UK, Ireland / Work/Trade Unions in UK - thinking about joining one [9]

I agree that Unions have a lot less power today.

We also have so many laws in place to protect people "sexual harassment" "bullying" so you have rights even without having to have a Union Rep.

The union rep if any good will be able to explain these regulations clearly and give advice when the regulations have been broken by employee or employer.

everything is in black and white in the rule books so if the line is crossed they can remove a person - no problem

This is another area where a good rep can help, If you get a written warning for one "offence" a second for an other doesnt equal dismissal. They have to be for the same "offence" also such warnings are time limited.

I think:) but a rep can explain the system or call on more experienced colleagues. Its not much but it is something.

Ask the others where you work which union they are in and if there is an active shop steward. If there is, talk to them then make your decision, if not join the largest. I dont know a big lot about English unions but its always good to be in one.

UK, Ireland / Brits to protest against foreigners in the workforce, including Poles. [289]

i noted you were the one that didn't take note of the words i used so you your question for me to form an argument is unnecessary because of your lack of attention.

I paid perhaps too much attention to your words and I dont wish to repeat myself however……

You mentioned Evolution and attempted to use it as a reason to oppose migration then softened your stance suggesting that migration could be on an ad hoc basis ie “phone the agency”. This to me demonstrated your misunderstanding of both Evolution and economic policy. Migration (internal and external) doesn’t work that way, people will not permanently move for temporary jobs unless they are young, stupid or have a particular skill they can sell overseas. Then there are the people of independent means. If you wish to discuss evolution start another thread.

More British people move overseas than Eastern Europeans arrive the rest come from the commonwealth. The British birth rate is under 2.1 children per woman. Without migration the population of your country is falling, how do you generate enough to support the ageing population and everything else? You suggested some solutions and as I said, they (if effective) have a massive time lag plus need massive investment before they begin to bare fruit, in the meantime what do you propose should happen?

A small question…..Do you oppose migration in both directions?

The Ex Communists in the English labour party (as you said) are driving the business model of economic growth where the maximisation of profit means the reduction of labour costs and this somehow is supposed to benefit society, It was George H Bush who described this as Voodoo economics and I agree with him. Are you suggesting state planning, protectionism or something else?

Its impossible to know what you think except you don’t like immigration and being called a Racist. I already said that opposing migration is not racist, I didnt like having to migrate and would take exception to someone calling me a Racist but I believe that I could defend my stance without whining.

The problems around migration need to be addressed beyond send them all home. The salami slicing of migrants into good migrants and bad migrants is racist and patronising in the extreme.

People concerned about their lives are obviously not concerned about migration or they would have been protesting in good times as well as bad. Its not enough to say they are impotent quite apart from that being patronising it’s the slippery slope to bonkers theories revolving around the New World Order and other such crap.

The economic muck that this right wing developed world, spoiled child syndrome, has delivered has done more harm than good. Then the business community, who broke the post war consensus, demanded to be subsidised and were, showing themselves to be what they truly are, snake oil salesmen.

So wheres your argument gone now then??

You will get an opinion when you post something that demonstrates a reasoned thought process. I said earlier that you regurgitated hackneyed arguments, so far you have not managed to provide an interesting opinion to change my point of view.

Your single unoriginal point about racism being used too freely suggests that you are either too sensitive or you cant counter such allegations.

Yes i choose to be savage like australia, canada and new zealand. But as your such a generous person why not spare some money so i can bring up an extra 2 kids, what do you mean no. I dont care if i haven't put enough into the system and you and your family will suffer for it through higher taxes you have to do it. Not so attractive is it now??

This forum is in English

branded a racist
Yes i choose to be savage
racist isn't it.

You really are delicate......seriously......you are that sensitive?

Thats an interesting theory, taxes directly target humans, are they inhumane aswell?

Thick as Champ.....

humans have evolved to reject other cultures and races

while people in general haven't evolved to hate other races

Consistency is a good place to start.

Form an argument, please form an argument.........

Maybe you would like to take the time to prove me wrong instead?,

Your understanding of societal evolution is non existent, people didnt evolve to reject other cultures, people evolved, full stop. Dont try to bluff!

The impotent native people that you so patronise are more vexed by football than migration the violence that you salivate about has not materialised save a few incidents throughout Europe. As I said there has been more violence around Football matches in Europe.

Racism is inhuman because it directly targets humans.

Stupid airy fairy assertions that racism is thrown about insults what you believe to be your intelligence, if you cant defend your position without whining you must be very fragile.

Reducing the workforce, that you have said is needed, to a temp pool is not a well thoughout policy. You really should work that muscle. "They did it first so its ok for us" is a crap argument.

Your trotting out of tired, lazy, cod arguments is a disservice to yourself, you need to understand the themes that you choose, you dont know enough about stuff to draw upon it to comment beyond the headlines of a few papers and what your mate told you.

Well i was expecting the kids would join the conversation at some point.

I would say hes being quite generous

Freely supporting savage logic sets you apart from who exactly?

I said earlier that you like posting charactures of opinion and you have confirmed that.

natives, having lived longer in the country than immigrants, probably have paid more to the taxman than immigrants.

That is really silly logic by your reckoning a sliding scale of support should be introduced dependant upon contributions, good bye Health Service for a start.

"Nature Red in Tooth and Claw"
Are you really that savage?

I don't think the issue is with productivity.

Equating productivity with wealth creation was a bit clumsy.

I said earlier that modes of production had changed a British MP, Dennis Skinner, put it in a nutshell when he said that monetarist policy would lead to us all selling hamburgers and insurance to each other. That was the path that was taken and we still have the demographic problem. Raising the retirement age wont solve it nor will job creation without some migration.

I'm not a big proponent of multiculturalism I'm not against it either. Multiculturalism is a way to deal with the inevitable migration its far from perfect but the alternative is protectionism and we have gone too far down the path of diversification to reverse it.

I cant see how we can increase the wealth creation ability of the individual especially, as you have said, the never ending drive to cut costs leads to jobs going elsewhere.

And then there is this stimulation.

Privatise profit Nationalise debt not a good way to run an economy

investment in education? stimulation for emerging industries that produce stuff that the world wants?

These look like good ideas but with a time lag.

I'm still waiting for jarnowa to suggest an alternative as he in particular is concerned by migration.

UK, Ireland / Brits to protest against foreigners in the workforce, including Poles. [289]

i think you mean the most destructive way.

I meant what I said.

it's a public secret that migration from 3rd world costs Western countries much more than the returns.

Lets say you are correct, how do you propose to increase productivity without migration?

that's one of the many lies of multiculturalism.

The mass hysteria over witch trials or the reds under the beds hearings come to mind every time I see multiculturism used as an insult

UK, Ireland / Brits to protest against foreigners in the workforce, including Poles. [289]

they want to shut the doors and stop immigration

Stopping immigration is not racist, throwing non whites out is.

So do you suggest we over-populate our Islands and encounter the same problems as these 3rd world immigrants left?

I didnt suggest that at all I said that with a fertility rate below 2.1 in the developed world population falls. To maintain living standards, paid for by the economically productive, migration is essential. The only other way is to increase the economic productivity of the individual. The migration model is the easiest way to do this.

The whole aging population debate is a lie

No, it's based on sound economic reality.

I really dont understand this. Fascist Spain had a lot of foreigners?
Europe in general has had a lot of immigrants the "violence" has not materialised despite what a lot of drama queens say. Racism is inhuman because it's against humans, trying to combat something inhuman within the parameters of the law is a good thing.

There is a lot of aul shite being talked here, the multiple postings of the terrible and inhuman murder in turkey/Kurdistan being used as a stick to beat Muslims while ignoring the terrible and inhuman treatment of that Austrian man's (and others) daughter. Western/christian traditions? I think not. I'll come back to this.

One person made a good point about the Honour Killing, Torq said that the most shocking thing was the Polices' indifference to the child's fate and I agree. Making a sweeping statement about the Religious culture that engendered that indifference I would simply point to the present difficulties in Christian or more specifically Catholic Mexico. Christian Mexican police are exemplars of indifference look at the murder and detection rates. The reluctance to investigate murders of children in for example Ciudad Juarez doesnt lead me to a similar conclusion.

Christian societies dont have the stain of honour killings no matter how poor or deprived they are, nothing (outside of that society) can excuse such behaviour, this is not a case for relativism it's simply a case of right and wrong. Projecting that conclusion upon all Muslims is shallow beyond outrage.

The rates of such comparable incidents may be used in an attempt to grab the mantel of superiority but it would make a very tawdry mantel for the self proclaimed victor.

The idea that the left are somehow immune to racism or the impact of migration is to nicely pigeon hole the problem. Demographics of the developed world dictate the rate of migration in an ageing population, dropping below a fertility rate of 2.1 leads to a declining population this coupled with improved longevity is a direct threat to the prosperity of any country. Having said that a populous nation doesnt equal prosperity, modes of production have changed this is why Ireland is richer than Bangladesh. Managed migration is vital to sustain the west's wealth and this policy is driven by the right.

The BNP are a racist organisation Ukip are not. Racism is inhuman draw your own conclusions. Those people who are protesting are not racist, stupid or lazy.

I'm struggling to feel sorry for such people to be honest

You will understand as you get older and god forbid develop dementia with no one there to look after you then you will be screaming for state subsidies.

I can't wait to move to Spain, where the weather, women and lifestyle are so much more agreeable.

You are going to get a shock when you meet your first Spanish "Tio".

No wonder they're protesting, most of them are clearly thick as ****, vote BNP, complain about "bloody foreigners" and then demand that their (equally thick as ****) wife cooks them "chikkin tikka masala innit" for dinner.

WTF wise up.
Would you talk about anyone else like that, those people are concerned about their jobs, mortgages, feeding their children, etc.

USA, Canada / What do the Poles hate and love about the U.S.? [170]

Although it is a democracy there are many issues that you cannot protest without being arrested.

Can you name them? I cant think of any except for instigating a company boycott of Israel or trade with Cuba and the former is rarely enforced.

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

I do think that being freak**ing precise in what and who and when IS important.

It is good to be precise; In English it is the second republic.

If you lost your name get over it, you can change it back or did your ancestors not think it important enough?

the first thing - learn to quote - got lost for a minute

You got lost? I'm sure you will find your Ivory tower soon.

the second - WTF is 'second republic'?!?!

It’s what interwar Poland is known as in English

Ah, you mean II Rzeczpospolita?

There is a time and place for pedantry

bloody ignorants as usual...
and then you are looking for your predecessors not having a blinking idea where to start cos you are ..ignorant! giving your own names to whatever

I'm glad you got that off your chest but I dont know what it means or am I being a bit pedantic here with you lack of quotes?

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

That's why so many polish Volksdeutsche prefered the invading Germans..

If I had been one I would have felt the same.

The creation of nationstates were mostly hell for the many different ethnics in Europe...most of our conflicts and grudges stem from the experiences made then...

Again I agree with you drawing artificial lines is not good and has led to countless tragedies throughout the world.

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

I think it was ok for that time and even today immigrant/minority children are forced to learn the primary language.

I largely agree but the point about the allegiances of The Germanic minority in The Second Republic brings up issues of how they were treated, enforcing the Polish language on German speakers cant then be used as a legimate grievance using the logic of the quote.

enforcing german as school language, first language in the multi- ethnic state Prussia was.

That sounds good if you spoke German

Not that much different as the Poles tried with the Ukrainians

He did it so its ok?

Well, that's what Harry meant and that's what I was also trying to point out.

Sorry, I'll have to pay closer attention.

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

So only ethnic Poles "count" and not Polish citizens in general? Isn't that a bit too simple?

It seems simple but its not. Having an ethnic minority as citizens is legally correct but often those people ended up outside their state against their wishes, the vast majority will accept the new way but their hearts will be elsewhere. The majority state will refer to those minorities ironically as "the other" where all good deeds are in this case Polish and all bad deeds German, Ukrainian etc.

Where Germans treated badly in the second republic I dont know?
Did Germans treat Polish people harshly? Trying to extinguish a language is fairly harsh.

News / The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign theft from Oswiecim, Poland [240]

I'm not sure exactly how credible the Sunday Mirror is, however the article is marked as exclusive

This is old news, the story first appeared in a Danish paper and was picked up by others during the week.
