Love / Met a Polish girl on the Internet, and I'm soon off to meet her... [82]

Of course, there will always be golddiggers, especially in poorer countries like PL. Just be beware of girls that start asking you for drinks. But I guess it's just a gut feeling you must have about certain girls. My advice would be: don't go for the extremely good looking girls. They usually tend to be golddigging the most. But of course exceptions do the rule. Just go on your intuition, usually that's the right thing to follow. Hope it works all out just fine for you, dude! Good luck :)

would a girl from poland really do such nasty things

It's not a typical PL girlie thing as it can happen with all bimbos from everywhere, but that wasn't the point. And I do believe you get my point. But if you feel secure enough then you should go for it :) Remember, even though I'm usually not, even I sometimes can be wrong :D

But if you enjoy it, then go for it. I just wanted to point out the pssbl risks and indeed if it goes wrong, while you're there, make the best of it and head for pubs and clubs, there will always be some chickadee interested, even if only for one night ;) And, if I can believe the stories, if you're not too bad looking, then the girlies will be all over you once they know you're from abroad :) But I take it that this won't be the case in Krakow as they are kinda used to visitors...Good luck :)

She sounds like just any 22-year old girl. Nothing special. But Inet dating is in my book a bad idea as you never know with whom you're dealing. Photos don't mean a thing. Do you want to take that risk and go to PL and then find out she already has a b/f (wouldn't be the first time, you know) or that she doesn't show up and the number/address she gave is wrong et cetera. Better to meet a girlie in a pub or a nightclub or something where you at least have the chance to see for yourself. After you convinced yourself that she is real, you can always go on Inet and say horny things to each other. However, meeting in real life is no guarantee there is some b/f behind the scenes anyway. But it's up to you anyway. You asked for my opinion, here it is :)

Happy endings? Nah, boring :) We want sad outcomes, nasty endings as they are much more interesting to look at ;)

USA, Canada / Windows xp in USA in Polish? [13]

RubasznyRumcajs

It's explainable when you consider that the majority of the computer users are bored housewives and likewise human beings who definitively need a sidebar, need a vista clock on their desktop and so on. And these things swallow up memory.

For me myself all these things are not really necessary - in fact I have Win7 in classic Windows look :) I had installed the 32bits first, but now I installed the 64bits as it would suit my needs better. Problem with Linux is that when it runs fine it's all ok, but when there is an issue, you immediately have a BIG issue; therefore Linux is not yet suitable for the major public. And Mac looks nice, is nice, but you simply cannot compare Mac with Win as Win serves a much bigger market and MS has specifically stated they want to focus on s/w alone where as, like I said, Apple makes the hardware as well, so it's just 1 config and of course that's gonna be much smaller. However, I've seen that Leopard is not THAT much smaller than Win7 and also starts to use quite a bit of mem.

Bottomline is: Win7 is stable and a great improvement compared to WinVis and for the majority of users it's simply the best option. And I am not saying that because I work for MS.

USA, Canada / Windows xp in USA in Polish? [13]

There are multi user interfaces (MUI) available in any language you want. Just install the English version and apply the Polish MUI on top of that. That's basically what you get as well if you buy another languaged version of WinXP. You should be able to get a PL MUI as well.

With Win7 you just need to purchase the Ultimate version, this is the only version in which you can change the display language - you will need the original DVD to do this though, it's not just changing the input language with that blue square in the taskbar. If you have any questions, just shoot them.

RubasznyRumcajs

Lemme guess, you are a Linux or Mac man? Win7 can easily measure itself with any other OS around. Difference, for example between SnowLeopard and Win7 is that Apple just has to write for one specific configuration, while MS has to write Windows for 1000's of configurations - tends to be a bit more work and tends to make the OS a bit bigger, eh? But of course, it's an MS product, so it's bad from the start, isn't it? If you are a Mac man and lyrical about Snowleopard - you haven't heard of that superbug found in Snowleopard? That when you log in as a guest, after you created your own profile, everything will be deleted because SL treats every account like a guest account? That means that you will lose everything if you don't have a backup. This bug alone is heavier than all the bugs in WinXP combined.

Life / Charity In Poland (tradition and attitude towards door-to-door collecting) [19]

This topic was opened out of keen interest. I remember that when I was a young kid, truckloads went from my Dutch town and the surrounding towns to Poland at the start of each winter as the ppl were very poor there and needed our help. And we did help: Those trucks contained clothing, food, medicine and toys. Maybe the Western politics didn't care about PL, the Dutch ppl (and I am sure ppls from other countries as well) did care about their brothers in need in PL. I was just wondering if PL returns the favour.

"For the poor kids in Poland, they have it so much worse than you do", she always said to me when I asked why. She is Jewish, Sokrates - just FYI as maybe you were raised with my teddy bear or those colouring books)

Of course you have. Ppl tend to forget sometimes that we SHARE the world with our four-legged and feathered friends and that they are entitled to the Earth as much as we do. We only THINK we own the planet, but in fact, like Keanu Reeves says in "The Day The Earth Stood Still": "If you die, Earth will live on; if Earth dies, YOU die." It's important to remember that, my oink-impersonating son :)

Life / Animal Rights Movements in Poland [56]

So, we've concluded that there are not really established animal rights movements in PL. Just scattered groups across the country. Are there any more initiatives? I don't know for sure, but there is EU regulation concerning this, will PL adhere to this and form a Polish variant of the RSPCA? What is the attitude in PL towards organisations like this?

Actually that situation was pretty well known in NL too. It caused quite an outrage as the Dutch, just like the British are vivid animal lovers. I think the Dutch RSPCA has also filed a complaint back then, but I am not quite sure about this. I seem to remember they did, though.

Life / Animal Rights Movements in Poland [56]

vkmag.com/videos/videos_poolse_jongen_schiet_kat_af/

From a Dutch website.
This is a gross translation of the text below it.

Polish kid uses some sort of air gun to launch a cat and then shoot it in the air, while firing a gun at it. Another kid filmed it and informed the police. Also, he delivered the tape to a Polish news-station. I hope they put him in jail. If you look well, the cat is still alive.

If you want a literary translation, let me know.

I just had a quick view on their website strazdlazwierzat.com.pl but it's in Polish of course (the English version is under construction) but am I correct when I say that they mainly protect dogs? Or do they do other animals like cats or whatever, too?

It certainly seems that way - by the way: I'm going to NL in December, there might be a slight chance that I will meet with Arien, and we kinda agreed that you should be there too, son. I will PM you on that some time soon.

wildrover

I'm just wondering: isn't there any EU-regulation concerning this topic? I mean, you can tell what a person is the way he treats his animal friends. Maybe there could be a way to kinda "enforce" them in every memberstate? Although I'm not a fan of enforcing laws and stuff, it's like a former Dutch minister of Traffic once said as to why he proposed to confiscate the cars of speed offenders: "you ask them many times to stop speeding, they don't listen. You put laws into place, they don't listen. You put speedbumps on the roads, they don't listen. And in the end it seems that ppl just don't want to have it otherwise."

I agree with you, wildrover: there is a lot of work to be done in PL before we get to where the UK and NL are at the moment concerning animal rights. I do sincerely hope they will use their common sense and install those laws rather sooner than later.

Nice story, wildrover!

Ironic fact is in this respect: Nazi Germany was the first country in the world that actually implemented laws to protect animals. It was in fact one of the first things Hitler did. Hitler liked animals better than ppl. How ironic indeed.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Maybe it's more important to look at what Copernicus accomplished than to look where he was from? I always looked at Copernicus as a great scholar and yes, I've always admired him and yes, I always have been taught he was Polish and no, it doesn't matter to me where he is from. To me he's a great product of the European renaissance, Polish renaissance if you like. Or the European/Polish enlightment, if you so want it. It's somehow the same discussion with Vincent van Gogh: everybody knows he is Dutch, yet the French (used to) claim he was actually French. This is not meant as an attempt to bring this thread to van Gogh, for the ppl who don't understand, but as a comparison.

News / Poland's Organized Crime [58]

For a while there was a wave of criminal activities from Polish gangs in NL. They simply would rob some store, warehouse or residential house, load the stuff in their cars and move off back to PL. We know they were Polish as most of these incidents happened right over the NL-DE border and Dutch police caught gangs every now and then. But I don't hear much from that lately.
