Genealogy / DNA Testing in Poland. Is it popular? [81]

they are not related to any other Africans or Native Americans today?

I will put it another way, we are all related to Africans.

Genes like this are very general ideas, first you get a mutation and then that mutation spreads to the next generation, so you can find the family but as the millennium continue the people spread geographically.

That's why I think it's voodoo science (for now) to charge people money for such a general indicator.

Possible place of (R1a) origin : Asia, most probably South Asia. Other possibilities include Central Asia, Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

You can't really get more general than that.

by the way, I have to go now....more later.

No problem, take care.
I should be off too.

But fathers and sons, brothers, and cousins still carry those genes today and produce matches.

Of course, if they are related through blood then yes.

Not all matches are that far back.

Which ones are not that far back?
We were talking about R1a but if you can show me a more modern mutation that'd be interesting.

It's like saying that my dad and brother are related 18,000 years ago because they have the same DNA.

I think we have some miscommunication here.
The heritage sites that want your money so they tell you something about genes and probability or even possibility from a R1a shared gene is nothing to do with closely related people in the way I think you are now talking about?

E.g.(if you were male) you share the R1a gene with many Polish, Indians and your father. What does this tell you? not much really.

But you obviously have some relatives over there.

With an 18000 year old gene, it is safe to say you have relatives everywhere in Europe at least.

But yeah, I agree with SeanBM it's a little bit stupid to try track your roots after your genes.

Now that I started reading about it I find it interesting, this mutation R1a is estimated to be 18,000 years old.
There was no Poland back then, it was end of the last iceage, I am fascinated with this era in time and with such definitive evidence as DNA, it makes for an interesting story.

I don't know much about genes, only you suggested I check it out, so I did.

But despite that, it seems that the sites that can tell for money that you're "Polish" from your genes are just a scam. I would call it voodoo science. But maybe like fortune-telling it offers something else? a reassurance or something? I don't know I am just shooting in the dark.

In the future I would say it will be much more precise but for now it is far too general to give anything really accurate like a country, it appears.

The surnames of your grandparents would probably tell you a lot more about your histories than a very common gene.

I would say some genes are more common than others, so one could argue it's a gene with Polish tendency.

I will let Indians know that they have a tendency of actually being Polish right away, will I? :)

I can prove that I'm half Polish,

Go on then, prove it using DNA tests.
Or I will continue to believe you live in a fantasy world ;)

Genealogy / DNA Testing in Poland. Is it popular? [81]

Could you explain that to me because I don't quite get it?

Sure, that Americans seem to travel through different countries and time in thier heads, believing that they were Polish or Irish etc... because of a website that they pay to tell them they have the Polish or Irish gene etc...

And there is no gene to prove it, so it is pure fantasy, therefore an escape and therefore a holiday, in a sense.

Of course not but deep down in my soul I know that we have one special gene that makes us so perfect and better than other nations ;D

I didn't know you were Irish too :D

I doubt that any of my friends would spend such money on tests. They would probably prefer to go on holiday.

It's an interesting point though, don't you think, Americans spend that money on their own fantasy.
There is no "Polish" gene.
Some go on holidays in their heads.

News / Will many Poles migrate to Germany in May 2011 (after opening labor market)? [157]

It will be interesting to see, it will probably improve relations between Germany and Poland.
I think that most of the people who wanted to leave have left, with ryanair cheap flights there is not such a great difference between Germany and Ireland.

I think Torq and BB had a point that higher skilled workers might leave or even commute for better pay in Germany.
It's a trade off, Germany gets workers and Poland gets experience.
With this it feels like the iron curtain is well and truly down, the separation or distinction between the political "East" and "West" will become more diffused and in my humble opinion this is good for all concerned.

As for the E.U. and Euro, they will stay, it was always a long term investment and I can already see the benifits. And with a world crises there will always be those who only see doom and gloom but that makes no real difference. Not like the 65 Billion Euros Poland is getting between now and 2013, which I see in my daily life from infrastructure to E.U. funds going towards businesses here.

Someone gave an example of an old woman who invested in a restaurant and didn't do well, we can not go by this 'hear/say' individual cases. I know three people/companies that have got (or are getting) millions pf Zloty to start up, or expand their businesses. What does that tell you? Nothing because it is a personal experience.

*edit
I think the restaurant was from a different thread now that I read it again, aw well...

Life / Polish plantlife and similar flora where you live. [81]

it is also a means preventing the sap movements in the tree too soon in the spring because of the sun operation

Do you mean that the white colour reflects the sunlight or some chemical in the white substance painted on the tree slows down the sap?

Love / Polish relationships (race and religion) [140]

I somehow felt that I wanted to involve my parents and her parents too in this.

Again congratulations!

What do you think of S.Korea?

People usually only talk about the South, so I just assume when people say Korea, out loud, that they mean South Korea, they whisper North :)

News / Independence Blood Bath on Polish roads over the long weekend. [69]

I meet some feckin mad drivers on a daily basis.

In Ireland there used to be quite a lot of DrinkDriving but due to clever and graphic awareness campaigns and heavy penalties (jail time) that trend has been curved to a huge extent, now the younger generation mostly wouldn't dream of driving under the influence.

I have a question, the speed cameras are never turned on, don't they pay for themselves, plus some?
And I don't get why they have to tell people there is a speed camera up ahead that kinda defeats the purpose.
But I think one of the biggest problems are mobilephones, people are distracted while hurtling a ton of metal down the road at 120 Km ph.

I think they should make hands-free units mandatory in car manufacturing plants and free with every new mobile.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

Maybe it's a question for the behavioural psychologists

I think Polish humour is very similar to Irish because of influences that shaped out mentality 1.drink, 2.Catholicism and a 3.bad history.
