UK, Ireland / How long would it take for an English style restaurant in Poland to go bust? [80]

Market, then location.

Food by weight places are working really really well around universities and offices.

I think a decent Mexican would make a killing, especially if you could do something like a taco stand. Like what they do on the island with those mobile bacon sandwich vans.

Dunno, come over, take a look. Try to avoid higher end unless you want to go really cliche.

USA, Canada / Polish Food - 40 flavors of pierogies in the US [113]

like what? pizza or cheeseburger pierogi? hell no! and i never will! lol

I see modified pizza roll, which, while not being the peak of the culinary spectrum, they do fill a tummy for a while when you have enough alcohol in the body.

Peanut butter pierogi is just right for Americans; after all, they will chow anything, as long as the portions are big. I would propose mint jelly pierogi chased down with grapefruit juice.

Shouldn't you be out drinking? Stay out a bit longer and start fantasizing about PBJ pierogi.

News / Overcoming (or fostering) political hate speech in Poland? [15]

You don't need to know for the good of the country, man has the US lost its ways... I think a tear might have just been shed at Monticello.

Truth is, they're both attacks on free speech. Dissent is good. Like asking, hey, where are those weapons of mass destruction. I remember when people were being called traitors for questioning the war in Iraq. Surely you as a patriot see something wrong with that picture?

News / Overcoming (or fostering) political hate speech in Poland? [15]

We've seen the same thing here with PC speech codes under the guise of curbing "hate speech" that the dirty Left then wields as a weapon to their political advantage by stifling their opponents.

We've also seen conservatives curb free speech under "obscenity" laws in the US.

P-Land should be very careful about going down this route. Free speech is likely to suffer

You're absolutely right.

I can think of pierogi z mięsem, z serem, ruskie(radzieckie), i chyba z kapustą i grzybami. If you want to make Polish food, make Polish food.

Don't eat much sweet pierogi? What kind of cheese?

Like I said, just replace the word "pierogi" with American style Polish dumplings. Better?

News / Overcoming (or fostering) political hate speech in Poland? [15]

Some say PiS and PO feed on mutual hatred.

Of course they do, it's what keeps them going. People get to root for their team instead of actually thinking or holding individuals accountable for their actions. We have the same problem in the US (not nearly as personal as here), but it still has broken down into the same as cheering a sports team. Sad really. The issues get overlooked, and we all lose in the end.

BTW, that mad gunmans first target was Leszek Miller. He has some bigger issues than the PiS-PO rhetoric.

PS, JKM thinks you're all a bunch of hippie socialists :)

exactly! kapisz?!

Fine, I'll just call them brisket dumplings.

No Polish influence at all, straight out of my noggen.

But really, how about a list of those 40 types of pierogi?

kapujesz?!

Ah, too late :( I'll come up with a witty response later :)

The thing is that a certain dish that has been made for centuries is that certain dish.

Meh, denialism.

PS, I can order some brisket pierogi for you in secret if you're afraid of word getting around..

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

I am not suggesting that every Pole was a communist. What the historical record is saying is that there was enough support in Poland for a communist government that the republicans could not sustain a defense of Poland. Poland was a divided nation after the war part republican part communist.

That would be my great unified Polish field theory of 1946. It doesn't take much to tip over the boat of democracy in rough waters (or something to that effect...).

Anyway, still wondering what is meant by cold shoulder.

Travel / Gourmet food shops in Gliwice? [6]

Apparently there is an Alma in Gliwice. They've got just about everything I need. Find a decent local butcher for steaks, and there should be wine shops in one of the shopping centers around there.

USA, Canada / Giving up canadian citizenship for a Polish one? Cant be true! [20]

because my citizenship was questionable.

It's a better idea to have the passport in your hand before you move. Sorry it's not working for you, it's treating me pretty well.

LeAnne

With that in mind, the Polish consulate in Canada can square you away regarding citizenship.

Real Estate / Poland Housing prices in July 2010 [129]

The interest/response to my last project over the past few months has been incredible and I feel very confident for the future.

Based on what you said, your last project seems to be fairly common sense. I figure affordable housing will be a win here for years to come.

You mentioned that bureaucracy and red tape adds quite a bit to the cost of building, is it easier to build outside of the cities, or do deal with the same people/paperwork?

Travel / Crossing to Russia: Planning a Motorcycle Trip from Poland to Kalinigrad [26]

Thanks for all the help, most of this information is new to me including terms such as IDP?

IDP is an international drivers permit, basically an official translation of your drivers license in a number of different languages. You can get one from your local motoringclub. ADAC offices in Germany, I think they do them at Post Offices in the UK, AAA offices in the US.

Real Estate / Poland Housing prices in July 2010 [129]

I have watched the property market pick up in the second half of this year and I feel confident that this increase, although slow, will continue.

Do you think that real estate is still undervalued in Poland? Or that a 50% increase isn't speculative?

You mentioned why it's so expensive to build, on the economic side of things, wages have gone up 50% over the last 10 years and is slowing down year by year to about the rate of inflation. Shouldn't housing prices follow suit? Quite a few new builds are still empty (at least here in Wroclaw).

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

Any horse that was saddled was because they had a Soviet gun to their head. Don't tell me you didn't know that?

Just some interesting bits:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_people%27s_referendum,_1946

Based on the real outcome, the actual support for Communism under pressure was about the same as the support for Nazism under pressure (40ish percent). That's pretty interesting actually.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_federal_election,_March_1933

To further assure the outcome of the vote would be a Nazi majority, Nazi organizations "monitored" the vote process. In Prussia, 50,000 members of SS, SA and Stahlhelm were ordered to monitor the votes as deputy sheriffs.

Reads a lot like:

ipn.gov.pl/portal.php?serwis=pl&dzial=203&id=4427&poz=2&update=1

Communism in Poland was Polish communism.

Maybe they thought it would be at the referendum, but it most certainly turned into Soviet Communism really quick. My question is why didn't Stalin incorporate Poland into the Soviet Union as he did other states? If the allies sold Poland out, it shouldn't have been too much of an issue. Question for another thread I suppose.

Anyway, doesn't have much to do with getting the cold shoulder now. I think Poland is respected for it's position as a regional player in the EU. Don't understand the need for larger ambitions at the moment considering the realities. Maybe it's just a bit of hurt pride?

USA, Canada / Giving up canadian citizenship for a Polish one? Cant be true! [20]

Do you think ANYBODY in PL cares about you coming there or not?

Other than her family, probably not.

Does anyone in Poland care about you? I do grubas, and if you do decide to come back, I can give you a welcoming hug.

LeAnne

You can do a search on "Polish citizenship", there are quite a few threads covering the details.

Travel / Crossing to Russia: Planning a Motorcycle Trip from Poland to Kalinigrad [26]

Tourist invitation costs $30, and like I said, the consulates take reprints of the invitation letter.

So, basically, you pay your $30. In 24 hours, you get a pdf copy of the invitation to print, you print it off and got the consulate with your visa application form, and viola, another 24 hours and $80 later you have a visa to go to Russia :) .

Your grandfather was Polish, which means that one of your parents were Polish, which means that you are Polish, by birth...As long as no one formally renounced their Polish citizenship.

You're not seeking out a new citizenship, you were Polish when you were born. Go get your passport. Canada recognizes dual citizenship.

cic.gc.ca/english/resources/publications/dual-citizenship.asp

If you, your parents, your grandparents and your spouse, if you are married, were all born in Canada, and you have not become the citizen of any other country, then you most likely possess only one citizenship: Canadian.

However, if one or more of these people were born outside Canada or acquired another citizenship, this might result in your having dual citizenship, depending on the laws of the countries concerned.
