Well you said he's 'well assimilated.' I dont know what you're basing that on and compared to whom. Since generally people who can't speak the language in the country theyre in and dont have citizenship, much less after over 30 years, generally arent considered to be 'well assimilated by most people, so I can only wonder if the migrants flooding into europe - who also dont speak the language, have contempt for the natives of the country theyre in, hate the government system, etc are also 'well assimilated' by your definition and degree of assimilation.
I can work and live all over Europe as I am a eu citizen. Yet if I spent 30 years living in France or Germany and never mastered the language and neber made it past mere residency and never got the citizenship most german and French natives wouldn't consider me 'well assimilated' - theyd winder why after 30 years I still haven't bothered to master the language, especially for a college educated european like Doug. Its kind of like the migrants flowing into europe. Only difference if they've been there a few years and dont know the language, for Doug its over 30.
stop using an important topic (on its own) as a cheap distraction

And in the EU citizenship with a particular country is kind of a non-issue.
