UK, Ireland / WRS (Workers Registration Scheme) - Do I need to get one? [6]

Me and the missus have been working in the UK for a month now. We have been told by one manager that we need to fill in a WRS (Workers Registration Scheme) form and pay the 90 pound fee to keep working. However another manager has told us that, due to the WRS becoming illegal in April (as confirmed by the home office website) that we don't have to.

The WRS is still in effect until the 1st of May, so yes, you need to register.

However, the chances of them prosecuting anyone now for not registering is unlikely, to say the least. As they say - you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Real Estate / Best Investment Deal In Poland Wroclaw !? [9]

Hm.. after a little more digging the bottom line is that putting legal procedures of getting permit aside it looks like entire street is fighting with that investor.

Always much more to the story once you dig into it, really.

I can't see people having much sympathy for the investors in Wroclaw - I know the part of the city, and if they want to stick 16 apartments in there, no wonder the locals are furious.

Work / part-time job in Poland needs work permit? [40]

So why do you need more advice or information? The answer is simple - you have to find an employer who will apply for a work permit for you.

Life / How many English native speakers in Poland? [28]

Surely that can't be a very big problem(:

Oh it is ;) It leaves you absolutely lifeless in summer!

Migrating to any country isn't easy, even if it is English speaking.

Without a doubt. Moving to a big city is easy enough - like from Poznan, you're about 70 minutes by train away from Germany. But moving to a village in Eastern Poland - nice places to visit, but I can imagine the feeling of being trapped could happen very quickly.

Life / How many English native speakers in Poland? [28]

Indeed, it's actually a point that I don't know any TEFL teachers who are actually actively taking Polish lessons. I was talking about this to my Polish teacher just on Friday - that many foreigners just don't have the will to actually learn.

I notice quite a few people on here are posting about moving to Eastern Poland and building a house with their wife - these are such obvious candidates for divorce down the line, and I think many of them have little idea of what they're getting into.

Life / How many English native speakers in Poland? [28]

Oh, many reasons. One big problem is that the average Brit can't find himself too well here - the language isn't easy, there's not much call for them and the winters are much harsher - as well as much warmer summers.

One couple I know broke up after the Polish mother-in-law kept interfering to the point of driving the Brit mad. And don't forget - it's not exactly easy to go from earning (for instance) 500 euro a week to earning 750 euro a month.

The problem very often is that the Brit is only going because the wife wants to. It's not a good recipe for success, at all.

USA, Canada / Things that Polish-American should know about Poland. [168]

The only wimp is you - after all, you're the one that told a foreign power that you renounce your Polish citizenship - all for the sake of having more money.

Ironside is totally right - and furthermore, he actually lives here! We may not agree, but heck, at least he's really Polish!

Lots more Brits and Irish have moved over with wives since the big Polish immigration. Guessing that growth might start to drop off.

Especially once the marriages start breaking up - especially the ones who have gone to rural areas. I've already heard of several marriages having broken up in a rather nasty way.

**** them and **** EU !

Certainly. I'm sure we can discuss re-erecting the border fences, and make sure that every Pole needs to apply for a visa to enter the EU.

USA, Canada / Things that Polish-American should know about Poland. [168]

I think the Schengen members would have given a big hearty gut laugh if Poland made demands to enter the Schengen agreement.

Heck, there was quite a big diplomatic crisis in 1990 after Germany unified - Poles suddenly needed visas to access Germany (they had visa-free access to West Berlin to that point) and the Poles went absolutely beserk.

They were only given visa-free access to the Schengen zone (although there were still internal border checks at that point) after promises that they would take back anyone overstaying.

Food / Turkey kiełbasa? [9]

I understand many meat producers are using turkey meat in Poland to maek kiełbasa, frankfurters, kabanosy, even polędwica (smoked pork loin). Has anyone tried them? Are they good? Are they cheaper than the traditional pork-based type?

They serve a useful function - to provide cheap food to people who can't afford much.

Personally, I think it's insulting to look down at people eating such things. If they do, it's their choice - who am I to judge?

USA, Canada / Things that Polish-American should know about Poland. [168]

I wrote nothing about any Schengen theories. I wrote about Polish law in regards to visas for Americans. I linked to a relevant page of Poland's government website where they state clearly that Americans (among others). Do not need visas to visit Poland. Wikipedia states the same, in the very article Harry linked to, and immediately under the fragment he quoted.

Schengen law overrides Polish law. Therefore, while a "visa" (as it's understood to be a piece of paper placed in the passport) isn't required, the stamp is still a visa - ie, permission to stay for 3 months.

Law / GBP to PLN: Best way to get good exchange rate? [22]

Not true. I got pulled flying UK to Poland with just under £10k, they told me I had to declare anything over 5000 euro.
A bit of a surprise to me, but they were adamant. I got questioned and searched. However, a bank statement and ATM withdrawal slips satisfied them that it was legal.

Usual crap from HMRC's monkeys. They really are a law unto themselves.

I actually suspect declaring anything to HMRC for intra-EU travel would be entirely against EU rules - there should be no customs controls between countries.

Having said this, Schengen is an utter pain in terms of being able to find out about the legality or otherwise of something in a country.

To be honest, a lot of it is the result of seeing how the Catholic Church abuses its position in Poland. I dare say that the vast majority of people on here are happy with the Catholic church existing, but not when it abuses its position for its own benefit.

History / My Great Grand father took part in the Battle of Warsaw! [90]

I think you're wrong, and anyone who plans to invade Poland, hoping that "Polish spirit is broken", has a very unpleasant surprise in store for him.

But where's the evidence of that? The Polish army doesn't have much experience, the Air Force is a mess, there's no (pardon the phrase) citizen's militia - what hope would Poland have these days? It's no surprise that the politicians are so keen on America - it's Poland's only hope come another invasion.

Where did you even get this idea? Polish armies may be broken, our country may be under occupation, but the spirit and will to fight back were always here, and still are.

Oh, the last 200 years of history or so shows that Poland, when occupied, doesn't do well when it comes to kicking the enemy out. One successful uprising in 200 years isn't exactly great statistics, is it?

Different times, different situation. Today, with the technology available, possibilities of conducting terroristic warfare are almost endless.

Sure, but what hope would that be if the enemy decided to wipe out Poles instead of fighting fair?

Strong, numerous territorial defence is vital for Poland's safety.

Indeed. The experience of the Finnish paramilitaries during WWII shows what can be done.

USA, Canada / Things that Polish-American should know about Poland. [168]

You forgot to mention that Americans, Polish or otherwise, do not need visas to visit Poland.

Wrong. According to Schengen theory, the passport stamp *is* a visa - albeit one that's granted at the border. It's not called that, and the stamp is free - but to all practical extents, it's a 90 day visa.

no mixing for Poles with non whites is what i meant

You'd like that, wouldn't you, you little racist?

I guess you're fine then with Poles mixing with Bosnians - even though Poles will be interbreeding with Muslims. Or is that an exception?

renounced my Polish citizneship??

Well done - you're just admitting that you lied to the Americans. Imagine lying to the country that was good enough to give you a home?

We will see once your hundred thousand Chinese and Pakis come to Poland for work, how Poles are gonna welcome them LOL

Funny thing is, you're an immigrant yourself and yet you bash others? Let's be realistic - if you stayed in Poland, you'd be cleaning my car right now - you're certainly no better than they are!

Law / How can I get Polish citizenship after been married to a Polish spouse [75]

It is not your right to live wherever you want to it is a privillage.

Not under EU law. The family members of an EU national have the right to reside in the EU with the EU national.

I am very surprised it is still not required, but what can you expect? This is Polska.

There's one very simple reason why it's not required : too many foreigners who can claim Polish citizenship (especially those Polish-Americans) without being able to speak Polish. If they close the door on those people, there'll be a huge fuss in Poland.

It is high time to create Polish ICE to pick up all the foraign "students" who forgot to go back to their countries of origin.

There aren't many like that - most of them are quite legitimately registered, because the police do quite frequently check them. I've seen the police hassle clearly non-EU citizens a few times.

Law / GBP to PLN: Best way to get good exchange rate? [22]

I thought it also applied when you entered Poland from the UK - but I could be wrong.

No, not anymore. These rules aren't that old - maybe about 5 years?

There should be big posters near the exit from Customs about this.
