deals with the Chinese government what content is accessible from within the country. Has that changed recently?

Had their been a conflict between Warsaw Pact and NATO...

...Europe would have been a sea of molten glass within five minutes. Loyalty is not much worth after you've been vaporized.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

I don't disagree but why do you think that is ?

Lots of reasons. Excellent volunteer networks, usually great staff at school, support for gifted children or those that need additional help. Depends on the school district of course. 5th grade is a mixed bag already. Teachers are oftentimes not really involved anymore. They drown the kids in homework and rely completely on the parents instead of doing their job properly. Pensions are more important, if you know what I mean.

Study / German v.s. Russian, language usefulness in Poland? [54]

Netherlanders ... invariably switch, or at least, prefer to switch to English when addressing Germans

True only in Amsterdam.

Dutch and German are so closely related that both people can understand each other when they speak slowly. The German dialect "Plattdütsch" is a mixture between German, Dutch and English.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

Forget about all these so-called "studies" - they are always rigged and controlled by political interests. Take the PISA study for example. There was a big discussion in Germany a few years back why the country ended up so low in the ranking, and that something had to be done. Turned out that it were only those German states that were ruled by the Social Democrats and the Greens which dragged Germany down. The state of Saxony, ruled by the conservatives at that time, was even ahead of Finland and would have taken the #1 spot if it would have been a sovereign country. Guess what happened after the Spiegel magazine published it: the politicians made sure that the statistics was only available for the whole country from then on and not on a per state basis anymore. Same happens everywhere; also in Poland. The f*ckers are just covering up that they are messing with the education system.

...much further ahead of the American students

The US are way ahead from K to 5. After that they quickly fall behind.

Life / Why are Polish so conservative and religious? [240]

Feeling guilty about it?

Why would anybody in his right mind feel guilty about the crusades? The simple truth is that the countries in Europe become increasingly secular.

...

Have you forgotten that ISIS-style atrocities were once committed in the name of the Christian god, too? Religious fanatics are always dangerous. The question simply is where faith ends and real fanaticism begins (Rafał Trytek, Tadeusz Rydzyk)

Genealogy / How can the surname Drzewiecki be both Jewish and Catholic? [37]

"Polish internationalist" of German origin...

That's your biggest concern, isn't it? LOL! Try again, or maybe you read post #28?

Australia seems to be a bit far from Poland

Much like the USA where you and I live... :)

News / US slaps Poland in the face (Comey Poland) [92]

It clearly states that Britain and France are in the end to blame for what you call a "worldwide slaughtering which included the Holocaust and countless other crimes against humanity"

Your statement that the world war resulted only from British and French is ignorance on a scale that would make even Comey boggle.

Guys, you two are like two predictable little Jack in the Box's - jumping up and crying on every occasion where you think someone is criticizing either Poland or the UK. If you would have actually read my post you would have seen that I was responding to Polonius' statement that "Poland got treated rather shabbily by the US and Britain after it was all over." My answer simply implied that this is sort of an ungrateful statement because the UK (and France) went to war FOR Poland, and consequently even endured a world war with all its atrocities. Which is a large price to pay to fight for one country's freedom and to stop a rabid dictator - like it or not. So do me a big favor and relax for once, dudes. You're getting boring.

Poland got treated rather shabbily by the US and Britain after it was all over.

You guys always forget that it was Britain and France which, for the sake of Poland (and their own imperial interests), declared war on Germany - thus escalating a regional conflict into a worldwide slaughtering which included the Holocaust and countless other crimes against humanity. Would you have preferred that the world had looked the other way after the German/ Soviet invasion?

This is not to suggest that there were no individual Poles who collaborated with the Germans. But people of every nationality collaborated, even the Jews.

Yes, we did it ... but others did it, too. Typical excuse for everything bad under the sun.

Unlike Poland, Austria has never been a victim of the Nazis. They were the ones who cheered the loudest when they were admitted "heim ins Reich", and since then they are trying to blame someone else for their own actions.

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

This feeling sadly is shared even today by even a lot of younger Germans I've encountered, whose nickname for Poles is, unfortunately, "Dodelkoenig"

Making things up again, are we? There is no such word as Dodelkoenig in German. The only derogatory term for Polish people I'm aware of is "Polack" (same as in English), and that one is almost exclusively used by the handful of remaining neo-Nazis in Germany. You must've hung out with a lot of weird old people while you were there, because what you describe is absolutely not the norm amongst Germans born after the war.

I'm starting to wonder whether the old stereotype of the xenophobic Anti Defamation League from NYC is actually true.

History / Was the holocaust by Germans in Poland the worse genocide in history? [210]

you are very right to be wary of Lyndon Larouche as a source for anything except insane ravings.

Yeah, just checked the main web site and that guy seems to be deranged. Sorry for that. I've heard about the so-called genocide in British India a few times already, but unfortunately there are hardly any web sites that cover that topic.

The difference here, Harry & TheOther, is that the Jews were forced into concilliating with the enemy!

Why are you addressing me here, Lyzko? Did I miss something?

History / Was the holocaust by Germans in Poland the worse genocide in history? [210]

All it takes for evil to take root is for good people to do nothing.

If you have a choice, that is. The Nazis were not democratically elected, as you might know. It's always easy to demand the "good people doing the Christian thing" if you don't have to live under such a terror regime yourself. Mao, Pol Pot, ISIS, Stalin, Hitler ... they all have one thing in common: once they were in control, opposition from within was almost impossible and the slaughter began.

History / Was the holocaust by Germans in Poland the worse genocide in history? [210]

The Nazi Holocaust however had the sole distinction of being the most methodically documented, carried out with nearly the complete support of the German population

Until you show me a source that clearly demonstrates that the vast majority of the German population knew about the extermination camps in the east, I call BS on that.

He should've said "...the accomplices of Germany in Poland, Hungary, and so many, many other places..."

Fact is that the Nazis had plenty of willing helpers all over Europe (not too many in Poland). After the war everybody had been in the resistance, of course...

News / How Polish diaspora see future of Poland? as ethnic Polish state or just Polish in origin? [120]

Hopefully Poland will see this and remain a pure ethnic Country with it's immigration laws.

There is the so-called Freedom of Movement within the EU. Poland cannot expect other countries to welcome her citizens but at the same time refuse to grant people from other EU nations permanent residency and/or working permits. That's not how it works.

They don't want to just take your land or kick you out of your cities, they want to erase your past, your heritage.

Life / No Easter Bunnies in Poland? [7]

one of the most iconic of Anglo-Easter representations, the Easter Rabbit, appears to be missing from many European Easter traditions

Still very popular in Germany: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Bunny

"The custom was first mentioned in Georg Franck von Franckenau's De ovis paschalibus[2] (About Easter Eggs) in 1682[3] referring to a German tradition of an Easter Hare bringing Easter eggs for the children."

Feedback / Is the Administrator of the P.F. a Native Pole ? [80]

You don't have to even live in another country. People have those "filters" even when they're on a holiday somewhere.

There is a huge difference between being on vacation in a foreign country and living/working there. As long as you bring money, people will always be nice to you. Once you compete with them for jobs though and you are not willing to integrate, you will see a whole different side of their persona. Just read the posts here on PF that complain about Poles taking away British jobs for example.

No foreigner will ever tell you that (s)he knows Poland better than you or any other native Pole. That was not the point. What was said was that a foreigner living in Poland will be able to see certain things critically that a local wouldn't even notice. What you wrote here ...

One Russian complained that he can't play his accordion in his flat because of his neighbors. And in Russia he would open his window and people would sing together with him! How he misses that!

... is a simple example of what I was trying to bring across. Maybe the Germans have too many rules and should loosen up a bit like people in other countries, I don't know. But it takes foreigners and Germans who have lived abroad for a long time to teach them that because they cannot see it themselves. Same is true for the Polish people. Not everything that you consider perfect in your country is actually perfect. The version of history you were taught at school might not be the full truth. And so on and so forth. There are so many examples. Don't think, by the way, that only Poles are so defensive when it comes to a foreigner criticizing their country. Americans, Brits, Germans, Australians, ..., are all the same in that respect. It's human, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's right.

Let me guess - German and...? :)

Would that help you file me under a convenient stereotype? LOL!

How do you even know your home country then?

Home is where my heart is, and at the moment that's the USA. Before that there were many other countries.

And TheOther seems to be turning lately into Harry's clone. Soon he'll probably take delph's place and the madness will continue.

You ARE blonde ... :)

News / Poland: A Successful case of low criminality in Europe? [97]

This is the main reason why most of them plan to come back to their motherland one day.

I'm interested - especially if there is a net inflow or outflow of people to and from Poland at the moment. Any links? Thanks.

In this case, perhaps Poland's relative poverty is a blessing in disguise.

Only if you want to keep Poland relatively poor forever would you (maybe) have a point. But Poland is not an island somewhere in the middle of nowhere. The country is member of the Schengen area, and once it becomes economically attractive in comparison to western nations, you will not prevent people of all backgrounds from moving into Poland. Poland will have no chance to avoid that unless they want to leave the EU, and I guarantee you that will not happen.

News / Poland: A Successful case of low criminality in Europe? [97]

You guys don't think. Poland has lost millions of educated people who emigrated over the past decades, the birth rate of the country is dangerously low, and in most segments the economy is still not competitive on the world market. The only reasons that currently allows Poland to brag about being the only country in the EU with a growing economy is the combination of a well educated workforce and low wages. Take away the first through emigration and you are in trouble, take away the second by increasing wages and you're toast. Poland will have no choice but to open up to immigration if she wants to play an important role in Europe.

you will never find out about the real life from the Internet or the media

It is not about information; it's all about experience.

Good on ya! I've been trying to get that across for quite some time now but it seems that people don't want to listen or simply refuse to use their brain.

the internet can be pretty enlightening

And also very deceiving.

learn some other language

Oh, I actually speak two more languages besides English. Does that count? :)

That nothing from outside gets inside and vice versa?

What gets in from the outside through other people is always filtered. You need to form your own opinion - best done by living outside the comfort zone that is your home country. Trust me, I've been doing this for almost my entire life.

You think I wouldn't like that?

Don't know. Are you really ready for something other than a short vacation?

In Chicago, of course

Who would have thought ... :)

WHY haven't I been able to edit for the last two days ?

The EDIT button is at the very bottom of the page now. Easy to overlook.

Regarding your hopes that this forum will be "Polish-run" (that includes Polonia members) one day: I really hope that will never happen because PF would turn into a Polish version of Stormfront within a week.

he doesn't really care what others want this forum to be

Why would he? It's his forum. If you don't like it, leave. Simples.

Why should I move to another country?

To broaden your horizon for example? To experience other cultures? To see that things can be done differently than in Poland? To understand that not everything your politicians at home tell you is the truth?

To learn the opinions and views of other people? I have the internet for that

I would call you blonde if you'd really mean that... :)

that includes Polonia members

... should read "that includes certain Polonia members"

Happy Easter everyone!
