Life / How to survive with one dollar in Poland [16]

Ouch.. my son is older than you..
A year or so ago, I told the owner of a beachside club (that I frequest on Sunday afternoons, for their live Jamaican bands), that he needed more help behind the bar. I ended up tending it that Sunday, and couple of Sundays after that.. working in full view of the ocean, min $200 in tips.. that was a sweet little gig. Until the word got out and my son and his crew started showing up. I just could not keep slinging gin to 'my kids', it didn't feel right.

USA, Canada / Dual citizenship - US doesn't care if you don't give up Polish passport [103]

so, do you want to be American or not?

That oath does bother me a bit. I'm no fool, if the advantages far outweigh the cons, I'll be lining up for the US citizenship. But, as it is, some of American policies do bug me, and I like traveling on Polish passport... so I can live with the status quo a little longer.

I found an interesting piece that relates to the citizenship vs. residency discussion:

Life / How to survive with one dollar in Poland [16]

My parents share similar stories being immigrants themselves...

Hey! It wasn't that long ago! ;)
It can be done today. Find somebody who is doing a sh!tty job and tell whoever is paying them that you can do it much better and cheaper. Is US, many opportunities are thwarted by virtually non-existing public transportation, but in Poland it should be easier, just from that aspect alone.

My first job in US was for room and board. I got a cot behind the backgrounds at a photo studio. You have to take care of essentials first.

Then I wanted better food so I got an evening job as a busgirl in an italian seafood restaurant.

Thanks. I always keep and eye out for art. If not to buy, at least for inspiration.
So, it turns out that my cousin is in some gypsy folk band. She's a classically trained violinist, that cought the gypsy bug. Awards and all. That's the Lubliń connection. I hate to admit it, but I think that would be a great photo opp. On the other hand, do I lug $5K of camera equipment in my backpack?

I'm making these arrangements in secret, because I really don't want to take anyone with me. Poeple that would want to go, when on vacation, all they want to do is party. And they're no spring chickens, either, and on top of that, they don't handle their alcohol well.

Life / "Whiskification" of Poland? [32]

I think the expense is why bars are displaying it up on the top shelf. Makes the place look a bit posher.

For practical reasons too, so the bartender remembers to charge premium.

I'll probably be visiting Warszawę, Wrocław, Lubliń and Zakopane. Now, plan is coming together rather quickly. I need to be in Lubliń at the beginning of July. Ironically, it seems that I have good connections in all except my native city, Warsaw.

helpful: very helpful! LOL

pgtx, aphro: thanks.
It's a part of an invitation to come for a visit to Poland. I wanted to make sure it didn't involve huffing carbon monoxide or something.

USA, Canada / Where is loyalty of Polish diaspora in America? In USA or in Poland? What is priority? [63]

fly the flag at appropriate holidays

which reminds me of a question I always wanted to ask here:
which of the Poles living is US fly the American flag on appropriate holidays?

Shoot, and I thought you were ready to throw out some Emma Goldman, Bakhunin,

lol.. just some common sense.. if leftists were a group, they would not have me either!
I do find it surprising that, since you defend the Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna so fiercely, you didn't think much of that oath you had to solemny swear when getting your US citizenship. Then, I thought you were more of a pragmatist.

Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna are part of our tradition. But wait, you don't even consider these as virtues, so you would not flinch if someone wants to invade your country,

you need to step away from your video games, dude. Most people I that say they answer to these higher powers, lie, cheat and steal through life, don't get along with their families and are envious of anyone else's success. They hope for a war so they can show how special they think they are. You, talking about moral standards? Ha! Try going through life without hurting others, even if it's just by words alone.

Children usually grow up loving their country.

oh 1jola.. you just like to make assumptions about people. Very judgemental. What happened in my childhood, lol, wouldn't you like to know.
I have a firm stereotype in my mind about you, too.
But, the forces are at play here are very simple. I like to surround myself with smart, honest, open-mided people. I'm close to my family, which settled within few miles. And I can't stand Polish winters.

As far as "loving you country", that's just empty words. Pointing out flaws is a necessary step to making any changes for the better, on Polish forums they are about Poland, on Space Coast forums, they are about local issues. And calling people unpartiotic is usually just a way of controlling them, keeping them from expressing dissatistaction with whatever decisions their government makes.

I don't consider partiotism to be a virtue. Very often it's a form of exclusion. I see all around me real 'mericans so proud of their country because they don't have much to be proud about their own accomplishments. There are many other reasons why I think partiotism causes more harm than good, but I don't have much time right now.

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

Jarek, you have described any poorly educated person with self esteem problems. They are everywhere. It takes a great effort to find intelligent, well adjusted people wherever you are.

That's why I like engineers, one profession where logic rules, and facts outweigh "feelings". You tell a good engineer: "you're doing it wrong" and he'll want you to tell him more. So many others will take it as an insult and shut you out.

That said, I am very critical of Polish people as well, probably because they represent me in a way, therefore my expectations are higher. Some stranger acts like an a$$hole, there's no skin off my bones, but if I'm associated with them by blood or bithplace, that's much harder to ignore.

USA, Canada / Dual citizenship - US doesn't care if you don't give up Polish passport [103]

I don't think the possibility of US and Poland in armed conflict is eminent. But, to some people, their word is still one of the most valuable asset they have, and swearing an oath like that should give them some food for thought.

imminent, dammit
