News / Next 100 years - Poland as great power? [35]

The EU will not give it up so easily because it is their soul succes story.

It may arguably be the sole success, certainly the biggest success, among the post 2000 accession countries, if that's what you mean.
As for Russia invading Poland, an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all. As you say, even Russia is not that stupid.

Travel / Holidaying with a 9 and 8 year old in Southern Poland August 2014 [10]

my husband won't hear of it

Although everyone should know what happened in the Nazi camps I think your husband is right. An eight-year-old could be very disturbed. As a compromise you could visit Jewish Kraków. Wieliczka is a must-see if you are in the area. It's one of those gob-smacking places that you'll never forget. Lake Solina in Bieszczady is an option if you like driving.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Well, cheers for the Biedronka info. I'll certainly give it a whirl. I'll be in UK next week so I'll be stocking up on Stilton and gravy granules!

There is little point in stocking up with Hatherwood cheese

I've bought lots of the stuff every British week since Lidl started having them. It's true that towards the end of its very long shelf life it gets a bit crunchy in places (calcification?) but the flavour is still good. It beats having none.

Is the Biedrona stuff real imported English cheddar or a Polish stab at it?

My wife brought something claiming to be cheddar back from Biedronka a couple of months ago. Inedible. Perhaps there's another one I missed, but the one I tried was like Polish Gouda and simply did not have the distinctive cheddar flavour. What's the Belgian cheese you mentioned?

10,99, still decent for 400 g I should say.

Which is 27.47/kg. My local Kaufland sells a cheddar of comparable quality for 73PLN/kg. You are lucky to have an enlightened local Lidl. Still, I stocked up with enough (@9PLN) for a few months.

Undoubtedly. That and the fact that most Polish cheese is boring. Re: traditional British cuisine, I'll be in the UK next week for the first time in a few years, and the first thing I'm going to have is a curry.

Are there so many Brits in Warsaw

Every Pole I've given cheddar to has liked it. My missus eats more than I do, and that's saying something. I reckon Poles have discovered it for themselves. As far as I know I'm the only Brit in town, so someone else is buying it around here.

Went to Lidl yesterday. All the British beer's gone. Not surprising, really, as they were practically giving it away. The Hatherwood's cheddar, too. There were a couple of pieces of the more exotic cheese left, which surprised me as I didn't expect the locals to go for it. I managed to grab the last four packs of the excellent Somerset mature, and the last bit of oak-smoked cheddar. It's a great sign that Polish shoppers have finally discovered the joys of English cheese.

Law / DEALERS Control the markets - Used Vehicles - Cars, Bikes, etc in Poland [22]

The economics of the country dictate so - people love holding onto tat, and believing it to be worth something that it's not

Perhaps it's more to do with history than the current economic climate, but I think you're right. Poles are often hoarders. We had to basically burgle my mum-in-law to clear her cellar of junk, including her beloved 40-year-old washing machine that used to regularly electrocute her.

You must remember the car market before EU accession. Today is paradise compared to those days. In 2000, unable to get credit and short of cash, I paid 6500 for a Lada Sputnik/Samara. It was a pos but it was all I could get at the time.

Classifieds / Warsaw (PL) Tabletop Role Playing Game Group for Expats Only. D&D Fortnightly [87]

Leveling up Mr. Wizard is not the point to the group

The simple question was what does the above mean?
If you are unwilling to answer, perhaps other members could give me guidance.
As for

This does not preclude you from playing whatever dress-up sexual game at your table you wish to engage in.

you clearly have had either a sense of humour bypass, or deep-seated sexual issues, perhaps concerning
"doe-eyed underage pupils".
Anyway, since you can't answer my question, I'll leave the last, no doubt verbose, convoluted words to you. Some of us have to work tomorrow.

Cracked open the more expensive West Country mature cheddar this evening. I bought just one pack because of the price, but I'm going back tomorrow to get whatever is left. It is excellent.

Classifieds / Warsaw (PL) Tabletop Role Playing Game Group for Expats Only. D&D Fortnightly [87]

Making individuals feel uncomfortable in a group would be counterproductive to the reason the group exists

Who said anything about making people feel uncomfortable? I'm talking about consenting adult swingers dressed as leprechauns playing RPGs.

Leveling up Mr. Wizard is not the point to the group

That went over my head. I'm probably not kinky enough.

which I am sure supports the highly unimaginative plotlines for the uncreative, talentless adult video market.

I'll have to take your word for that. I still think there must be scope for taking the fantasy one step beyond. After all, it's about expanding the imagination.

I am sure there are sexual deviant pedos posing as English teachers who seek out doe-eyed underage pupils for private tuition

That's quite an imagination you've got there.

Are there any fantasy game groups with a sex element? I imagine there are lots of people out there who would like to dress up as wizards or goblins and get their rocks off while playing D&D, etc. Not being at all familiar with this sub-culture, perhaps that's what it's all about and I'm just naïve.

Life / Public Transport Woes in Poland [11]

people with huge backpacks that refuse to put them at their feet and go wandering about bumping everyone and taking up two people's spaces

True. Very annoying. Then can, however, be pulled from behind and removed from the bus without being able to resist. This has the added benefit of being highly amusing to other passengers.

My personal bête noire is mobile phone calls. I mean loud, hour-long conversations which prevent you from reading your book or even thinking.

UK, Ireland / Have the British become the worst enemy of the Polish? [45]

ppp. I can't believe that there are many British people who really hate Poles. There are certainly some who see Poles as an easy target when they complain about immigration because an awful lot of Poles have gone to the UK. Having said that, the general impression I get from my British friends and family is that Poles are alright. As you know, there are extremists, like UKIP, who whip up ill feeling between people for their own purposes, and the white working class are at the moment looking for someone to blame for their post-Thatcher disenfranchisement. Poles are a convenient and large target, but if you ignore the Daily Fail and the other rags, the picture isn't so terrible. I'm sure you met one or two nice people when you were there, no?

As for Poles finding it hard to make a living there. Well, the Brits are also having a hard time. I know lots of Poles who have gone to the UK to work. Some of them work in shops and factories and work hard to live a half-decent life, but let's not forget the accountants, dentists and other professionals who have also gone and who have a very good life there.

You and other Poles have every right to complain about things in the UK when you live, work and pay taxes there. How about those of us who live here in Poland? Can't we have a moan now and again. I'm asking you and not 18-year-old Canadians, rabid Americans or fantacists from Serbia.

Study / I have a scholarship for Warsaw university and would like to know about living in Poland [13]

September shouldn't be too cold, could even be pleasantly warm, but winters here can be very harsh. Wait until you get here before buying winter clothes. There's no need to use your baggage allowance on bulky coats, etc. Coming from S. America you'll probably find temperatures of minus 25 or lower a bit of a shock, but with the right clothing and face cream you'll survive.

Britain then relied on handouts from the US post WW2.

Handouts? Hardly. The UK paid the last instalment (45.5m GBP) of huge loans on 31 Dec 2006.
