History / Polish flag over the Reichstag first? [399]

You started the war for them in '39,

You forget it was Germany who didn't want to negotiate and was impatient. If Hitler would have cooled down and waited ten or twenty years everything would have worked out for Germany eventually, anyway.

Don't tell me the Europeans had lacked the morale to fight against the soviet troops on their lands!

No, but they were probably very tired of war by 1945.

If you think for a minute, it very strongly implies that a post-war Polish grave robber did not take the case! Not unless they had an attack of conscience and reburied the thing.

You cannot explain exactly how the case got there so you cannot say for sure a Pole ever had it.

Who is "we"...nobody asked you to fight. Your material support would had been enough.

America was already there, involved in all of it. We would have been asked to fight on behalf of Britain.

They put NKVD troops with machine guns behind them....

That's why we didn't want to fight. Why fight a war unless you are absolutely sure you can win?

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

The destiny of being an eternal heritage park, a museum to which
"rich" American Poles could come, flash some dollars, and enjoy the good old Poland
for 2 weeks or so, on their holiday.

That might have not been their destiny. It seems clear Poles wanted Poland to be an independent democracy.
And people do benefit from tourism. Having visitors with money to spend can be a good thing.

Hadn't stopped starting the world war by the western allies in the first place?

The only reason the A bombs were dropped on Japan was to stop the war because American morale was very low. You cannot win a war with low morale.

Patton wasn't, the Germans weren't, the Poles weren't, the Baltics weren't, the Hungarians weren't, no country getting shoved behind the iron curtain actually wasn't.

No one was happy with the iron curtain, bb, but look at what it would have taken to stop it...a lot more war...fighting, death, destruction.

The red army was exhausted as everybody else...there wasn't much more to add.

BB, people were sick of fighting. Maybe Patton and a handful of Germans were not but everyone else was. That's just the reality of the situation.

So perhaps you can explain how the silver cigarette case of one Max Monk from Vienna was found in the 1998 excavations at Belzec?

That is circumstantial and doesn't mean a Pole took the case.

USA, Canada / What should I bring back from the U.S. to Poland? [46]

Yup. They're really good if you like salty stuff. Same goes for Reese's. You can also bring Lindt Truffles or Ferrera Roche hazlenut chocolates. Maybe some Almond Rocca?

In my opinion, it might be due to the fact that in every historical books there's only about 10% of facts and the rest is pure speculation and private views on the matter.

I totally agree with you there.

There's a new Butterfinger that is lighter with crispy wafers inside. It doesn't get stuck in the molars as much as the original. Try to take some of those. You can find them at some Wal Mart super centers though not all :)

they used em all up on Japan...i don,t think there was any spare ones available at the time...

I didn't know there were only two. So, what was the effect on Stalin, seeing atomic bombs detonate in Japan? Did he wonder if USSR would be next?

Who knows what the outcome would have been. What if the Red Army retreated only to reemerge ten times stronger a little later?

He might have been seen as dangerous because he was NOT the lone nutter.

At the time Roosevelt thought Stalin would cooperate so he wasn't going to jeopardize what he hoped would be the groundwork for world peace.

Stalin promised free elections in Poland at the Yalta Conference but later fell short of this. Americans accused Roosevelt of selling out to the Russians.

At the time of the conference the Red Army was three times larger than that of allied forces.

Face it, the Red Army was enormous and unlike what anyone else had. It influenced the US to get its act together and work on it's own military.

Right you are. It was unavoidable at the time. Roosevelt was convinced Stalin wouldn't annex land while Churchill had a lower opinion of him. Roosevelt believed Stalin would cooperate later if given what he asked for at Yalta.
